These Words Must Be on Your Heart (2014) feat. Riley Rossi Jul 19, 2020

Show notes

This Jehovah's Witness cinematic masterpiece is about a family falling apart as each member strays farther from the Truth. Most notably, teen son Marcus becomes a famous hiphop producer, and starts hanging around people who smoke extremely shitty weed. This well-paced and well-acted film contains all the trademarks of JW filmmaking, including a sharp critique of energy-draining work culture. Jehovah said fuck work! Our guide through this movie is Riley Rossi, a talented and accomplished music producer (neotenomie, rook&nomie), who grew up in the faith and is very knowledgeable about JW teachings and values.

We've all been there - wearing a prom dress, standing on the roof of your school, ready to jump. What circumstances led our protagonist Jenny Martin to this dire predicament? Short film On The Edge, by our favorite production company Cross Wind, investigates the seriousness of bullying and how kids are inherently evil until broken by Christ. In the process, they invent the concept of memes.

In this experimental bonus episode, Ash presents a solo report on a sincerely beautiful and genius movie about the life of Christ: Pier Paolo Pasolini's 1964 epic The Gospel According to St. Matthew. With all the weird Christian media out there, on the spectrum from relatively wholesome and bizarre to straight up cruel and tasteless, is there any possibility for Christian film that is actually well done and artistically beautiful? Yes! This biographical epic about Jesus still feels fresh and powerful despite being made almost 60 years ago. Remarkably, Pasolini is infamously the director of Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975), which to this day is considered one of the most controversial and depraved movies ever made, despite its genius. How is it possible for one director to make a movie so physically disgusting, and then earlier in his career make a film about Jesus which is so widely regarded that even the Vatican considers it the best film about Christ ever made? Ash explores these questions, as well as engages in some sincere Bible study and discussion of faith. However, even though this movie is actually good, he still finds stuff to laugh at along the way.

Bells of Innocence (2003) feat. Lehr a.k.a. WrongMan of Everything Is Terrible! Jun 28, 2020

Show notes

This extremely fun and watchable Christian supernatural thriller features an all-star cast including Chuck Norris, his son Mike Norris, and legendary Christian film actor David A.R. White. During the episode we refer to this film as "like Eyes Wide Shut for kids" and "like Midsommar for dudes". Three wisecracking Christians get stranded in a spooky town when their private plane full of Bibles has to make a crash landing. No one in town wants to help them out, but when our heroes start asking too many questions, they uncover a demonic secret too twisted for even their own imaginations. Our dear friend Lehr, an action movie expert and longtime member of Everything Is Terrible! joins us for the experience.

This classic Christian variety show hosted by the legendary Blaine Bartel was filmed in Tulsa, Oklahoma from 1986-1993. Released on home video with subscription services available to churches and youth groups, the program featured skits, musical guests, and a recurring sitcom feature called Family First. We watched an episode from Sept. 1989 "Jesus, Tougher Than Nails" which Scott had previously edited in a video for Everything Is Terrible. In the episode we learn that Jesus was very tough and DEFINITELY NOT GAY.

I Still Believe (2020) feat. Duncan Cooper Jun 14, 2020

Show notes

Riverdale heartthrob KJ Apa stars in this brand new 2020 Christian film that is all aesthetics but soft on message. Unfortunately, his shirt stays on the whole time. Writer and musician Duncan Cooper, author of Heaven 24/7 (a daily newsletter about the lives of historical saints), joins us to discuss how I Still Believe illustrates the neoliberalisation of Christianity. We also talk Hillsong church, Chuck Smith, and the Cavalry Chapel movement. We even find a way to work in an extended discussion of the 2015 EDM film We Are Your Friends.

Heaven Is for Real (2014) feat. David Allen of Loose Meat Jun 07, 2020

Show notes

BASED ON A TRUE STORY ~ Colton Burpo was just a normal 4-year-old until his appendix ruptured. While in the hospital, he had a near death experience and visited actual Heaven, but came back to Earth to tell us about it. His story captivated the world, leading to a best-selling book that would eventually be adapted into this film in 2014. Our friend David of comedy team Loose Meat is an expert on this film because he once completely re-edited it in a way that turned the inspirational tearjerker into an ominous piece of claustrophobic family horror. Today June 7 2020 at 5PM PST we will be livestreaming this re-edit for all Boys' Bible Study patreon subscribers.

Check out Loose Meat's vast collection of video and podcast work at http://loosemeat.biz/
