The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry (2008) feat. Trans Regret Snoopy Nov 08, 2020

Show notes

In this absolute banger of a film by the prolific Christiano brothers, an elderly man makes it his life's mission to teach the lessons of the Bible to as many young boys as possible. Jonathan Sperry imparts on our boy protagonists the important concepts of loving thy neighbor, turning the other cheek, and being so kind to others that it basically becomes an act of emotional terrorism. Internet personality and biblical scholar Trans Regret Snoopy helps us decide if hell is real or not and tells us about her new podcast Trans Regret Snoopy Presents the Bible

Beckman (2020) Nov 01, 2020

Show notes

This year's most anticipated Christian action film by Pure Flix stars the absolute legend David A.R. White in the titular role as a former assassin turned preacher. When his adopted daughter is kidnapped by a snakelike cult leader (Billy Baldwin) he makes a desperate call to the mysterious Network in order to get back in the killer-for-hire game and save his daughter's life. The film could easily be called the Christian version John Wick - it's hard not to compare, since both films feature a shadowy network of assassins who play by a secret code of conduct.

HALLOWEEN BONUS - Hereditary (2018) feat. Mary Oct 30, 2020

Show notes

Contains spoilers. We discuss occult and esoteric topics as they relate to this contemporary cult classic art horror film, including the Goetia, Aleister Crowley, and Spiritualism. We have both high praise and sharp criticism for the film, which captivated audiences with its amazing acting performances and profuse use of occult symbols, but ultimately feels godless and unable to capture the full awe and dread of the spiritual quest. Enigmatic pop singer Mary, who sings the Boys' Bible Study outro theme, was invaluable in the way she applied Jungian psychological theory to her critique.

The directorial debut of Brian Lohr is a moody and compelling short film about a Christian who is given the opportunity to use a phone that can call anyone exactly two days in the past. The protagonist uses it to try to prevent his wife's fatal car accident, but when he can't, he uses it to warn everyone who is about to die to accept Jesus Christ as their savior before it's too late. The Boys reflect on this chilling allegory about the importance of missioning and draw all the wrong conclusions from it.

Paranormal (2009) feat. Joey Gallimore Oct 25, 2020

Show notes

From the director of Pray and Pray 2.5 comes another Christian horror film with a night vision twist. PARANORMAL weaves storylines of ghost hunters investigating a haunted asylum in the style of Blair Witch, while a skeptical novelist has a terrifying experience with a ouija board that leads him to seek help from a pastor who is knowledgeable in the supernatural. Our guest Joey Gallimore of horror blog Camera Viscera joins us for an in-depth review and a read-through of the official bible study guide that accompanies the film.

Hangman's Curse (2003) Oct 18, 2020

Show notes

As we spotlight Christian horror films throughout October, we exhume this macabre teen movie about a family of secret agents called in to go undercover at a high school. A supernatural affliction causes the jock bullies of the school to suffer seizures while hallucinating the ghost of Abel Frye, a former student who hanged himself on school grounds. Notably, the film is adapted from a screenplay by popular Christian fantasy author Frank E. Peretti, and stars Leighton Meester of 'Gossip Girl' fame.

Jack Chick is one of the most notable names in Christian missioning through art. His popular and notorious "Chick Tracts" are moral lessons in comic form meant to be given as gifts or left in public for people to find and get saved. But it took an outside force, independent animator Steve West aka Littleshots Productions, to take Chick's message off the page and into thrilling 3D. The results are very bewildering and uncanny pieces of video.

Sting: Moment of Truth (2004) feat. Dom Moschitti and Sean Muscles Oct 04, 2020

Show notes

This biopic of legendary professional wrestler Sting, real name Steve Borden, tells the story of his career from the very beginning up until his fateful come-to-Jesus moment that transformed him into a born-again Christian. Sting has since acted in several Christian movies, including a Boys' Bible Study personal favorite The Encounter (2010) that was a subject of one of our earlier episodes, and we as a podcast regard as one of the best Christian films ever made. Two of our dear friends who are wrestling experts join us for this discussion: Dom Moschitti, the creator behind Paperback Paradise and Blank Tapes Pod, and Sean Muscles, illustrator and comics artist who drew the Boys' Bible Study official show art. We cover Sting's life story as well as several instances of Christianity as an artistic motif in the mythology of professional wrestling.

20 Minutes to Go! (1990) feat. Woodrow White Sep 27, 2020

Show notes

This narrative collection of music videos is literally a cult classic - having originated from the Children of God cult, now known as The Family International. In an hour of genuinely catchy and beautiful pop music enhanced by psychedelic editing, the cult delivers its special blend of hypersexual doomsday Christianity in an iconic way that feels fresh 30 years later. Our friend Woodrow White introduced us to this remarkable tape and guides us through its candy coated vision of the apocalypse.

Can the concept of time travel even exist in Christianity? It allows mortals to control destiny and basically act like God. Seems inherently heretical, but that doesn't stop Christian creators from churning these things out. This is the third time travel film we've watched for our show, the other two being Assassin 33 A.D. and Time Changer. A Path in Time is also probably one of the best overall films we've seen so far. While not as shocking as the most infamous Christian films, its use of classic tropes (an atheist crying in the rain) combined with bizarre twists (a secret city under Antarctica) makes this film an exemplar of the genre.
