Touched by an Angel S8E5 "Chutzpah" (2001) feat. Alec Robbins Sep 20, 2020

Show notes

The long-running CBS drama Touched by an Angel spanned nine seasons in almost a decade. We tuned in to its later period and found this ideologically confusing gem of an episode in which a young Jewish cartoonist lashes out at her father by drawing anti-Semitic caricatures of him in the local paper. Her comic gets hugely popular, and everything seems fine until the wrong crowd misses the irony and adopts her comic strip as a banner of hate. Fortunately, the angelic pantheon that is Tess, Monica, and Gloria are there to diffuse the situation and heal the relationship between father and daughter. Joining us in the synagogue is our dear friend Alec Robbins, the creator of popular webcomic "Mr. Boop", who helps us examine the great power held by the medium of comics.

The ButterCream Gang (1992) Sep 06, 2020

Show notes

Our most requested film to review is this sentimental drama about a "gang" of adolescent do-gooders who become estranged from their friend who spends some time away from the idyllic suburbs in the big bad city. The ButterCream Gang work a paper route, play baseball, know every adult in town, and somehow do the work of an entire police force on an average day. Meanwhile, their former friend Pete just wants to commit petty theft and start small fires. A rift grows between these two points of view, but it's nothing that God, racial profiling, and a lot of passive aggression can't fix.

Ash and Julian love to laugh! Unfortunately, they did not get a chance to do that while exploring the wide world of Christian Improv Comedy. In this episode, Ash and Julian meditate on the very nature of comedy. They ask questions like, "Is clean comedy even possible?" and "How are a group of comedians so good at following the rules of God but so bad at following the rules of improv?"

Remember (2012) feat. Bret Berg of Museum of Home Video Aug 30, 2020

Show notes

The nuclear family is under attack! Children are stolen from their parents to be kept as prisoners of the state! Government-issued drugs are making people lose their free will! This could never happen to me and my beautiful society, right? Wrong! REMEMBER (2012) is an ambitious Christian end-times sci-fi thriller that shows us how socialist mind control could destroy the core values we take for granted. It's an intense message, but today's guest Bret Berg can handle it - he is an accomplished film programmer whose streaming show Museum of Home Video presents riveting compilations of bizarre, rare, and forgotten moments in broadcasting history. Together we discuss the evolution of contemporary Christian conspiracy theories, and our shared love of movies that were seemingly made for no one.

Overcomer (2019) feat. Nathan Faustyn of Loose Meat Aug 23, 2020

Show notes

The Kendrick brothers are some of the most accomplished Christian filmmakers, easily in league with other greats such as Kirk Cameron and Kevin Sorbo. We review the Kendricks' most recent film in which a Christian high school cuts all their sports teams except for cross country for some reason, even though only one girl is participating. This teen athlete, Hannah, is on a troubled life path until she gets saved by God thanks to support from her coaches, principal, and a mysterious blind man who turns out to be her long lost father. Our Christian jock friend Nathan Faustyn of comedy team Loose Meat joins us to watch this film, which in and of itself was a feat mental endurance comparable to running a 5k.

We finally bring the name of our podcast fully to life by hosting our first actual Bible study! In our most recent free episode, we watched basketball-themed Christian movie Breaking the Press (2010). The film's DVD contains a full study guide meant for an educational discussion with scriptural tie-ins. Scott and Julian take our good friend Nathan Faustyn, member of comedy team Loose Meat and cohost of their podcast Loose Lips, through this convoluted educational experience that at times feels more like a Christian basketball RPG than a Sunday school class. On the way, they discuss their favorite Christian NBA stars and learn about the H.E.L.P. Test™ for making godly decisions. The full study guide is scanned and attached to the Patreon blog post for this episode so you can download it and follow along!

Show notes

Two brothers, abandoned as babies and raised by the local basketball coach, become the stars of their team. But when brother Josh's ego gets too big for his small town, he goes his own way, and he and his brother Matt reenact the famous parable of the prodigal son. Eyad Zahra, director of the 2010 cult classic Muslim punk film The Taqwacores, is also a lifelong basketball fan. I'm in Love with a Church Girl (2013) feat. Backxwash Aug 02, 2020

Show notes

An all-star cast including Ja Rule, Adrienne Houghton (3LW), Vincent Pastore (The Sopranos), Toby Mac, and Stephen Baldwin grace this 2010s classic about a reformed gangster who is saved by the love of a cute church girl who works at a Christian bookstore. Ja Rule's honestly very good performance carries this film. Who better to talk to us about the intersection of mainstream rap and Christian pop culture than Backxwash? The Canadian rapper and producer's critically acclaimed 2020 album God Has Nothing To Do With This Leave Him Out Of It mixes lyrical themes of heaven, hell, and horror with epic, cinematic beats. She's a lifelong hiphop fan with a fascinating personal history of growing up in a doomsday church, so her perspective proved invaluable in helping the Boys navigate this film.

This is our most accurate capture yet of what a Boys' Bible Study hangout actually sounds like: Ash the esotericist, Scott the optimist, and Julian the pragmatist.
