Rachel Varga: Environmental Stressors, Toxins, and Extrinsic Aging May 03, 2023
    Show notes

Did you know that our bodies are constantly addressing oxidative stress and damage from free radicals? Environmental toxins through air, water, and lighting all impact skin health, and understanding how these toxins contribute to skin aging can allow us to make lifestyle choices to prevent extrinsic aging.

Welcome to another episode of the Biohacking Beauty podcast brought to you by Young Goose Skincare! In this episode, host Amitay Eshel, the CEO of Young Goose, is joined by Rachel Varga to discuss how environmental stressors and toxins impact the skin, and what we can do about it. We also cover why it’s important to purify the water you use, the skin conditions that can arise from toxin exposure, and where we are most often exposed to heavy metals.

Rachel Varga is a double board-certified aesthetic nurse with over 10 years of experience working in aesthetic medicine and providing non-surgical rejuvenation treatments. Rachel is the host of a top 20 podcast, the Rachel Varga podcast, and an international clinical trainer for other physicians and nurses. She is also an award-winning author in the fields of regenerative and aesthetic nursing, as well as an executive board member and peer reviewer for the Plastic and Aesthetic Nursing Journal. Rachel is one of the first to combine functional techniques, biohacking, and modern medical aesthetics by teaching patients how to tune into what the skin is telling them about their internal health.

    What we discuss:

00:04:47: Rachel’s paper on extrinsic aging

00:09:29: The body is constantly addressing oxidative stress and damage

00:13:32: We tend to get the most impact from heavy metals from the air

00:17:38: Exposure to toxins can result in skin conditions such as hyperpigmentation and acne

00:21:15: When you release your toxins, your brain also functions better

00:27:12: Purifying the water you use can reduce levels of heavy metals and toxins in the body

00:30:32: Electromagnetic mitigation for skin health and slowing aging is imperative

00:34:50: Constant use of electronic devices can result in poor blood flow

00:41:25: Companies start using lower quality ingredients in order to improve their margins

00:45:44: Rachel’s seasonal skin camp programs

    Key Takeaways:

    • The air is a huge contributing factor to heavy metal toxicity, which is why air purifiers are important to have in your home to reduce exposure to volatile organic compounds.
    • Double cleansing the skin can help get rid of dirt, debris, pollution, and makeup before actually cleansing the skin.
    • In addition to environmental toxins, emotional and spiritual toxins can also impact our skin health. This is why when we go through times of stress or trauma, the skin will often display that stress.

    Show notes

Did you know that by the age of 40-50, people have anywhere between 10 to 30% senescent cells in their tissues? Senescent cells are one of the hallmarks of aging, and can disrupt physiology throughout the body.

Welcome to another episode of the Biohacking Beauty podcast brought to you by Young Goose Skincare! In this episode, host Amitay Eshel, the CEO of Young Goose, is joined by Dr. Nick Bitz, an expert in ayurvedic medicine, to discuss senescent cells and how to eliminate them for improved health and appearance. We also cover why the industry is evolving away from anti-aging to a wellness movement, and how the focus is on enhancing health rather than fighting disease.

Dr. Nick Bitz is a naturopathic doctor who combines traditional and modern medicine in his practice. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science from the University of Guelph and a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree from Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. Dr. Bitz is passionate about helping his patients achieve optimal health and wellness using a holistic and individualized approach. [07:19] Why the industry is evolving away from anti-aging and towards a wellness movement.

[13:36] Why senescent cells are one of the hallmarks of aging.

[19:30] Senescent cells are dead cells that infect surrounding cells, leading to disruption in the body.

[25:39] Finding ways to eliminate senescent cells can improve body function and performance.

[31:37] Synolytic compounds are effective in disrupting pro survival proteins and allowing cells to naturally prune away through apoptosis

[37:43] Supporting autophagy through fasting or calorie restriction can help eliminate senescent cells.

[43:56] Senolytics can lower inflammation load and stimulate body repair.

[50:02] Pro C.A.R.E. Serum and C.A.R.E. Moisturizer contain senolytic compounds.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Longevity is replacing the term anti-aging, and it is important to focus on healthspan rather than just looking younger.
    • Senescent cells are one of the hallmarks of aging and can disrupt physiology throughout the body.
    • Our Pro C.A.R.E. Serum and C.A.R.E. Moisturizer contain senolytic compounds to help clear senescent cells over time.

Dr. Scott Sherr: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Skin Health and Longevity Apr 12, 2023
    Show notes

What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and how is it beneficial for us? Our guest today is a leading authority in hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and we’re discussing why this cutting edge treatment has been making waves in both the medical community and the longevity community.

Welcome to another episode of the Biohacking Beauty podcast brought to you by Young Goose Skincare! In this episode, host Amitay Eshel, the CEO of Young Goose, is joined by Dr. Scott Sherr. We dive into the world of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and how using HBOT can be beneficial for skin health and longevity. We also cover the specific protocols that you can implement to start optimizing your skin health and appearance.

Dr. Scott Sherr is a Board-Certified Internal Medicine Physician Certified to Practice Health Optimization Medicine (HOMe) and a specialist in Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). He is the founder of Integrative HBOT, a worldwide telemedicine practice where he consults and educates patients and clinics using his novel approach to hyperbaric therapy that includes cutting edge and dynamic HBOT protocols, comprehensive laboratory testing (using the HOMe framework), targeted supplementation, personal practices, synergistic technologies, and more.

Dr. Scott is also COO of Troscriptions, a line of precision dosed, pharmaceutical grade, and physician formulated buccal troches that address the many bottlenecks we all experience along the path to optimizing our health.

    What we discuss:

00:04:30: Dr. Scott Sherr’s background with hyperbaric oxygen therapy

00:07:11: What happens inside a hyperbaric chamber

    00:10:07: What is Henry's law?

    00:16:15: The hyperbaric protocol

00:21:17: Long term benefits of using hyperbaric oxygen therapy

00:30:41: Ways to leverage oxygen circulation after leaving the chamber

00:33:59: How hyperbaric therapy can be used for specific skin conditions

00:40:27: Hyperbaric therapy and skin rejuvenation

00:47:19: The different neurologic and systemic protocols

00:50:34: Is a hyperbaric chamber a long term optimization device?

    Key Takeaways:

    • Hyperbaric therapy can be used for specific inflammatory skin conditions because of its ability to decrease inflammation in the body. There are also studies that show that hyperbaric therapy can increase collagen production in the skin.
    • The first thing that happens in a hyperbaric chamber is the reversal of low oxygen states, so more oxygen is sent to the tissue. This is why hyperbaric therapy can help save the tissue on someone with an acute injury.
    • When you leave a hyperbaric chamber, you have a period of about 30 minutes where you have more oxygen circulation, and as a result you can leverage that oxygen in various ways.

The Effects of Blue Light and How To Avoid Them Mar 29, 2023
    Show notes

Did you know that the time you spend in front of a computer screen or in an office under artificial lights can dramatically age your skin? By understanding blue light and where it comes from, we can also understand how we can avoid it.

Welcome to another episode of the Biohacking Beauty podcast brought to you by Young Goose Skincare! In this episode, host Amitay Eshel, the CEO of Young Goose, defines what blue light is, why it can be damaging to the skin, and gives us biohacking strategies to mitigate the effects of blue light.

02:40 - Where blue light comes from

05:37 - How blue light can cause collagen breakdown

08:59 - How blue light exposure is associated with increased inflammation

10:10 - Strategies to protect your skin from blue light

14:06 - Young Goose products that help minimize DNA damage

    Key Takeaways:

    • Blue light doesn't penetrate very deeply into the skin, but it creates oxidative stress on the top layer of the skin. This can cause inflammation and lead to collagen breakdown.
    • Blue light exists and changes throughout the day, which lets us know what time of day it is and helps us reset our circadian rhythm.
    • Blue light can increase water loss in the skin, so using a moisturizer that can mitigate some of that loss is important.

Danijela Schenker: Microneedling, Softwave Therapy, and Collagen Overstimulation Mar 01, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome to another episode of the Biohacking Beauty podcast brought to you by Young Goose Skincare! In this episode, host Amitay Eshel, the CEO of Young Goose, is joined by Danijela Schenker. We discuss the different therapies for skin rejuvenation such as at-home micro-needling and softwave therapy.

She also explains why we should care for our skin sooner, her at-home approach to micro-needling, the downside of collagen overdosing, working on your skin from the inside out, and how to improve your skin barrier.

Danijela Schenker is a former ICU nurse for twenty years and nursing instructor, turned beauty biohacker, and health visionary, ten years ago. Optimizing beauty, health, and well-being is her passion.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Beware of collagen overdose if you’re practicing at-home micro-needling. You need to reconsider the intervals at which you subject your skin to this treatment. Micro-needling uses thin needles to make tiny holes in the top layer of your skin. The damage helps stimulate your skin's healing process, so it produces more collagen and elastin. However, doing this too often without sufficient breaks in between will eventually result in an over-production of collagen that causes the tightening and thickening of your skin. This will cause your skin to stretch, thicken, and harden.
    • Are you working from the inside out - or the outside in? From gut health to cell senescence, there are biological processes in our body that are behind most skin issues. However, since we only see the symptoms of these inside problems on the outside of our bodies, i.e. our skin, the beauty industry is very much focused on the end results and what happens to the skin on a topical level.
    • The studies prove it: you only need to integrate these 2 simple ingredients in your skincare routine to repair your skin barrier - and upkeep it. First, you should use a moisturizer that contains ceramides as it restores the lipid composition of the skin. Ceramides are waxy lipids found in especially high concentrations in the stratum corneum. Another productive way to keep your skin barrier in top shape is to use humectants. They work by drawing water and binding it to the skin barrier. Products that contain hyaluronic acid, like Young Goose’s Adaptogenic HA Firming Boost Serum, keep your skin hydrated.

    What we discuss:

01:16: How does Danijela perceive her clinic?

02:00: When did Danijela’s clinic open?

04:54: What are the core services Danijela’s clinic offers?

07:36: What other protocols are useful for skin rejuvenation?

    09:25: What is softwave therapy?

12:13: Why should we care for our skin sooner?

    14:02: What is Danijela’s approach to at-home micro-needling?

26:35: What is Danijela’s approach toward the longevity of our skin?

31:26: What are Danijela’s plans for the future?
