Beyond the Self with Africa Brooke

Welcome to our unfiltered corner of the net, created by me, Africa Brooke.

In a worldly sense, I am a globally acclaimed consultant, mentor, speaker, writer, and artist. My deepest desire with this podcast is to use my God given skills and gifts to remind us ALL of the power inherent in taking simple, consistent, and often uncomfortable steps towards personal integrity.

I’m all too aware that overwhelm and societal pressures make it easy to become fixated on external influences, tiptoe around potentially sensitive issues and cross our own boundaries in the process. And this kind of environment often leads to self-sabotage.

That’s where Beyond the Self steps in to be your guiding light. In this house, we FOCUS ON WHAT WE CAN CONTROL.

I will be using all my intellectual property, training, tools and wisdom to help you in uncovering your own blind spots and learning to tolerate discomfort so that you can rekindle curiosity, creativity, deeper and more intimate relationships, pleasure, play, and a sense of groundedness.

In every episode I’ll lay out encouraging insights about our shared human complexities, both messy and beautiful. I really do value a nuanced understanding and more importantly, practical, evidence-based tools and resources to help you integrate the learnings into your life.

If you’re looking for an uncompromising approach to personal development and life philosophy, you’ve found yourself in the right place. Here, we don’t hold back.

    Welcome to Beyond the Self.

#022 - What to do when change feels f*cking scary (LIVE Oct 2020) Feb 14, 2022
    Show notes

An audience member reminded me of this fantastic LIVE I did nearly two years ago. It was relevant then, but it feels even more relevant now - for reasons you'll discover as you listen.
Be it a romantic breakup, friendship breakup, job transition, career change, displacement, moving home, letting go of an old identity, entering a new relationship, discomfort caused by experiencing success, a shift in your health, or if you're feeling as though change is coming- but you can't quite put your finger on the details...this ep might give you some much needed clarity.
As always, I appreciate your time and attention. If you found this valuable - be sure to leave a review on Apple Podcasts, and share this podcast with your pals, family, and community - let's not withhold transformation from each other.⁣⁣⁣⁣

#021 - Are other people entitled to decide how you use your voice? Feb 07, 2022
    Show notes

"Those who have accepted self-censorship as a part of themselves tend to work overtime to justify the punishment of those who choose to express themselves openly, and without fear.

Often their outrage and calls for punishment won’t be based on the contents of what that person is saying, but the fury will be because that person is even DARING to say anything at all." - Africa Brooke

Discomfort gets a bad rep despite it being a crucial component if you want ever to want to exist beyond the confines of your 'comfort zone'. In this episode I make an argument for why we need to embrace it, instead of making an enemy of it. Let's talk about it!

This one was a lot of fun to record! Especially because this is a topic I think about often and love discussing. The idea that we are in full control of our thoughts and feelings is not entirely accurate nor is it something we should buy into without questioning...
BUT, when you convince yourself that EVERYTHING is out of your control, and then go through life on autopilot - it’ll be very difficult for you to cultivate emotional intelligence and emotional maturity.
So what does the middle ground look like? We explored it in this episode.
