Beyond the Self with Africa Brooke

Welcome to our unfiltered corner of the net, created by me, Africa Brooke.

In a worldly sense, I am a globally acclaimed consultant, mentor, speaker, writer, and artist. My deepest desire with this podcast is to use my God given skills and gifts to remind us ALL of the power inherent in taking simple, consistent, and often uncomfortable steps towards personal integrity.

I’m all too aware that overwhelm and societal pressures make it easy to become fixated on external influences, tiptoe around potentially sensitive issues and cross our own boundaries in the process. And this kind of environment often leads to self-sabotage.

That’s where Beyond the Self steps in to be your guiding light. In this house, we FOCUS ON WHAT WE CAN CONTROL.

I will be using all my intellectual property, training, tools and wisdom to help you in uncovering your own blind spots and learning to tolerate discomfort so that you can rekindle curiosity, creativity, deeper and more intimate relationships, pleasure, play, and a sense of groundedness.

In every episode I’ll lay out encouraging insights about our shared human complexities, both messy and beautiful. I really do value a nuanced understanding and more importantly, practical, evidence-based tools and resources to help you integrate the learnings into your life.

If you’re looking for an uncompromising approach to personal development and life philosophy, you’ve found yourself in the right place. Here, we don’t hold back.

    Welcome to Beyond the Self.

#062 - Tough lessons: owning your toxicity, using your voice confidently, the truth about success Sep 11, 2023
    Show notes

Prepare yourself for a thought-provoking exploration of three profound life lessons that shaped my path. Last year Steven Bartlett created a Self Development Coaching project, and I was one of the selected coaches.
I led the segment on mental health and different elements of spirituality, but through the lens of very grounded, realistic, sustainable self-improvement. I recently found many of the notes and lessons I did within that program. There were around 12 lessons, so today I'm sharing three of my favourite ones.

I share what sparked my path to becoming a confident speaker, why feeling victimised is stopping you from moving forward and how you view success (and not just in the entrepreneurial sense). So tune into this episode and hear me share these lessons, see how some of them have changed for me along the way, and let's create a conversation.

    #061 - Confession: I've been writing timidly Sep 04, 2023
    Show notes

Ever wondered what it feels like to get feedback that challenges you to truly be yourself? Well, I've had that experience recently when I received feedback on the first draft of my book. My editors were quick to point out that I was holding back in my writing. Sure, it stung a bit, but I've come to realise the value of their honesty. Let's be real, sharing openly about this is important.
As a writer, I've come to understand the power of seeking feedback. Although I'll admit, at first, it felt like a blow, I've come to embrace feedback as a chance for my personal growth. Striking that balance between staying true to myself and considering outside perspectives is a journey I'm fully engaged in.
I also share how hitting the milestone of turning 31 has sparked some deep reflections for me. This journey towards sobriety and self-improvement has been a wild ride. Not all smooth sailing, for sure, but each experience has played a part in shaping the person I am today.

#057: The freedom of choicelessness with Light Watkins Jul 24, 2023
    Show notes

In this episode, I had the opportunity to interview Light Watkins about his book 'Travel Light' and the fascinating concept of spiritual minimalism. We delved into the idea of choicelessness and Light explained how it can lead to greater freedom, peace, and contentment. True minimalism starts from within, decluttering not just physical spaces but also minds and beliefs.
I wholeheartedly recommend listening to this remarkable conversation, as it offers profound insights that will leave you feeling enlightened. The power of choicelessness and inner work that Light discusses can be truly transformative, guiding you toward genuine fulfillment and genuine self-discovery. Prepare to be inspired and uplifted by the wisdom shared in this episode!

Light Watkins is a 20+ year meditation practitioner and teacher who grew up in Montgomery, Alabama. He's written three best-sellers, including Bliss More: How to Succeed in Meditation Without Really Trying, which Book Authority called "The Best Meditation Book of All Time."

Light has personally taught meditation to Meghan Markle, Ava DuVernay, Rosario Dawson, and many other celebs and athletes. He's taught thousands of people over the years. And in 2018, Light got rid of all of his belongings and started living from a backpack.

This experience inspired his fourth book, Travel Light, which is about what he calls "Spiritual Minimalism," which is the practice of minimalism, but from the inside out.

#055: Why are you hiding in plain sight? Jul 10, 2023
    Show notes

This question has been on my mind lately as I reflect on the concept of visibility and authenticity. I've noticed that even those who are already famous or in the public eye can struggle with truly being seen. It's as if there's a disconnect between external recognition and internal discomfort.
Drawing from my experiences with clients who grapple with visibility, I see the profound impact of self-sabotage and self-censorship on our lives. In this episode, I explore the reasons behind hiding and invite you to break free from fear-driven self-censorship. Let's embrace our visibility and embark on a journey of honest self-reflection.
