    Being A Better Man

This show is about the character of men rather than the trappings of manhood. We will discuss the challenges men face from day to day, relationships, and personal accountability. We will talk about the finer points of manhood, and what it means to be a man in these modern times. It is all designed to lead up to a decision; the decision to be a better man today, than we were yesterday.

    TOXIC RELATIONSHIPS….

Before I get into it, I want to say thanks to everyone who has been sending me feedback about the show, and about the video spot HooplaHa did about us. The feedback I’m getting really makes my day. It makes me feel like we are on the right track, that the message is being received, and that it is having a positive impact in the world. So, thank you to everyone who has reached out and let me know your thoughts about the show…I do not take it lightly. It makes me feel like I should keep doing this.

Today’s episode is a result of some of that feedback. This is a listener inspired episode. The remarkable thing to me was that this was sent in by a man who is being a better man, and he is only 16 years old. That is so awesome, It’s great for me to know that people of his age are listening. His name is Mike, and his question was about a certain type of relationship that many of us, myself included, are familiar with.

Many of you will probably identify with Mikes story, he had been in a serious but toxic relationship. The girl in this relationship was manipulative and controlling and eventually had him become separated with all of his close friends, he was even getting in fist fights because of this girl, and it was putting stress on his relationships with his family as well.

After ending the relationship his friends and family came right back into his life with love and support, all of his important relationships have luckily been restored. But, it has been two years and Mike finds himself avoiding relationships with other girls, he is meeting nice girls but the memories of the pain of this toxic relationship prevent him from making new connections.

So, like I said…I think this is a pretty common story. It happens to guys all the time, and it happens to women as well. I have seen women and men get involved with very controlling people or energy vampires. They start influencing your behavior; how you dress, what you eat, who you hang out with and mostly…how you spend your time. People like this drive wedges between you and your family because they insist on being the most important thing in your universe.

Eventually, when the relationship falls apart, which it always does…there you are, left with the remains and rubble of your former relationships. In Mike’s case he was lucky that his friends and family rallied around him quickly, in many cases some of the damage that is done is irreparable. It’s understandable though, that Mike has become gun-shy about relationships…who wants to go through that again?

I can relate very well to this because like I said, this has happened to me. Yes believe it or not, I, your humble host am a former casualty of toxic relationships. Notice I said casualty, and not victim. I refuse to be a victim. The truth is I was a casualty, meaning I was hurt…but it was my own fault.

That’s the first point I want to make is that whenever we find ourselves going through something like this, it is a natural tendency to blame the other human involved, after all, they are the ones doing all the bad stuff not us, right? That may be true…but they could not treat you like that in the first place unless you allow them to. At some point you made a choice to give something up in order to be with them…thats your fault, just as it was my fault.

I want to acknowledge Mike, because even at 16 he already knows better than to trash talk the other person, that is very adult of him. In his letter he took responsibility for what happened and I applaud him for that. But now he’s gun shy…the prospect of a new relationship is terrifying and understandably so. It just so happens I know a thing or two about being gun shy as well.

In fact, there was a period of my life that I had such rotten luck with women that I just gave up…I quit. I decided that it just wasn’t worth it to me because it seemed that every single woman I met or that I got involved with was trying to change me into something else, or they were always controlling my time and my other relationships and I was constantly dealing with their drama, in fact life had become synonymous with drama.

It got so bad that I was actually considering finding a doctor who would castrate me at one point. I know it sounds crazy right? But that’s how bad it got. I figured that every bad thing that had ever happened to me was in some way because of a woman, or more specifically, because I kept getting involved with women. I figured if I got castrated then I would no longer find myself being involved with women…I would read more, be a better friend and a better dad, life would be…peaceful.

Thankfully, I didn’t go through with that plan. Instead, I made a choice to simply not be in a relationship no matter who I met and how awesome she might seem, relationships ceased to be an option for me. That lasted for a good 10 years in which I was intentionally single.

It was a good ten years. Life was peaceful, and fun. I still dated once in a while, but I was very clear that I wasn’t going to be anyone’s boyfriend. During this ten years I did a lot of healing and I really got to know myself very well. I realized that I was attracting the wrong women because my energy was wrong. I started working on changing my energy by living in a more deliberate fashion, designing my own life instead of letting life happen to me. For the first time I was in control of what sorts of interactions I had out in the world. It was somewhere during this 10 year relationship hiatus that I realized I was the only one responsible for everything that happened to me.

I was sort of like a monk who went up on the mountain for ten years…and when I came down off the mountain, I was a new man. I still made mistakes and I still made bad choices occasionally, but now I was in the driver seat, I was responsible and everything became a new learning experience. It was a brand new perspective. I was being a better man because I held myself accountable for everything that went wrong, and then I learned from these things instead of complaining about them.

So my advice to Mike, and anyone else listening who has been through the relationship grinder, who has became gun shy about new relationships is…maybe you don’t need to be in a relationship right now. Maybe the first thing you need to do is realize that everything that happens to you good or bad, is your fault.

If you are constantly attracting the wrong types of people maybe you need to evaluate what kind of energy you are projecting, maybe you need to look in the mirror, perhaps you should work on changing that energy so that you attract people who are kind and who are a better match for you before you jump back into the relationship ring.

There are plenty of great people out there…there really are. If you want to start meeting them and being worthy of them when you do meet them, then you have to become a great person too.

Focusing on being a better man today than you were yesterday is a great start. That’s really what it all boils down to actually. Simply by making that a focus you will create the energy shift I was talking about. As you gain more knowledge, respect, and admiration for yourself…the world will notice, and respond appropriately.

The world, and the people in it owe you nothing. You can’t expect to be treated well just because you are alive, you have to earn it.

So take a look in the mirror, start seeing yourself as the world sees you. If you don’t like something you see, then figure out how to improve it. You can’t expect the world to like, respect, and treat you well if you don’t like, respects, and treat yourself well first.

Thanks Mike for that letter, I’m really proud of you for being a better man, especially at 16. You have a promising future ahead of you.

Ok every body, head out into the world this week and be conscious of the energy you are projecting. see yourself how the world sees you and start improving the things that need improving…because that’s what you do when you are being a better man today, than you were yesterday.

    084 – Relationship Priorities Aug 05, 2016

    RELATIONSHIP PRIORITIES…

So…it’s Friday. Pretty happy about that, some pretty cool things have been happening lately. In case you missed it, This podcast was featured in a video on HooplaHa, Yesterday, which was August 3rd if you are listening to this after the fact.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the folks over at HooplaHa for doing such a great job! The video was professional and very well edited, and it got the point across I think. They are helping spread the word about this podcast. My only complaint is that in the video I look like some kind of ogre or something…but that’s not there fault.

What is HooplaHa you ask? HooplaHa is an online news organization that does something no one else does…they only report good news! Which is why they did a video about this podcast.

It might seem hard to believe in these crazy times we are living in, that there is an organization that only deals with good news…sounds like science fiction right? But it’s true. I recommend you go to their website and check them out, they are at hooplaha.com, I’ll post a link in the show notes too.

They have different categories, depending on what kind of good news you are in the mood for. The categories are; family, heroes, causes, animals and wellness. Stories that inspire, motivate and educate.

I am a huge fan of what they are doing over there, not just because they made this video…but because there is an extreme shortage of good news going around in the world today. There are so many things happening that are accomplishing nothing except dividing people up into groups, and quite literally tearing the country and families apart in some cases.

We have Black lives matter, and the opponents of Black lives matter, and all the other little groups who have their own agenda that piggy back onto one of the bigger causes. These things are dividing people.

We have the impending presidential election…if you want to call it that. It seems more and more like a circus every day and as time goes on people are becoming galvanized for their candidate in a way I have never seen before. It’s making people act in hateful, nasty ways towards one another on a scale that seems unprecedented…It’s really bringing out the worst in some people.

I for one, am getting sick of it all. I find myself avoiding the mainstream news because when I see otherwise intelligent people behaving like stupid animals…it makes me angry, and sad.

When I see everyday people suddenly become the enemy of people they were once friends with simply because they have a different opinion…it makes me angry, and sad.

In fact there are some people that I know quite well, they are relatives, they love each other. All of these issues going on in the world have succeeded in driving a wedge between them simply because they have different opinions…or because their opinion was interpreted incorrectly on Facebook.

I guess I just don’t understand why adult humans can’t disagree about something without people getting all crazy and emotional, and forgetting about the things that are really important. It doesn’t make sense to me. To me this behavior is just stupid.

So why does it happen? Why can differences of opinion in politics, religion, or other social issues make people act unkindly towards those they love? In my way of thinking, it all comes down to one word; Priorities.

This might hurt some of you a little, but in my opinion the bottom line is that if your family is a priority, if your other relationships are a priority in your life, then that relationship or family member will be more important to you than some ideology or idea that you are committed to.

I have said many times here that the most important, valuable things we have as human beings are our relationships…yet, I see people these days tossing their relationships away over a difference of opinion. What? Am I crazy or does that not make any sense?

Here’s an example of another way. Last weekend my wife and I took a long road trip to visit relatives. Somewhere in the middle of the trip we began a discussion about a topic that we did not agree on. It’s one of those volatile emotional topics that are in the news every day.

Weird thing is…it didn’t turn into a fight. We just talked about it from an intellectual position, we actually listened when the other person was talking. We conceded points that made sense, we framed our arguments in a non-emotional, non-aggressive way and you know what? It was amazing! It was actually fun. Because we were both being heard, we were both being respected, and it was an awesome conversation that lasted over an hour.

How were we able to pull that off? I’ll tell you how, Our relationship is the priority. That comes first, before the issue or topic, ahead of the need to be right. Whatever the priority is will win folks, every time. If you find your relationships falling apart because of these topics in the world today, you may want to re-evaluate what your priorities are.

Those people I was talking about earlier, that’s what they need to do. Reevaluate their priorities and put family at the top of the list where it belongs and stop squabbling about crap that won’t even matter in the big picture, after the dust settles. Family should always come first.

Look, I know it seems like the fate of the world is in the balance and these things are so important. But take a look back through history, stuff like this happens, it has happened for as long as there have been humans. Things become important and then they fade away, people are elected, time goes by and then other people are elected. There are hard times and there are better times, but through it all the most important thing in your life should be your family and close relationships…because without them, what do you have? Wouldn’t it be silly to lose a loved one over someone else’ idea?

I’m not just talking to men today, I’m talking to people, period. My advice is to make your families and close relationships a priority over all the chaos in the world. Do that, and you will be a better person than you were yesterday.

That’s it for today guys. Thanks again to HooplaHa for a great video, don’t forget to check out their website at hoopla.com and give yourself a much needed dose of good news.

    EXPLODING FRIENDSHIP…

Story Time with Alf is here!

Every Wednesday I regal you with a story from somewhere in my unusual and interesting life. It could be funny, sad, serious or disturbing, the important thing is that every story has a lesson.

Even though these are my stories, you can apply these lessons to your own life, or perhaps they will remind you of your own similar story and the lessons you learned from it. Either way, you should be entertained.

As you listen I really want you to consider your own stories, when did you learn these lessons? Can you remember? Sometimes digging up your own past can have great benefit, especially if you are made to remember that one singular moment in time when you learned something vital. It’s almost like learning it all over again. That…is the purpose of these stories.

In fact, I think there is nothing quite so human as the hearing and telling of stories. It’s how our ancestors conveyed critical information from one generation to the next. The stories told around campfires the world over are what eventually shaped our species into what it is today.

Today’s story called: Exploding Friendship, Happened when I was 16 and it taught me a very critical lesson that involves maintaining control of your intellect, reason and sanity.

    082 – Embrace The Unexpected Aug 01, 2016
    Show notes

    EMBRACE THE ENEXPECTED!

Welcome to Monday! It’s the start of a new week of life…and life, everyday is kind of an adventure isn’t it? Because you never know whats going to happen.

Well, I am your host, Alf Herigstad, and whats happening right now is this podcast…thank you for tuning in.

So, like I was saying, life…the living of it from one moment to the next is kind of an adventure. Oh sure, it doesn’t always seem like an adventure, especially if you are letting life happen to you.

A lot of it you can anticipate and predict…because it’s the same stuff that happens every day, large parts of life might seem boring or mundane…and they are, exactly that.

However…in everybody’s life, on occasion something unexpected happens doesn’t it? Someone says something you didn’t expect, or the car in front of you careens off the highway, a deer or rabbit runs across the road in front of you, you get a phone call with terrible news…or really good news.

Unexpected things happen all the time, to everyone. That’s why they are called unexpected…because we didn’t know that was going to happen, we didn’t expect it.

It is in these unexpected moments that adventure can happen. Some of these unexpected moments can be life changing, while others just become a story you tell at dinner that evening, but each and every one of these unexpected moments are critically important to your life, wether they are good or bad. They give everything else context, and it is in these moments that we learn.

Imagine for a moment, life without unexpected moments. Imagine a world in which nothing unexpected ever happens. I think there is a name for that; it’s called death.

Obviously, what matters most when these moments happen is what we do, how we react, and it is in these moments that we have an opportunity to know ourselves a little better, based on our reactions.

In these times we live in many people have it very easy, too easy in my opinion. Unexpected moments have become rare for some. These are soft times we are living in, and we as men in general are becoming soft as a result.

Lets think for a moment about our ancestors. Regardless of your heritage, all of our ancestors had something in common…every day for them was about survival. Every day was chock full of unexpected events. You never knew when you left your shelter in the morning if you would come back alive because almost everything in the world was trying to kill you.

How they reacted to these events made the difference if they would live or die, if they would have enough food for the winter, if they and their family would remain part of the community, at a time when the community was essential for survival.

Unexpected events were the rule for our ancestors…not the exception, as it is today. This way of life might sound harsh, and like a whole lot of no fun…but it also had its advantages; it made them keen, and sharp. Every man knew who he was, his limitations and his virtues. It made them strong and brave and let them know on a daily basis where they needed to improve. Every body back then was living as the best version of themselves…because if you didn’t, you might die.

That is how we got to where we are today. Because our ancestors succeeded, because they survived, here we are standing in their wake, the beneficiaries of their daily struggle. We are the product of everything they did.

So, what do we do with that information in 2016? How do we make this relevant to our cushy lives? How do we honor our ancestors for ensuring their DNA made it this far?

I’ll tell you how, by living life full steam ahead. By taking risks and chances, by doing the things we are afraid to do. By identifying those obstacles that are holding us back and crushing them. By creating for yourself an environment in which unexpected moments are the rule, just like they were for our ancestors.

Our ancestors didn’t have to create it, it just happened to them while they were trying to live, and they reacted. That’s how our species developed…that’s what we are really good at as humans; reacting to the unexpected.

Well, we are not are ancestors, we live in different times, our life has become too easy, so we have to create adversity, we have to name adversaries, we have to imagine the things that are trying to kill us…and kill them first. It might be our job, our friends our addiction to video games or fast food or it could be your own laziness and apathy. Whatever it is that holding you back, you need to identify the threat, and deal with it.

I can imagine some of you wondering what in the hell I am talking about. I’ll try to make it easier to understand.

You can’t let life happen to you, YOU have to happen to life. If you don’t have any immediate challenges, you have to create them. If you don’t have a goal you are working on then you need to get one and be committed to it. That’s the mountain you have to climb, that’s the bear you need to slay, to stay alive another day.

Is there something you have always wanted to do, but it seemed too hard? That is exactly the thing you NEED to do. Take a minute and ask yourself this:

“what sucks the most in my life right now?” Whatever the answer is…that’s what you need to attack. That thing, whatever it is, is the saber tooth tiger circling your camp…you are the man, so you need to deal with that thing right now, you need to slay it.

Ok, for some of you the thing that sucks the most is something you have no idea how to deal with. You feel stuck and helpless. I’m sorry but that sounds like excuses to me…and excuses are not valid.

We live in a time where anything you need to know is literally a click of the mouse away. If you don’t know how to fix something then learn how…get on line, do research and figure it out. You my friend need to generate the remedy…or deal with the consequences. The thing is…it isn’t anyone else’ job except yours to fix your life. So stop complaining, and start acting.

It’s kind of funny, starting out I was going to do a podcast on a completely different topic, but when I started talking this is what came out. I’m just shooting from the hip here, but apparently this stuff was somewhere in my brain and it wanted to get out. Hey I just realized this has been an unexpected moment in my life, and this is how I dealt with it.

To summarize everything I’ve said here, because I was on kind of a tangent, I’m telling you to…

Relish those unexpected moments in life and if you don’t have enough of them, create an environment that you do.

Honor your ancestors and thank them for your existence by living full out, intend to excel in everything, without excuses, and see every unexpected moment as an opportunity to learn and grow.

Figure out what sucks the most in your life and attack it until it is dead.

If you don’t know how to attack it…take it upon yourself to learn how, because it nobody else’ job.

I guess that about covers it. Now head out into this week of adventure and life that is waiting for you, and meet it head on. Savor all the unexpected moments, and be a better man today, than you were yesterday.

081 – Get Older How You Want To! Jul 29, 2016
    Show notes

YOUR’E GETTING OLDER…DO IT THE WAY YOU WANT!

So…this episode is being released on July 29th, 2016. It’s kind of a special day for me…because 54 years ago today, I climbed into this world kicking and screaming…I peed on a bunch of doctors, and my dad called me a homely little guy. Yep…today is my birthday.

I actually pre-recorded this episode a couple days ago because I am on a road trip with my wife. We are going to Idaho to visit her family and I plan on doing some fishing and gold panning while I’m there.

Now I know…it’s just now hitting some of you and you are realizing I said I am 54 years old. To some of you that seems ancient! Your wondering why I even bother to get up in the morning because I’m so old…I know, because that’s probably what I would have thought when I was your age.

It’s really not very old though. I can still do everything I could do when I was 20. Some things I might do a little slower…but some things I am way better at than I was then.

So that’s what I’m going to talk about today, age. It’s a funny thing age. I was never one of those people who worried about getting older, because I always believed that age was just as much a state of mind as it is a state of body.

In fact, I have been looking forward to my 50’s since I was in my 20’s. I know thats a little unusual, but I always knew I would keep my body in decent shape, and I also realized from studying older men that I would be way, way smarter in my 50’s than I was then. I’m happy to announce that I was correct! And let me tell you…imagine how cool it is being about twice as smart as you are now, in a body that you can still do anything you want it! It’s pretty cool. And when I say smart, I’m not talking about academic or book smart…I’m talking about life smart. The kind of smart that allows you to see whats in front of you and appreciate it. The kind of smart that lets you know life is too short to be upset or angry all the time…you know, life smarts, they make your life better.

Of course…it doesn’t turn out like that for everyone. I see people now that I went to school with and some of them look like they could be my dad, it’s really quite sad because it is completely unnecessary. Remember what I aways say; the things you focus on expand? Well if you focus on being vital and fit and enjoying life…then thats what will expand. If you focus on the fact that you are getting old…then that is the reality that will expand.

In honor of my birthday I decided I would put together a little list of tips that will help you age the way you want to.

1.) Take care of your body. Really guys…imagine if you got a car when you were 16 and you had to depend on it for the rest of your life. Well, that’s what your body is. So stay active and stop eating crap. That means no soda and very little processed food. Try to eat food that only has one ingredient, which is also the name of what you are eating, and drink lots of water and get plenty of sleep.

2.) Take chances, try new things, don’t ever let fear stop you from doing something. In fact, if you are afraid to do something that is probably a sign that it’s exactly what you should do.

3.) Never become satisfied with where you are. Men are designed to always be hunting, always looking out for a better situation. If you become complacent, if you find yourself feeling like you have the perfect life and you have everything you want…you have a problem. Because life is not about the destination, it’s about the journey. If your journey ends because you become complacent then your life will follow soon after, and your happiness will be short. Always having a new project, a new goal or a new milestone to conquer is what makes life worth living.

4.) Don’t let anyone, or anything, or any organization design your life for you. You have to design your own life. I know people that have lived someone else’ design…now they are my age and finally trying to design their own life, don’t be that guy.

5.) Play. Don’t forget to play, and have fun. Joke and be goofy and laugh as much as possible. The oldest, happiest guys I have known in my life are the guys who remained playful. look, you have to live every day anyway…why not have fun doing it? Practice finding joy in the smallest things and train yourself to be an optimistic, glass half full kind of person. Life is better that way, take my word for it, don’t take yourself too seriously.

6.) Know yourself. Find out who you really are as soon as you can, and then start improving that person. Be a better man today then you were yesterday and keep doing that until you die. This won’t keep you from aging…but if you can pull it off you will always go to bed content with yourself, regardless of how old you are.

So there you have it guys! My 6 tips for getting older the way you want to. Look you are going to get older either way…you may as well do it the way you want to.

    THANK YOU LADIES!

Todays episode is going to be a little different in that, instead of talking exclusively about man stuff, I’m going to be talking about women.

I don’t have access to the exact demographics, but I know for a fact that more and more women are tuning in to this show. I think that’s great, it’s fantastic, there’s room for everybody here. However, it does make me curious.

lf So first I would like to ask a favor of the women who listen to this show. Could you please go to the Contact Alf Tab and and write me a letter…what I would like you to tell me is, why you listen to a show called being a better man…if you are a woman.

I’m really curious, because when I started the show I thought there might be a few women who listen in, trying to gain some insight into the male mind, but I think it has gone beyond that.

I suspect there may be some single mothers of young boys who are looking for guidance, and I’m proud and happy to be a resource for you there.

There might be some women who are single and are trying to figure out what a better man would be like? There might also be some women in relationship who want validation that the guy lounging on their couch and eating their food is not actually being a better man. I don’t know! That’s why I’m asking. So if you would drop me a line that would be great.

I’ve had a few women ask me if what I talk about on this show can apply to women…if it can apply to people in general. Here’s what I think about that.

My gut reaction is that 90 or 95% of the stuff I talk about on this show and what my guests talk about is completely transferable and interchangeable between the genders. I’m not sure about that other 5 to 10% though.

We are all humans after all, the primary difference being our hormonal ratio’s. But…I also believe that men and women have some distinct differences, some of them caused by those hormonal ratios and I for one, am glad that we do have those differences, I celebrate them.

In general, women and men think differently, we act and react differently. I know this because I am married to one, I was raised by one and my sister and daughters also happen to be women…I have seen the mysterious differences first hand, and I think to deny they exist is foolish.

Here’s the thing though…I don’t know, what I don’t know. Having not been a woman myself I am not going to presume to understand all the subtle nuances that make them a woman. I am humble enough, and smart enough to realize there are some things I just won’t get unless I have actually experienced it…being a woman is one of those things.

That’s why I focus specifically on being a better man…because I know what I’m talking about there. I’ve been a man for a pretty long time, and I’m darn good at it. I can speak with confidence about the experience of being a man and I know what it means.

So, for you ladies who wonder if the things I talk about here can apply to you equally…my answer is, that I have no idea. It’s completely up to you, try it on and see if it fits. If I say something that makes no sense to you at all, it might be one of those areas we are different in, and if that’s the case it can still be valuable because its always helpful to understand how the other side thinks.

The same is true for you guys out there. I’ve heard so many guys complain about how women think and how they act. Trust me…we are just as mysterious to them as they are to us at times. Have you ever just listened…tried to put yourself in their shoes?

I’m not saying you need to agree or adopt their opinion or anything like that. I’m just suggesting that, as a man, if you are presented with the opportunity to listen to a woman, and hear the way she thinks, you should take that opportunity on in the role of a student.

Because even if it ultimately doesn’t make sense to you, just understanding the way the thought process flows and the motivations behind it, understanding the path in which conclusions are arrived at, can be infinitely helpful. You might become some sort of ninja that understands women, who knows?

I have to try and do this all the time, because of the physical disparity between me and my wife. I weigh around 270, she weighs around 125. That’s a huge difference…we are really living in two different worlds and sometimes I have to try and imagine what it is like to be her. At the same time, it’s helpful that she tries to understand what it’s like to be me.

That’s all it takes people, just a little bit of effort, a moment of consideration. Instead of getting angry at your partner…try to understand them.

If you can make that a habit your life will get a little easier and you will be a better man, and woman, than you were yesterday.

    WHEN MEN GOSSIP…

This is another listener inspired episode from Chris in Wisconsin, Chris wrote in wondering about how men should handle talking about other people. You know what I mean…you make a negative observation about a co-worker when they aren’t there. Someone walks by on the street and you make a little joke about them to your friend. Etcetera, etcetera…you know what I’m talking about.

It’s not limited to people, you could also be talking about a situation, or a group of people, or anything that is not directly within your circle. There is another name for this particular behavior…it’s called gossip, and it is not manly.

Ok first lets establish for the record that every single one of us, myself included, have been guilty of this…probably several times.

I get it…It’s a pretty common part of being human. But remember, we are not common men, we are trying to be better men. So lets take a closer look at this behavior.

First of all…why is it so bad. It’s fun to joke about people with your friends. It doesn’t hurt anyone because the people you are joking about or gossiping about can’t hear you, right?

Wrong. It does hurt someone…it hurts you. I said back on one of my first episodes that being a man is a responsibility and an example, because someone is always watching you, always! And whenever someone is watching you, you automatically become the example of manhood in that moment.

If you spend that moment making fun of someone less fortunate, or commenting negatively about someones appearance or actions or lifestyle, if you are putting someone else down in an attempt to elevate your own position…guess what? You have just failed at being an example of manhood, and that diminishes you, it makes you smaller.

Hey, it’s not an easy thing to stop doing. I am still tempted almost daily to make some witty remark, at someone else’ expense…and sometimes I still do. Being real honest with you…this is something that I am still struggling with.

Some things…a lot of things actually, just strike me as funny, and it’s difficult for me to leave a joke just lying there, without telling it.

    It’s important though guys.

The second half of Chris’ question was…how should we talk about people? How do we make observations about things without diminishing ourselves by acting like boys.

It’s a good question. There are things wrong in the world, there are people who are wrong and situations that are stupid. On any given day you can make hundreds of observations about things that are screaming for you to make fun of them, or gossip about them. How do we, as men who are trying to be better, handle that?

First, remember that our words…like our actions, define who we are, what kind of man we are. There are a couple really simple rules you can follow that will help.

The first rule is; Don’t ever say anything about someone that you would not say to their face. It sounds simple enough, but If you really start running this little test in your head before you say things, you might find that you say a lot a crappy things.

Its just common sense; it is not the purpose of a man to hurt people, make them cry, ruin their day or make them feel bad. It is the function and purpose of a man to help, protect, teach, learn, and be an asset. So if you have something bad to say about someone…say it to them, in the spirit of trying to help them, or don’t say it at all.

Here’s the second rule; If you are involved in a conversation about any negative situation or person. Do not just keep piling on the negativity. In fact, do not contribute to the conversation at all unless you can say something that moves it forward, or offers a solution, only then should you speak.

We’ve all been in a situation like this, where we are talking about something that really sucks…and everyone is just venting, piling on more and more negativity like pouring gas on a fire, which can sometimes lead to worse emotions like anger, contempt and even hate. Negativity is like a black hole that tries to suck everything into it and make everything around it negative as well…you should avoid negativity at all cost. And remember, the things we focus on expand…if we focus on something negative…it will only expand that thing.

There are more finer points to overcoming gossip, but for now If you start out just following those two rules, then you will have made a great change in the way you present yourself to the world. It won’t be easy…particularly during this election cycle, but I challenge you to try. Try these two rules for two weeks. If you mess up just shake it off and keep trying.

If you join me on this challenge I would love to hear how it goes and what you discover as you go through it, so send me an email.

Well, thats it for today guys. Thanks Chris for another great question, and thank you all for listening. Here are the two rules again, try them out:

1.) Don’t ever say anything about someone that you would not say to their face.

2.) If you are involved in a conversation about any negative situation or person. Do not just keep piling on the negativity. In fact, do not contribute to the conversation at all unless you can say something that moves it forward, or offers a solution, only then should you speak.

    FRENCH TOAST WARS…

Today’s story called: French Toast Wars is not for the delicate or queasy stomach. It’s a story about something I did that caused me to learn a great lesson about the difference between a true victory, and a hollow victory.

    076 – Relationship Recovery Jul 18, 2016

    RELATIONSHIP RECOVERY…

Today’s episode is a listener inspired episode. A Guy named Christopher from Wisconsin went to the web site and wrote to me, he asked a question about recovering relationships…or repairing them.

In the case Chris wrote about he was estranged from his father, sounds like due to a marital breakup and his dads military service which made him absent much of the time. They got back together for three years when Chris was a teenager and then they separated again when he was 16…and have not spoken since.

First of all, thank you Chris for writing to me about this and asking what the right course of action in this situation is. Sadly…lots of people out there are in similar situations. Christopher’s last sentence in his letter is spot on; he said

“I don’t want to lose him because I was too bullheaded to reach out”.

In a way Chris answered his own question with that one sentence.

There are so many children and fathers that have had their relationship interrupted by divorce, by work, and by the court systems, it’s a huge problem.

Many times, like in Chris’ case, boy’s get reunited with their father in their teens for various reasons. He said his father did help him out and taught him some great stuff but it sounds like their relationship was strained and difficult. Which is kind of natural and normal after being apart for so long.

Look, Dad’s are people too. They have feelings and heartaches and they make huge mistakes sometimes. Some dads are more mature and rational than other dads are. Being human, some dad’s are better able to foster a relationship with their children than other dads.

Life was not designed to be fair, and regardless of your particular situation you have to play the cards you were dealt to the best of your ability regardless of what anyone else is doing. I believe that’s one of your obligations as a man.

You guys listening to this might even become a dad in this situation, or you might already be in a similar situation. No two situations are identical either…they all have different elements, personalities, and difficulties. Every family situation is unique.

However, there are some things that are the same regardless of what your circumstance is. One of those things is the importance of family.

There are a lot of guys like Chris’ dad who will not make the first move. Some of them are being ran by guilt, they feel like they failed as a father and don’t deserve a second chance. Some of them might feel like so much time has passed…there isn’t any hope and their kids are better off without them, still other fathers might be afraid of anger and rejection from their children. Then there are some…the bad dads, that really couldn’t care less and don’t want to be bothered.

I believe, that in any situation involving emotional conflict with another adult human there is a course of action that will yield the best results and allow you to move on regardless of the outcome.

You have to be the larger person, you have to make the first move. Put your pride aside, you have to be willing to risk rejection and anger and heartache. You have to calmly put aside past injuries and reach out to that other person in an honest, authentic way. Because family matters…relationship matters, and if you don’t try you will never know, and that would be truly tragic.

In my opinion one of life’s ultimate goals is to get to the end of it with as few regrets as possible. Don’t be the guy lying on your death bed being regretful that you never reached out to your child, or to your dad. Don’t lay there sad because you were a small person in life. Be the bigger person.

Of course in the case of abusive people, or mean dangerous chemically altered people or people of extreme low character I would have different advice. But most people don’t fall into those categories. Most people are just flawed human beings that make mistakes who want to love and be loved. For those people…I say try.

The second bit of advice I have goes like this; if you try to repair a lost or damaged relationship be careful to not go into it with inflated expectations…you must be prepared to accept these people exactly how they are, not how you imagined you wanted them to be all your life. Accept and know them as people first…their faults and their virtues, and then as your dad, son, or other family member.
