How can streaming and interactive video be used in education?

    • 4 C’s are huge here - Using video to encourage communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity and encouraging learning to happen not only inside of the school building or district, but also globally.
    • Streaming/Interactive video helps increase engagement and ultimately comprehension
    • Live Streaming brings experts in the classroom and enhances the learning process.
    • “Virtual Field Trip”
    • Lends to various learning styles
    • Offering courses in a district across campuses where a teacher may only be available at one building and not another
    • Being able to offer coaching services to teachers across a district when an instructional or tech coach is not always available in every building / IT Support could also be done in this way
    • Interactive Video
      • Flipped Classrooms
      • Flipped staff meetings
      • Flipped PD
        • So many times teachers use the time factor to say they don’t have time to attend a PD after school that is face to face. Using interactive video in combination with choice boards is a great way to offer PD. Count the time by using an application that will show that they have watched it and answered some questions about what was presented.

      • Backchannel and / or reflection tool
      • Feedback tool for providing feedback to students

    • Streaming Services that include many paid subscriptions are great for enhancing content presentations

    Applications
    • Streamyard - Livestreaming, shareable studio right within your browser
    • Streamable Learning - Live, Interactive video highlighting K-12 curriculum...contact Matt for more info: friedman98@me.com

    • Google Hangouts / Meet
    • Skype
    • Edpuzzle - Make your videos your lesson or presentation by annotating and adding questions to your videos and check that your students have watched and engaged
    • Playposit-Live interactive video platform...a lot like EdPuzzle but more interactive
    • Insert Learning - Chrome extension that allows you to make any website a lesson, and in connection with today’s topic allows you to add your own video discussion or video annotation to a website

    • Twitter: @AskTheTechCoach
    • Email: feedback@teachercast.net

How are you building your tech coach brand?

    • How do I, as a coach, want to be known?
    • What do I want to be known for or known as?
      • Am I the Google lady? Am I the Microsoft Guru? Am I the BreakoutEDU lady, etc., etc.?

    • What do your teachers or administrators say about you when you enter the room or get introduced at a staff meeting?
    • Have a niche, know your staff (avatars as Jeff refers to) and what they need and what you can offer them.
    • Make it about your “client” - the teachers you work with - find something that will make what they already are doing easier or more efficient.
    • Don’t be afraid to make connections with vendors for products that you use and promote as a tech coach to your teachers.
    • Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, it’s not bragging - It is letting people know how you can help and where they can go to find help.

    Ways to build the brand?

    • Tech Coach Website - What is on it?

      • Be intentional about having your teacher visit your site. Make it hub that you direct them to with personal follow later
      • Susan’s Example

    • Blog
    • Video Tutorials/YouTube Channel
      • Personal video vs. self-made general tutorial
      • Susan’s YouTube Channel Example

    • Social Media
      • Use of private group to encourage all teachers in your building/district to share good things going on

    • Newsletter, “Potty PD” or variation

How To Gather Feedback From Your Professional Development Sessions

Why is it important to gather feedback?

    • Get a feel for where your attendees are either before or after a session
    • Figure out where to go next with a particular group or individual
    • For your own personal reflection as a coach to determine how the session went and if it was successful

    How do you gather feedback?

    • Watching faces, body language, verbal comments from group/individuals during the sessions - This will tell you a lot about if they are “getting it”
    • Beginning of year Professional Learning Feedback form - Sample from Susan
    • Exit Slip - Paper or digital - Much like we do with students in the classroom at the end of a lesson, why not use exit slips with teachers in a PD session? - Sample from Susan
    • Parking Lot - Paper or digital - teachers have the ability to place questions, comments, concerns on a paper or digital area
    • End of Year/Term/Semester Feedback Form - Sample from Susan
    • Follow Up Discussions - Verbal and using a school/local hashtag on Social Media through a FB group or Twitter Chat, learning management system, etc.

What types of questions do you ask on feedback forms?

    • How has the session been beneficial?
    • Have they had ample opportunity through the year for the training they need?
    • From George Couros and included and referenced in my sample Exit Slip- “Two Questions to Ask At the End of a Professional Learning Day-
      • What did you learn today?
      • How Will your students know and benefit?

    • Other exit slip questions
      • Name 1 new skill or idea you learned today you will try in your classroom within the next month.
      • Name 1 thing you would like to learn more about from today’s topic.

    • What other training on tools or concepts would they like to have in future sessions?

Applications to help you gather feedback?

    • Padlet
    • Jamboard
    • FlipGrid
    • Slido - during a presentation to gather feedback
    • YoTeach
    • Nearpod
    • Peardeck

What do you do after you receive survey results?

    • FOLLOW UP!
      • Use the I DO-WE DO-YOU DO approach to encourage teachers to try the skill after watching the tech coach model it, then collaborate on a lesson together, then have the teacher do it for themselves to gain confidence
        • This is a huge component of follow up whether it is from a large group PD session or a one on one/small group - continue the learning with Job-Embedded PD

Does feedback really do anything to your PD sessions?

    • Use the feedback you are given. Don’t just ask for it and then let it sit. Tailor your coaching to individuals and make them feel that they have a voice and part in their own learning as you give them what they need.

Do you share the feedback with anyone?

How Do You Come Back To Reality After A Conference?

    • REST

        • Get some sleep, calm your mind from all of that information and excitement racing around in your brain.

    • REFLECT

        • Take time to actually go through your notes while the learning and excitement is still fresh

    • PRIORITIZE

      • Get rid of items (notes, business cards, brochures, etc.) that you know you will never use and find 2 or 3 things you are excited and dedicated to trying in your classroom
      • Whatever you try in your classroom or coach a teacher to try, be willing to share that at the next opportunity whether it be a PLC/Team meeting, staff meeting, or a PD Day

Tech Coach Tip of the Week

    • When attending conferences such as FETC, TCEA, or even ISTE it’s important to wear multiple hats. As a Tech Coach representing your district, you should keep your eyes open for what will be useful with your teachers. As a Connected Educator, you should be reaching out to network with other Tech Coaches. Most importantly, you are going to the conference to learn how to be a better professional development provider so take advantage of everything that you have access to while at the conference.

How To Tech Coach At A Tech Conference

Make a list of sessions you wish to attend and add it to your Calendar

    • Add sessions that are both Tech Coach focused as well as sessions that might benefit your district and teachers
    • Attend sessions of “rockstar educators” to learn how others present both workshops and lecture sessions
    • Talk to your Administrators about what will be happening and what type of recon you could be doing for the district-let them know you are going to the conference

Prepare to do a TON of Networking-social media, face to face

    • Do your homework before you go
    • Hangout near the Press Room, Bloggers Cafe, and walk the vendor floor

    Take Notes

    • Use an App such as Evernote to take notes during the conference.
    • Notes can be video, audio, or written
    • Crowdsource your note-taking with others in the session or at the conference
    • If you can’t attend a session, seek out the presenter links from the conference website

After the Conference- Pay it forward with staff

    • Connect with presenters
    • Create Twitter Lists
    • Share your curated resources
