How Can Our Students And Teachers Take Advantage Of Free EdTech Apps During Social Learning Days?

    1. This is a great opportunity to try out some new tools but keep these things in mind:

      2. Be aware of privacy issues … like uploading student data
      3. Make sure that it aligns with district policy and curriculum

    2. Take advantage of Facebook groups. Educators are sharing templates and activities that you can make a copy and edit to fit your curriculum needs.
      1. HyperDocs
      2. Not so Wimpy Teachers
      3. Teachers using Google Classroom
      4. Teachers using Google Suite for Education
      5. Twitter: #remotelearning
      6. Book Creator Teachers

    3. Don’t get overwhelmed...start slow
      1. Start with tools that students are familiar with
      2. Make a collection of what you see by saving the link. (Wakelet, Google Keep)
      3. Start small until you get acclimated to distance learning.
      4. Simple can be powerful

    4. Take help if it’s offered

Show notes In this episode of “Ask the Tech Coach,” Jeff, Susan, and Matt discuss they have helped districts and teachers prepare for school closures in the wake of COVID-19.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • Twitter: @AskTheTechCoach
    • Email: feedback@teachercast.net

How do Tech Coaches support each other during this new time of learning during school closures?

    Cleaning Suggestion from Promethean:

    • Ethanol Alcohol based solution to wipe down the board,
    • Go find recommended cleaning procedures for any device from any manufacturer
    • Go out and Google best way to clean to alleviate voiding warranties.

Supporting Each Other As Tech Coaches

    • PLN Sharing
    • Make your force larger by banning together. Does your state support you in bringing district coaches together for collaboration/sharing?
    • Though coming across in your own voice to your teachers is important, during this time of implementing distance learning, don’t reinvent the wheel. If someone has a video or instruction sheet that works, use it if they have given permission.
      • Reach out to your teachers, find out what they need from day to day
      • Setup meetings as needed by what means you have available
      • Don’t get bogged down and “wowed” by TOO many resources, find one or two that work well for your teachers and encourage them to run with it.

    • Any group of students in a Google Classroom is a Google Group - Don’t forget the group is automatically there when class is created
    • From Promethean - sharing available resources to users, what are those quick and easy points that will get teachers up and going.
    • Find ways to record the content
    • Encourage structure and access needed

How Should Distance Learning Look When Schools Need To Close? Mar 09, 2020
Show notes In this episode of “Ask the Tech Coach,” Jeff and Susan discuss the many questions surrounding distance learning including how to approach the idea as well as logistical consideration to think about surrounding teacher work hours, etc.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    What is Distance Learning?

      • Distance learning can take the form of a class being conducted within a building or district for various student needs. It can also go so far as going from outside of a district for international study or college study.

    • Reasons for Distance Learning
      • Lack of course offering at a specific building
      • Dual Credit for college courses
      • Homebound/Extended illness
      • Need for bringing in experts on a particular topic during a normal instructional course

    • Questions/Items to consider when approaching the idea of Distance Learning
      • Safety for members and students - Ask questions to your district/building administration, find out what (if any) plans or procedures are in place
      • Actions/guidance from the DOE - Are there mandates at the state level regarding time off for “non-traditional” instruction?
      • Challenge to remote learning - What are the procedures for administering distance learning assignments? What about those students without a device or internet access?
      • Lost wages for some parents that have to stay home - Ask questions to your district/building on how to best address parent concerns that may arise.
      • Not thorough and efficient for special needs students - Think about ways to meet student IEP/differentiation requirements in a distance learning environment.
      • No breakfast and lunch programs for students in need - What resources are in place in the community that could help address the physical needs of the students?

How Can Tech Coaches Support Social Media Usage In The Classroom

    • Should classrooms involve the community in their daily activities?
      • It is important to bring the community stakeholders, and of course, parents in so they see the positive things going on in schools and classroom.
      • So much feedback comes from parents who enjoy seeing their students in photos throughout the day doing normal activities.

    • Should teachers create Social Media accounts?
      • Keep in mind school/district guidelines in personal vs. professional accounts.
      • Many people use Twitter in a more professional manner and Facebook for personal. Susan talks about this concept as Twitter stays professional with her, but Facebook is majorly personal with professional items added in because a tech coach and educator is “Who I Am, and I enjoy sharing that with family and friends.

    • Should school programs create Social Media accounts?
      • This is, often, handled through a district or school PR department as they develop policies in many cases as to how posts should be structured.
      • Sometimes, though, it is up the the teacher/sponsor of the program to create these accounts and keep them going to recognize student achievements.

    • Rules to follow when it comes to social posting
      • Know the school policy on photos and social media
      • Work with your school district PR department (if you have one)
      • Work with your teacher to see if students are or are not allowed to be on Social Media

    • When to post … or not to post
      • Talk this over with your principal/district leadership and gauge their support with posting to recognize student work and accomplishments.
      • Many teachers use apps such as Class Dojo, Seesaw, Bloomz, etc to share quick photos of students which parents love to see.
      • If it is something great going on and you are featuring various angles of a lesson or project, by all means, post those as soon as possible.

The Many Dangers Tech Coaches Face When Working With Students In The Classroom Feb 24, 2020

What Challenges Does a Tech Coach Face When Working With Students Inside a Classroom?

      • Establish that I DO-->WE DO-->YOU DO approach if at all possible so there is plan when entering a teachers classroom. However, this is not always possible. We want to build capacity, but in a way that will keep the teacher (and students) wanting more and feeling comfortable pursuing the technology integration as they continue through the school year, not just when the tech coach is in the room.
      • Understanding the needs of all students
        • Cultural, Behavioral, Special Needs that may or may not be communicated prior
        • It’s nice to know about these things before entering the room, but if slip-ups happen, you accidentally embarrass a student, or something similar; experience will lead you in the direction of handling these things with composure and/or humor whichever is appropriate for the situation. Don’t beat yourself up as a coach over these things, learn from it, chalk it up to experience building and keep moving forward.

      • Understanding the tech limitations of the classroom-
        • Always have that Plan B up your sleeve in case something doesn’t work all of a sudden or surprises arise.
        • Again, experience will lead here as you gain relationships with the teachers and the IT Department. Learn to be a listener when they say something isn’t working and don’t try to just be the HERO right then and there. Use this as a teachable time to go through proper channels as you put on your “Ed-Technician” hat for small amount of time.

      • Alienating the Teacher during a lesson -
        • Include the teacher as much as possible to the point they are comfortable - get to know what they are comfortable with by establishing those prior relationships

      • Establishing a management style and gaining students attention when the coach may only have a half-hour to an hour to truly get topic across
        • Enter into the lesson in a positive manner as possible and establish what a fun learning experience this will be both for the students and the teachers (age-appropriate of course - elementary will look much different cheering about Fun than high school)
