How to Onboard New Teachers into Your District During a Global Pandemic Jun 21, 2020
Show notes Are you looking forward to a new school year but it is just too early to bring new teachers into the building for training? Learn how to make the best PD decisions today! In this episode of “Ask the Tech Coach,” Jeff and Susan discuss a variety of ways that school districts can be successful onboarding new teachers before the school gets started! Whether it is physical or virtual, introduce yourself as the coach/trainer via video and send it out prior so they have a name, face, and voice to put together to make them feel more at ease. Physical Training
    • Acknowledge the various levels of background knowledge of the teachers coming in.
    • Think about a self-paced checklist for them to complete where you are not lecturing but having them complete a checklist for proof of knowledge and you are available to answer questions. We call ours “Getting to Know Tech at CASS” - SAMPLE
    • SAMPLE of a Technology Orientation Page

    Virtual Training
    • The checklist idea from physical training can definitely be incorporated here.
    • Utilize video. Get yourself an online video presence. Training does not always have to be synchronous. All of those questions you get all of the time, make them into quick tutorial videos for your teachers to access anywhere/anytime.

How To Run A Successful Virtual Bootcamp As Summer Professional Development Jun 14, 2020
Show notes In this episode of “Ask the Tech Coach,” Jeff and Susan talk about what summer PD and the summer conference training season will look like as we move forward in planning for a new school year and training teachers.

5 Strategies for Running a Successful Professional Development Bootcamp

A lot of what we have been doing in our classrooms over the recent weeks is going to hold over into summer professional development and conference planning as we work to train veteran teachers and newly hired teachers in virtual teaching strategies that can be successfully blended easily into a face to face classroom.
    • Relevancy - How do I determine what my teachers need? Have a vision of what the trainings should accomplish and for whom.
    • Flexibility - What are the advantages of running online trainings?
      • Anytime, Anywhere
      • Differentiated for the teacher giving them choice
      • Can be Self-Paced
      • Teach the idea of Flipped Learning by structuring PD this way

    • Getting Cute with Professional Development
    • Global Collaboration -
      • Virtual bootcamp style PD sessions allows for you to bring more teachers together especially if you are covering an entire school district. Many times coaches have to go from school to school and present the same training. Virtual allows you to bring those teachers together and create connections and encourage collaboration across the school system.

    Other Ideas:
    • Create your own PD online or vet what already exists and curate it for your teachers using YouTube Playlists, Wakelet, etc., etc.
    • Twitter Chats for your teachers
    • FB Groups for your school or district to provide training materials/resources
    • If you are presenting online “synchronously” have a moderator to help monitor the chat

How to Become a Tech Coach in 2020: Tips & Tricks to Nailing Your First Interview! Jun 09, 2020
Show notes In this episode of “Ask the Tech Coach,” Jeff and Susan talk about evaluating tech tools, things to consider, and working with administrators on purchasing needed technology for physical and virtual classrooms.

How to Score Your First Tech Coach Position

    Getting Qualified for the Interview
    • What makes you qualified to become a Tech Coach?
      • Reflect upon and own your strengths; don’t be afraid to tout your knowledge with back information of how your knowledge can help others.
      • Remember just because you are a “tech geek”, it doesn’t always make you a good tech coach. A good tech coach needs to be able to talk the tech talk, but also talk the talk at the level of the teacher/user/beginner, etc.

    • Are EdTech Badges necessary?
    • Should you look to get out of the classroom?
      • Reflection - Know your WHY! Why are you really wanting a position like this, make sure you have motivation driving you and not burn out or frustration driving you away from something else!

    • At what age are you qualified to begin teaching adults?

    Writing Your Resume
    • What does a Tech Coach resume look like?
    • How do you condense into a single page that usually takes up a ton of space?

    Preparing for the Interview
    • What do you bring with you?
    • Do you need a Tech Coach resume website?
    • How to do your homework on each school district.

    Nailing the Job
    • How to prepare for your first Tech Coach job interview?
    • What should you focus on?
    • What should you not focus on?

How To Help Your School District Make Good Purchasing Decisions Jun 01, 2020
Show notes In this episode of “Ask the Tech Coach,” Jeff and Susan talk about evaluating tech tools, things to consider, and working with administrators on purchasing needed technology for physical and virtual classrooms.

How To Help Your District Purchase EdTech

    1. Have meaningful discussions with your administrators
      1. Discuss the Why and the How in addition to the Who
      2. What is your purpose for purchasing this?

    2. Test Drive the Free Demos
      1. Many demos are still available through June. Give them a try and see what works best for your school and teachers.

    3. Make Friends with the Companies on Social Media
      1. These relationships offer many benefits to pilot new features and in many cases discounts and benefits of their ambassador programs.

    4. Discuss training and implementation of new applications (both physically and virtually)
      1. Think about all the different ways training should take place for different learning styles and needs for the time.
      2. Video tutorial, written instructional guides, face to face presentations

    5. Ask the question: “Should you be bringing in new tools”
      1. Is this a top down tool or a bottom up tool?
      2. Purpose is huge here. Don’t purchase a tool because it is the “trendy” thing to do. Fully evaluate how it will benefit your teachers efficiency.

3 Things School Districts Should Focus On During Summertime Professional Development May 25, 2020
Show notes In this episode of “Ask the Tech Coach,” Jeff and Susan talk about using lessons learned from the school year to design effective summertime professional development.

3 Things School Districts Should Focus On During Summertime Professional Development

Start with the Basics and Build From There
    • What was already in place that new teachers may not have been fully aware of?
    • What was in place that your teachers may need further clarified to better succeed?

Don’t forget about your advanced users
    • Build capacity among your advanced users. Equip them to support some of your basic users.
    • Collaborative sharing space to contribute new ideas or innovative activities that have worked for them.

Focus on the Why, When, and How … not just the WHAT
    • What happened this year to help you guide your PD plans?
    • How has your PD plan changed from what you may have previously had planned? Why did these events affect your plan?
