How To Support Our Teachers In The Classrooms

    • Create A Logical Curriculum For Your Weekly NewslettersWeek 1: An Introduction to an application or website
    • Week 2: A brief description of one or two things (maybe supported by a video) sharing the app or websites potential in the general education setting.
    • Week 3: A link back to Week 2 in case any teacher might not have seen the first bits of information followed by an example or two of how the app or website can be used in a few different subject areas. Perhaps give an example or a template of how a single activity can be used both in Math and Science
    • Week 4: Give the app a more featured role in the newsletter not only reviewing what you already sent, but with a more detailed walk through. At this point, you should be on Week 1 of a totally different app or website at the bottom of the newsletter to begin another cycle.

The Importance of Tech Coaches Focusing on Function and NOT on Application Nov 11, 2019
Show notes In this episode of “Ask the Tech Coach,” Jeff sits down with New Jersey Tech Coach Eric Guise to talk about the importance of Tech Coaches focusing on the function rather than the application. For many Tech Coaches, they are often in a position of wanting to push a specific app because it's the latest and greatest. However, for many teachers, these new and exciting applications aren't household names and it's often scary to think about introducing something new. So what is the solution? Rather than pushing an application such as Flipgrid, it's best to push the concept of “what do you want your students to be able to do?” and THEN work in a conversation about a fantastic application that can meet all of their classroom needs for free. In today's episode, we take you through several scenarios where teachers might ask a Tech Coach about a specific function or classroom activity and provide several great solutions for how to help that teacher bring technology into their lessons. Today's episode of Ask the Tech Coach is brought to you by Dyknow. When Technology Teams plan for technology integration, it is crucial to think about how teachers will manage student device distractions during class. Dyknow’s classroom management software empowers teachers to teach with technology by enabling real-time visibility of student activity to identify off-task behavior and redirect that behavior with blocking or messaging. Additionally, Dyknow enables teachers to create blocking plans, facilitate formative assessments, and view student history after class. • Define what tech integration is for staff membersUsing technology in the classroom?Simple: Kahoot / BrainPop
    • Advanced: Web Design / Coding
    • Going fully digital (paperless)LMS / Google Classroom
    • Using tech for tech or using tech to replace a previous non-tech itemSAMR

    • Offer to teach about Digital Citizenship
    • Highlight your tech-infused teachers and what they are model. Invite other teachers to watch them teach or use the tech in their own classrooms.
    • Focus on the curriculum and not on the tech.Teachers are more comfortable talking about curriculum rather than tech
    • Help them expand an idea, a lesson, or a project to incorporate a tech component that enhances the goal.
    • Encourage teachers to share their lesson plans with you and invite your assistance in remixing it.
    • Provide simple, step by step guides (written/video)SMORE
    • Slide decks
    • Google Sites
    • Include an area in these “crib/tip sheets” where you share 1-3 example lesson ideas incorporating the tech.
    • Don’t overcomplicate things when having conversationsListen to what they are asking … give them only what they want
    • Don’t jump into your first conversations by giving teachers a ton of new ideas that might overwhelm them
    • Simply ask why. What is the goal? Sometimes no tech is better than MUST tech.

How To Include Your Teachers In Professional Learning Decisions Oct 21, 2019
Show notes In this episode of “Ask the Tech Coach,” Jeff takes a look at several reasons why it's important for our teachers to be involved in their professional learning decisions. For so many teachers, they are told when to show up for PD sessions and given not much else in terms of a vision or professional roadmap. Because of this, Professional Development for many is simply meaningless. However, once a vision and a school or districtwide roadmap are put in front of teachers, they can then begin to understand the value of their professional experiences and begin to formulate a reason to take part in their experiences into their classrooms to implement new learnings into their lessons. Today's episode is brought to you by the Tech Coach Mastermind Program. Effective Planning for Technology Integration Oct 14, 2019
Show notes In this episode of “Ask the Tech Coach,” Jeff unpacks the key steps needed to begin planning your school district's Educational Technology Integration Plan. In this episode, you will learn why it’s important to not only clearly define your scope and sequence for creating a digital classroom but also why it’s important to give your teachers yearly benchmarks that will effectively meet the ISTE standards. If this topic is new to you, I would like to suggest that you also listen to Episode 64 where we first introduce the concept of EdTech Integration Plans and how they are created in response to your school district's Strategic Plan. If you are a Tech Coach or are in a Professional Development role in your district, I invite you to check out our Tech Coach Mastermind Program which is designed to provide you the tools and guidance needed to create a successful digital learning platform in your district.

    In this episode, we discuss:

How To Plan Your EdTech Integration Plan … Effectively

What is an EdTech Integration Plan?

The Importance of Planning To Plan

    • Having conversations with your staff about what they see in the classrooms and what is being taught to students.
    • Speak with other school districts about how they are developing their digital learning plans and how they are integrating their Tech Coaches into the conversations.

    Gathering Your Resources

    • Strategic Plan
    • Technology Plan
    • Teachers / Administrators / Tech Coaches

Start By Asking The Difficult Questions

    • How do we define “Digital Learning”
    • How are students being taught in the classroom?
    • Are teachers comfortable teaching in a Digital Classroom?
    • Are we properly supporting teachers in their digital classrooms?Technology
    • Professional Development
    • Understanding of Difficulties
    • Celebrating their Accomplishments and Failures

    Unpacking the ISTE Standards

    • Standards for Students
    • Standards for Teachers
    • Standards for Administrators
    • Standards for Coaches

    Defining our Verticals

    • What do we want students to learn by specific grades
    • Remember to work backward
    • Listen to what your teachers complain about

Start With Students … End With Students

    • The focus of your EdTech Integration Plan is to remember that it’s a document that will not only declare what students will be learning during the year, but how they will be learning and how the Tech Coach will be interacting with that learning to lead the drive towards a digital learning environment.

Show notes In this episode of “Ask the Tech Coach,” we take a look at the professional relationships we have with our students, teachers, and communities. Tech Tip of the Week

    • As a Tech Coach, we wear many many hats. Some of them we wear in the classroom and some of them we wear out of the classroom. It’s always important to remember that our positions were created to help move not just the students, but the communities into their digital futures and it’s important for us to be able to make ourselves available not just to our teachers, but to our students and parents as well.

    About our Cohost Josh Stamper

Joshua Stamper is a middle school Assistant Principal for a North Texas School District, where he's had the amazing opportunity to work at four campuses, two districts, and with hundreds of students, teachers, and administrators. Prior to Joshua's current position, he was a classroom educator and athletic coach for 6 years working with students in grades 6-8.
