    Ask Nurse Alice

Health is personal. Healthcare is complicated. And sometimes you just need someone to help you make sense of it all.

Ask Nurse Alice is where we talk about the health issues that actually affect your life, from the latest medical news and changing healthcare policies to prevention, medications, mental health, relationships, aging, caregiving, and the everyday choices that influence how you feel.

Each week, Nurse Alice breaks down what’s happening in health and healthcare in a way that’s clear, relatable, and useful. What does that new study really mean for you? Should you be concerned about the health story everyone is talking about? What questions should you be asking at your next appointment? And how do you take better care of yourself when work, family, and life keep competing for your attention?

You’ll hear candid conversations with experts, newsmakers, and celebrity guests, along with personal conversations about the parts of health we don’t always talk about enough. Nothing is off the table when it comes to helping you better understand your body, your health and the healthcare system you depend on.

Some episodes will teach you something. Some will make you rethink something. Others may simply remind you that taking care of yourself deserves a place on your to-do list, too.

Real talk. Real health. Real life.

Ask Nurse Alice gives you the information, conversations, and practical takeaways to help you become a more informed and confident participant in your own health.

DOING WHAT’S RIGHT CAN FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE, DO IT ANYWAYS: a pep talk to help you advocate for patients in the midst of challenges May 24, 2021
    Show notes

"I will go up against anyone to protect my patient. If I feel that something is unsafe for the patient I am not participating in it. Period." says Nurse Alice.
Doing the right thing isn't always easy, it sometimes takes more work, you could ruffle a few feathers and could add time onto your shift. But, doing the right thing is always what's best for your patients. We are here to do what’s in the best interest of the patient. Not what’s the most comfortable for us.

If medical errors were allowed to be a cause of death in our national registry - It would be the 3rd largest cause of death.
In this episode, Alice shares a personal story about an experience she recently had that was a "near miss" and could have been a medical error. Alice stood her ground and advocated for her patient. Even though the other nurses were visibly frustrated with her, Alice remained strong for her patient despite it all.

Talking about near misses is important and is not talked about enough. It's time to reframe how we think about not just doing what’s easiest but what’s best for the patient. The key is working collaboratively on behalf of the patient’s best interest.

“Nurses, you should not feel bad for doing the right thing for your patient. We should not be afraid to communicate with providers. We should not be scared to ask for the things we know our patient needs. Never be afraid to express your patient's concerns. Just because you have a concern doesn’t mean that your other team members are “bad.”

FINDING YOUR POWER AS A NEW NURSE: overcoming stress and anxiety during the first years of nursing (with Janell of Novice is The New Nurse) May 17, 2021
    Show notes

“Nurses Eat Their Young” is an unspoken secret in the nursing profession. A culture of bullying, negativity, and stress torments the new-nursing community. Jannel of @noviceisthenewnurse is on a mission to empower new nurses and help them turn challenges into healing. She recently launched her book titled, “Lavender and Peppermint Tea” - a self-help book focused on journal prompts and activities to uplift novice nurses.
Graduating from nursing school is one of the most exciting times in your life. You get to (finally) ditch those nursing school scrubs, don your official work badge, and head to work to care for patients on your own.

You’re excited and ready to tackle the world. And then, reality sets in. You may struggle with feeling lost as you transition from student to RN, deal with feelings of anxiety in your new role (Did you remember to waste that med properly? OMG did you forget to give 201A his pain meds?? Does the doctor you woke up at 3 AM hate you forever?!), and all-around stress as you navigate life at the bedside. And although you may be lucky enough to get a new nurse orientation at your facility, for many new nurses, a few weeks of shadowing is simply just not enough.

One fact is for certain: adjusting to life as a new nurse can be a challenge for many. And that’s where Jannel of @noviceisthenewnurse comes in. As the co-founder of Novice is the New Nurse, Jannel is on a mission to change the way that new nurses are supported–both personally and professionally and she’s got the tools to help make that happen. Jannel spoke with Nurse Alice on a recent episode of the Ask Nurse Alice podcast about her work with new nurses and how she is dedicating herself to building new nurse wellness and confidence.

Nurse Alice tells her heartbreaking experience of working a COVID shift in a hard-hit community hospital. The experience still gives her chills to this day. Later, she interviews filmmaker and TedX Speaker Alec Fischer about his film project highlighting nurse's stories from the frontlines.

    • Patience: A DNP/Nursing Faculty member and single mom who was very afraid of contracting COVID and what it would mean for her children
