'Don't Get Mad... Get Busy!' - (Carol Thomas Cissel) Nov 17, 2013
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, November 17, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Minister Carol Thomas Cissel, Resident Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Every now and I then I get good and mad… and stay mad… and wallow around in it for a little while. The other day, while in that frame of mind, I went online and looked up quotes on, “How to deal with anger.” They were all very mushy, cosmic, and woo-woo. Most of them said I needed to get into right relationship with the folks I am mad at, or maybe give my anger up to the Universe. Yeah, right. I don’t think so. See, I do not believe there is anything wrong with getting angry or upset. The thing to remember is that anger is a sly, dangerous emotion. It can consume us, and get in the way of our creating full, productive, genuine lives. It can pull us away from others. It can blind us, and stop us from being in touch with our most authentic feelings. But anger can also propel us to action. It can be our response to what is wrong in the world, and it can motivate us to work for change. There is nothing like a good dose of righteous UU anger, directed well, to offer the proverbial kick in the pants and get things moving forward. As the world rages on, we often rage along with it. There are a plethora of problems and people in this world that regularly tick me – and probably you – OFF. • No decent bus service between Swan Drive and All Souls • Red light cameras • Liars • Politicians that lack integrity • Stubbing my toe at night, on the corner of the bed… AGAIN! Problems, big and small, exist. Still, in the midst of them we are called upon to figure a way out of the “red haze of anger.” Come to church this Sunday. Let’s talk about anger. 'A Woman's Spirit' - (Rev. Marlin Lavanhar) Nov 03, 2013
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, November 3, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION It can be pretty presumptuous for a man to stand up and speak about a woman’s spirit, though it hasn’t stopped male clergy from doing just that for many millennia now. But my message this week isn’t aiming to describe the role of women’s spirits in the family, the workplace, or American society; I want to share the story of one woman’s spirit in particular. You almost certainly know of this woman, whose place in history and legend continues to impact hundreds of millions of lives. 'We're All Doing Time' - (Rev. Barbara Prose & Randy Lewis) Oct 20, 2013
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 20, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Assistant Minister, and Minister Randy Lewis, Adjunct Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION The United States has the highest documented incarceration rate in the world. America locks up more of its citizens than Iceland, Japan, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Ireland, Germany and Italy… combined. Wait, it gets worse. Oklahoma ranks first in the nation in the incarceration of women, second in the incarceration of black men, and third in the incarceration of men. As members of a community of faith, we have a responsibility to resist a local culture which doesn’t seem to believe that redemption is real or that people deserve second chances. Both of us have been involved with the criminal justice system in different ways over the years. We share a passion for justice and a desire to work together to make changes in our state. We hope you will come hear what we have to say about our broken system and join us as we continue to build our own, Free InDeed Prison Ministry here at All Souls. 'Why Life is Not Fair' - (Rev. Marlin Lavanhar) Oct 13, 2013
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 13, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION In a childhood version of ethics and faith, good things happen to good people. Yet tragedy and misfortune are much less discriminating than that. A drunk driver hits a car and survives, while in the hit car a small child dies. Such events defy all concepts of fairness. Religions too often seem to become apologists for a God who would create such a cruel world. And many Atheists site such cruelty as proof that there can be no God. Often, in people’s explanations of how and why bad things happen to good people, they unwittingly present theories and theologies that not only insult our intelligence but that ought to insult even “the gods!” This Sunday, I want to have a courageous and honest conversation about why life is not fair and what we might do about it. 'The Temptation To Be Good' - (Rev. Marlin Lavanhar) Oct 06, 2013
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 6, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION In October we launch a new theme for the month and it is Evil. Few topics are as exciting or challenging for a theologian or philosopher. To reconcile the purpose of creation or the existence of God with the reality of evil is the challenge of every moral person. The temptation to be good, it seems, is often less powerful than the temptation to immorality in all its titillating and exhilarating forms. Last month I discussed how we can avoid being thrown off course by difficult people and situations, and this month I’ll also explore how temptation and evil can knock us off our path. Come and explore with me the nature of our identity, who we think we are, and why it matters. 'Who Do You Think You Are?' - (Rev. Tamara Lebak) | Contemporary Sep 29, 2013
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 29, 2013, during the contemporary service at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Associate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION In the Hebrew Scriptures, God creates humankind "in his own image." (Genesis 1:27) The word image refers to representation or perception, and the Latin, imago, also means the final stage of metamorphosis. Our identities are collages of our thoughts, feelings, and experiences, mixed with an understanding of how other people experience us. We craft an image of ourselves as we encounter each other and the world. That image of ourselves – who we think we are – is also influenced by our culture. Identity, very much like our understanding of the world, is socially constructed. In Sartre's seminal work No Exit, he presents Hell as a place where we are defined solely upon how other people perceive us. In Sartre's version of Hell, we have no power over how we are perceived. The power lies entirely in the hands of others. Have you ever felt powerless over how you are viewed? This can happen when we feel categorized; it can happen when we feel defined by a single event in our lives; it can happen when we are stereotyped as only gay, only liberal, or only a person of color, and not as a complex human being. Come and explore with me the nature of our identity, who we think we are, and why it matters. 'Dealing with In-Laws, Teenagers and Religious Fundamentalists' - (Rev. Marlin Lavanhar) Sep 22, 2013
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 22, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION At All Souls there is a painting hanging in the foyer that tells the story of our church. Over the years I have found it to be one of the most compelling and memorable ways to describe All Souls to visitors and those who inquire about us. In this beautiful image you will find the basics of our history, our values, our theology and what we hold most dear as a community. On Sunday I will share that picture and that story with you in a way that you can use to tell your family and friends and others who may ask you. The painting, like our world, is filled with simple gifts that are free and available as long as we help keep them alive.
