Seven Deadly Sins: Lust a Little - (Pastor Randy Lewis) Jul 07, 2013
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, July 7, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Pastor Randy Lewis, Adjunct Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION The summer sermon series “Seven Deadly Sins” presents new approaches to, and twists on, the antiquity's infamous grave transgression list. Lust is such an ominous word. It means "intense desire or craving" and can take many forms. When used in relation to power or wealth, we are discouraged from lusting. But it is often permissible to have lust for life... a fulfilling life in all its varied forms and arrangements. So, when it comes to a fulfilling life, I say, "lust a little." NOTE: We use the Our Whole Lives (OWL) curriculum with our 7th graders. For more info, contact Children's Religious Exploration Administrator at 918-743-2805 ext. 321. Unchain My Heart - (Rev. Tamara Lebak) Jun 09, 2013
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, June 9, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Associate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Ray Charles was a border walker. He was a pioneer in the genre of soul music during the 1950s by fusing rhythm and blues, gospel, and blues styles into his early recordings with Atlantic Records. He also helped racially integrate country and pop music during the 1960s with his crossover success on ABC Records, most notably with his Modern Sounds albums. While with ABC, Charles became one of the first African-American musicians to be given artistic control by a mainstream record company. Frank Sinatra called Charles “the only true genius in show business." The influences upon his music were jazz, blues, rhythm and blues and even country. His piano playing reflected influences from country blues, barrelhouse and stride piano styles. Criticized and beloved, Ray Charles’ influence stemmed from his capacity to embrace and adapt without losing his identity. Come explore what we can learn about how to live our lives through the lens of this incredible musician. WANT TO LISTEN? If I Had Only Known - (Rev. Marlin Lavanhar) Jun 02, 2013
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, June 2, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Some of the most important lessons and transitions in life do not come with diplomas and festivities. We do not always have something to hang on the wall to show the world that we have made it to the other side of some test or trial. There’s an expression, “If I only knew then, what I know now…” As we honor and recognize those who are formally graduating in this season, I thought I might offer some of the things I wished I had known when I was leaving school and heading into the adult stage of my life. He Said What? - (Eric Banner) May 26, 2013
    Show notes

The message was delivered on Sunday, May 26, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Eric Banner, Intern Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION We often live our lives as though if we could all agree on how to say what is true, then everything else would fall into place. And it is true that sometimes that is an important step along the way. But words have meaning that depends on their context and the person who's saying them. The same sentence can come from two different people and mean two very different things. We've all had the experience of saying something exactly as we mean it, only to discover that what someone heard wasn't what we meant at all. In a congregation and community as diverse as ours, filled with people of differing ages, theologies, ethnicities and different economic situations, it can be hard to understand each other from time to time. If you've ever heard someone say something that really upset you, only to find out later they didn't mean what you thought you heard at all, this Sunday is for you. Because it turns out the truth is so much more than words. A Mighty Spirit - Rev. Marlin Lavanhar May 19, 2013
    Show notes

The message was delivered on Sunday, May 19, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION One of the fastest growing and most misunderstood types of Christianity is Pentecostalism. For Christians May 19th is Pentecost Sunday. I look forward to sharing a powerful, progressive religious idea that my colleague Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis in NY City calls the “Pentecostal Paradigm.” If you never understood (or have never heard of) Pentecost you will discover something very special. If you have a Pentecostal background and wonder what it has to do with the religion and spirituality you find at All Souls, this message offers some answers. Atheist Spirituality (The Point) - Rev. Marlin Lavanhar May 19, 2013
    Show notes

The message was delivered on Sunday, May 19, 2013, during The Point, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Many people do not understand the difference between spirituality and belief in God. Most Buddhists do not believe in God (they are Humanist) and yet they are world renowned for their teachings of spirituality and spiritual practices such as meditation. Brain science and evolutionary science has helped explain some of what is understood today as spirituality. As Pentecost is celebrated by Christians around the world, let’s look at movements of the spirit from a Humanist perspective.
