All Souls: Our True Colors' - (Rev. Marlin Lavanhar) Sep 15, 2013
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 15, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION We recently asked some media and communications professionals whether All Souls is relevant in today’s world. Here’s what they told us: Now, perhaps more than ever, people are confused, disenfranchised, disillusioned and even angry about the way they feel they have been mandated, instructed, and forced into thinking about their world, people, God, and spirituality. The world is connected in a way, for the first time in history, that allows them to share in people’s cultures, beliefs, happiness, pain, ideas, and persecution like never before. They are questioning traditional creeds, what they mean, and the impact they have on humanity, our connection to one another, and our collective future together. All Souls’ Vision aligns with how more and more people see their world, their place in it, other cultures, their spiritual nature, and the impact that religious teaching and action should have on humanity. 'Syria: To Bomb or Not to Bomb' - (Rev. Marlin Lavanhar) Sep 08, 2013
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 8, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Right now, our president, our military leaders, and our Congress are debating bombing Syria, which they are claiming is necessary to our national security. In other words, they are contemplating an attack that will inevitably kill and displace civilians, including women and children. We, as Americans and as citizens of the world, have to explore the morality of action and inaction in the face of the devastation and carnage. This morning, I come in the tradition of the American preacher as a prophetic voice in our democracy to lay out the moral issues and the criteria for action or inaction in the Syria crisis. 'This Work We Do' - (Rev. Barbara Prose) Sep 01, 2013
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 1, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Assistant Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION I turned fifty this year and started working out. At CrossFit classes I’ve learned what burpees, back squats, and box jumps are. The more energy I expend at the gym, the more energy I have for the rest of my day. Working out, and our work matters. It shapes our lives as individuals and as a congregation. How much we work, how much we get paid for our work, where we work, why we work… all matters. In our church, we have young adults looking for work for the first time, and older adults wondering what they will do after they retire. We have middle-aged folks in the middle of mid-life crises and retirees who make the work of the church possible because of how they generous they are with their time. Why do you do the work you do? This Labor Day weekend, we’ll explore the meaning and value of work in our lives and celebrate the work we do! 'Demands, Not a Dream' - (Rev. Gerald Davis) Aug 25, 2013

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, August 25, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Gerald Davis, Adjunct Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION August 28 will mark the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Like most watershed moments in U.S. history, there is a back story. As we do, in our church culture, we "seek the truth in love." Join me as we allow the scales to fall away in order to see with transformed eyes. Social NOTworking - (Rev. Marlin Lavanhar) Aug 18, 2013
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, August 18, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Today we have powerful tools for social networking, but in many ways they are not working. We are social creatures and we need one another, yet, as society and technology change, we do not always know if our former ways of doing things still apply. It can be hard to know anymore what the rules are for parents, children, relationships, dating, and much more. Let’s examine how to create social networks that work for us and not against us. Bucket Lists - (Rev. Marlin Lavanhar) Aug 11, 2013
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, August 11, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION This summer I was invited to join two different people in checking something off of their “Bucket Lists.” One involved fly-fishing in Colorado, and the other was to attend a heavy metal concert – Ozzy Osbourne with Black Sabbath. Some people might find it surprising, but I not only had a blast, I found intrinsic value in both. These experiences also caused me to think about what items might be on my own list. What essential things do I hope to accomplish before I die? As I look to the Bible, the Buddha, and other sources of inspiration and wisdom, I realize that having some things on a Bucket List can be very important. What’s on your Bucket List? Grin and Swear It - (Rev. Tamara Lebak) | Contemporary Service Aug 04, 2013
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, August 4, 2013, during the contemporary service, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Associate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION According to New York Times columnist Natalie Angier, “Cursing… is a human universal. Every language, dialect, or patois ever studied, living or dead, spoken by millions or by a small tribe, turns out to have its share of forbidden speech.” Why do we swear? Somehow this temptation of forbidden fruit is serving human beings across cultures. One recent study claims that swearing produces the positive side effect of improving our ability to withstand pain. Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage from MythBusters employed a technique commonly used by researchers called the “cold pressor test” to assess this claim. Participants anchor their arms in ice water until they can no longer tolerate the freezing pain, while reading off a list of non-curse words. Then, they repeated the process while swearing up a storm. Spewing expletives evidently increases suffering stamina by a measurable average of 30 percent. And yet, persistent complaining can also keep us stuck, limiting our perceived choices, and keeping the very thing we would like to change the same. Join me this week as I explore the power of words to change our present and our future.
