'Who Do You Say I Am?' - (Rev. Tamara Lebak) - Contemporary Service Mar 16, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, March 16, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Associate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION In the fall of this year, a member of the congregation purchased my sermon at the auction. Her desire is that I preach on Big Data. This Sunday at the 8:30 service I will dive headfirst into Big Data and its implications for understanding who we are as consumers and human beings. Data is constantly being generated from our phones, televisions, credit cards, planes, Internet searches, traffic patterns, and so much more. According to Jonathan Shaw, writer for Harvard Magazine, “The data flow is so fast that the total accumulation of the past two years a zettabyte dwarfs the prior record of human civilization.” The revolution of Big Data and why everyone is talking about it is not the amount of data, itís that we have created new ways to process, analyze, and even visualize that data to make it useful. Using Big Data effectively is what has allowed Amazon to potentially be better at predicting what you are planning to buy next than your partner. In the 10:00 and 11:30 services I will expand into the religious implications of the correlation of data to understanding ourselves and our world. 'Who's in Charge?' - (Pastor Randy Lewis) Mar 09, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, March 9, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Pastor Randy Lewis, Adjunct Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION In today’s America, there is a great deal of conversation about the role of religion and how influential it is and should be. If we were indeed a Christian nation, then, rightly so, our laws would reflect that. However, is America not referred to as “the melting pot?” Are we not made up of many different cultures and people, with different religious and political views? What we believe often shapes who we are, how we perceive the world around us, and how we treat people. How do we learn to love and care for others, especially when they are different or believe differently than we do? How can we apply love to those who claim supremacy because of religion? Whose beliefs are the right ones, when religion, politics, and one’s own personal preferences clash? 'Who Do They Say I Am?' - (Rev. Marlin Lavanhar) Mar 06, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Another title could be, “If You Meet The Buddha on the Road, Kill Him!” This was a book title some years ago. The book tried to help people realize that no guru, therapist, or religious leader should become an idol, nor do they have all the answers to life’s problems. The idea is that all of us are just human beings struggling in our own ways along the paths of life. We are meant to look inward for truth and understanding that will ultimately help us take responsibility for our own growth, destiny and healing. We can help one another and need each other, but we also must accept that we are the authority when it comes to our own values, beliefs and actions. When we take authority for our own lives, we take responsibility as the author our own story. Who are your authorities in matters of deepest concern? How do you take responsibility for your religious life? Do you let others impose their beliefs, values and interpretations upon you and why? In Oklahoma, we deal with this almost every day as we live in a culture that is filled with people making, what they believe, are authoritative religious claims about what is right and wrong. I want to talk about where religious authority comes from. 'The Free Church Around the World' - (Rev. Barbara Prose) Feb 23, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 23, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Assistant Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Earlier this month, I spent almost a week with church members and ministers from Unitarian and Universalist and UU congregations from ALL around the world. It was fascinating to meet and talk, worship and learn, play and pray with people from Austria, Australia, Belgium, Burundi, Canada, Colombia, Hong Kong, India, Kenya, Mexico, the Netherlands, Nigeria, New Zealand, the Philippines, Spain, South Africa, Transylvania, and the United Kingdom. Talk about cultural differences! But despite the language barriers and the cultural gaps, we came together as one. This Sunday we will explore the power of this free faith that unites so many people, across great distances, and despite the passage of time. 'None of Us Are Free' - (Minister Randy Lewis) Feb 09, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 9, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Randy Lewis, Adjunct Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Freedom is defined as liberation from slavery or restraint or from the power of another. All over the world, there are those longing for, fighting for and standing for freedom. In America, these freedoms are often taken for granted. In the “land of the free”, we see freedom as our birth right; something that was earned long ago by people we read about in history books. In reality, we should ask ourselves whether we have done the work necessary to claim our right to freedom and if our work for freedom is really done. 'Stupid Things White People Say' - (Rev. Tamara Lebak) Feb 02, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 2, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Associate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION It is African-American History Month. At All Souls, we will celebrate all month at 10:00 and 11:30 with Soulful Journeys , an exploration of African-American history and the African-American Spirit through music. At the Point, I will examine some of the surprising things well intended people say that perpetuate, if not widen, the diversity gap. I have said them; you have likely said them. We probably hear them regularly. Join me in learning the intent behind some of these statements that separate us, and ways to bridge to connection when we, or someone we love, inserts their foot in their mouth. "God" Revised - (Rev. Galen Guengerich) Jan 26, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, January 26, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Galen Guengerich, Guest Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Over the past few decades, the ever-expanding scientific knowledge of the universe and the human condition, combined with the shift from religion-based to personal morality, has led to a mass crisis of faith. Leaders of most Protestant and Catholic religious traditions, which include nearly 80 percent of Americans, have watched their memberships stagnate or dwindle. Over the years, philosophers and scientists have argued that science has in fact “killed” God, and that if we believe the facts science has presented, we must also accept that God is fiction. Others, holding fast to their long-standing doctrines, attempt to justify their beliefs by using God to explain gaps in scientific knowledge. Having left an upbringing in a family of Mennonite preachers to discover his own experience of God, Galen Guengerich understands the modern American struggle to combine modern world views with outdated religious dogma. Drawing upon his own experiences, he proposes that just as humanity has had to evolve its conception of the universe to coincide with new scientific discoveries, we are long overdue in evolving our concept of God. Gone are the days of the magical, supernatural deity in the sky who visits wrath upon those who have not followed his word. Especially in a scientific age, we need an experience of a God we can believe in — an experience that grounds our morality, unites us in community, and engages us with a world that still holds more mystery than answers. _______________________________________________ Rev. Galen Guengerich is Senior Minister of All Souls Unitarian Church in New York City. He was educated at Franklin and Marshall College (BA, 1982), Princeton Theological Seminary (MDiv, 1985) and the University of Chicago (PhD, 2004). He writes a regular column on “The Search for Meaning” for psychologytoday.com, and his sermon, “The Shaking of the Foundations,” delivered Sept. 16, 2001 – the Sunday after 9/11 – was selected for inclusion in Representative American Speeches 2001–2002 along with speeches by Governor George Pataki, President George Bush, and Mayor Rudolph Giuliani as one of seven “Responses to September 11th.” His most recent work, God Revised: How Religion Must Evolve in a Scientific Age, was published in May. 'Ordinary Love' - (Rev. Gerald Davis) Jan 19, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, January 19, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Gerald Davis, Adjunct Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Thanks to narration, I was able recently to enjoy the film, “Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom,” with my family. Assistive technology for the visually-impaired has arrived at movie theaters, and opened a vista of delight for us. Listening through wireless headphones to a beautifully-voiced narrator setting the scene for the dialogue heard by everyone else, allowed me to keep up with the movie and not disturb others with “What’s going on?” questions. The film studios made a business decision that had a positive moral tone, but it was just what one would do if someone seated at your dinner table needed some help in order to enjoy the meal. It would take only ordinary love. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., like Nelson Mandela, encouraged us to use ordinary love outside our comfortable circumstances. On this Sunday, when we celebrate the birth of Dr. King and a day of commitment to the love that embraces, I would like us to think about how far ordinary love goes. Is there a limit? If so, what are the circumstances? Dr. King titled his book, Strength to Love alerting us to the task before us. Everyone may be included in God’s love, but can you act out that love to just anyone? Without making lists, come prepared to wrestle with the challenges of Ordinary Love. 'Was It All a Dream?' - (Carol Thomas Cissel) Jan 19, 2014

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, January 19, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carol Thomas Cissel, Resident Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Over four decades ago we heard a voice that made our hearts lurch forward. A voice that captivated and energized a nation. A voice that made us believe change can, must, and will happen. Together, with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we dreamed of making a difference. But have we? Did we? Can we? Or, was it all a dream?
