'How the Caged Bird Sang' - (Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar) Jun 22, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, June 22, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Our Summer Sermon Series on Heroes, Heroines, and Heretics continues with a look at the inspiring life of Maya Angelou. Dr. Angelou grew up through the era of lynching and segregation; she was a teenage mom, a one time prostitute, a madam, singer, street car conductor, actress, professor, poet and so much more. She rose from humble means and hardship and went on to deliver a poem to her nation at the inauguration of a US president (Bill Clinton) and to befriend some of the 20th centuries most colorful and important figures. In one interview toward the end of her life she said, “Courage is the most important virtue, because you need courage to live out all the other virtues consistently.” Her life is possibly her most inspiring work. If your summer could use a little lyrical beauty and encouraging uplift, then join me for this message. Jane Addams - Rev. Tamara Lebak (Contemporary) Jun 15, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, June 15, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Associate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION For our summer sermon series, 'Heroes, Heroines, and Heretics,' I will look at the life of Jane Addams, co-founder of one of the first settlements in the United States, the Hull House in Chicago, Illinois. One of my favorite papers written in seminary was on Jane Addams. Many of her letters are archived at the University of Chicago, and I spent hours pouring over them, trying to decide if we could count her as a Unitarian and as a member of the LGBT community. Jane was ahead of her time. She was named a co-winner of the 1931 Nobel Peace Prize. She is considered the mother of the Social Work movement, and is a key leader of women’s suffrage. Jane led a multicultural community at Hull House, crossing boundaries where others dared not tread, working with immigrants, the uneducated, the sick, and the poor. She lived out her faith in the world through action. Jane Addams was also gay. In my studies I have had professors argue with me that this was not a term she would claim. It was, in fact, a different time. But, I have read the love letters between Mary Rozet Smith and Jane, and they are enough to make you blush. These are not the words of roommates or friends. Join me as I explore the life of a heroine and a heretic, Jane Addams. 'Having Dreams' - (Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar) Jun 01, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, June 1, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION A new crop of graduates are setting off on the next stage of their lives this summer. Most likely their heads are filled with dreams and visions of what their futures might look like. At least, we hope they have some dreams. How about for the rest of us? What has happened to your dreams? Have they come true? Have they been lost? In the movie The Graduate, there is a character, Mrs. Robinson, who has lost her dreams and lost interest in life and so she escapes into having sexual affairs with young men who are half her age and who she barely knows. When we stop dreaming, our hearts begin to die and our souls begin to dry out. In contrast, there are dreamers in life whose lives seem filled with passion and hope and possibility. As we congratulate our graduates on Sunday at 10 and 11:30, let us talk about having dreams and not having dreams and what that means. All graduates of all ages, high school and above, will be honored in our services. 'Remember the Fallen' - (Rev. Tamara Lebak) May 25, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, May 25, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Associate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION This Memorial Day we are called to remember those who have died in service of our country. This year will mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the ‘War to end All Wars.” Military casualties are not a thing of the past. The Washington Post has dedicated a website to photographs of Americans who have died as a result of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation New Dawn, and Operation Enduring Freedom. There are nearly 7,000 faces. Of those fatalities, 129 were Oklahomans. They are mostly men, but not all. They are mostly between the ages of 20-24. More than 5,000 died in the midst of hostile action or IED (Improvised Explosive Devices). These are our neighbors, our family members ,our friends. No matter your stance on our involvement, these lives deserve to be honored for their sacrifice. Join me this Sunday as we remember the fallen. 'The Original Lie' - (Rev. Marlin Lavanhar) May 18, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, May 18, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION We all live with certain assumptions about what is true that we later discover is not true. When the premise of one’s religion or life or marriage or anything is a lie, it effects everything else that flows from that original untruth. Interestingly, a person, church or situation can have complete integrity within the context of a foundational error. However, such integrity is based on a fundamental mistruth. For example, if a person believes about himself, “I am dumb,” this shapes his reality profoundly even if it is not true. If a person believes, “the poor will always be with us” or “people who suffer deserve it” or “we create our own reality” then those core ideas will influence our decisions and lives whether they are true or not. In this way, we are all living in a trance of some sort. When the person who thought he was dumb, realizes it’s not true, it is as if a trance or spell has been broken. It is the same with false religious beliefs and many other aspects of our incredibly complex and amazing lives. 'Autoimmune Religion' - (Randy Lewis) May 18, 2014
    Show notes

The reflection was delivered on Sunday, May 18, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Randy Lewis, Adjunct Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Like an autoimmune disease, which forces the immune system to attack its own body, intolerance, separatism, and egocentrism threaten to undo our society today. Historically, however, this is not a new development. Rarely did any civilization manage to maintain peace and harmony for any prolonged amount of time. Let us examine the role that religion has played, and could play, on the stage of the ever-unfolding human drama. The sermon was delivered on Sunday, May 11, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Bring a flower, bring your mother, your memories, and your children as we celebrate our annual Mother’s Day “flower communion.” In this tradition from our church in 1930’s Czechoslovakia, we each bring a flower to add to the central bouquet and take the flower brought by someone else home with us. 'Live and Let Die' - (Rev. Barbara Prose) May 04, 2014
    Show notes

The reflection was delivered on Sunday, May 4, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Assistant Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Forty-five years ago we didn’t have living wills, health care powers of attorney, DNRs, laws defining death, or 911! In one extended generation we have shifted from a society in which natural death was the norm, to a society in which most of us will die as the result of a decision: an antibiotic refused, a feeding tube disconnected, or a respirator turned off. Since our deaths are often the result of a decision, we must talk openly about when it is okay to die. Neither the right to die nor the right to live is absolute. Currently, our lawyers and our priests are the loudest voices in this conversation, but we are the ones who will face these choices for our loved ones and for ourselves. I hope you’ll join our congregation’s conversation about a healthy desire to die a good death. Can death be merciful? Let’s talk about it!
