'Ends that Connect' - (Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar) Oct 12, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 12, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Some endings create a separation and some connect us. When a person stops thinking he is unlovable, he begins to experience love. When our self-centeredness or self-hatred die, we begin to blossom. When we stop thinking we are our job title or family role or our body or the best or worst thing we’ve ever done, we start discovering who we really are. When we enter a relationship or join an organization there are some freedoms we must give up, but in return we receive many rewards that we could never have had without making the sacrifices required. Some people never learn how entering a commitment or covenant or relationship both limits us and expands our possibilities. To fail to learn and live this core truth is to fail one of the fundamentals of life and love. When we learn to celebrate, rather than resist the endings that connect us, we come more fully alive. 'Everything Ends' - (Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar) Oct 05, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 5, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION In October we launch a new sermon series on the topic of ENDINGS. Poet T.S. Eliot wrote: “What we call a beginning is often an end and to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from.” The end of one season is the beginning of a new one. Life is filled with endings, losses, deaths and rebirths. How we deal with the end of one thing is inextricably tied to the beginning of the next. In October we will look at the relationship between endings and new beginnings. 'THIRST ... for Justice' - (Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar & Rev. Barbara Prose) Sep 28, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 28, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister, and Rev. Barbara Prose, Assistant Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION We’re often amazed by childrens’ intense thirst for justice. Recently, I was watching a brother and sister playing mancala. When the girl dropped an extra stone into her pile, her brother caught her wrist and made her drop it back in its proper place. “Mom, she’s cheating!” came an indignant cry, without hesitation or apology. By the time mom came over to intervene, brother and sister were back at the game and there was no need for an explanation about right and wrong. Life is definitely more complicated than a game of mancala! Having spent just one week eating (mostly) only the food we could afford on SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program,) or only $4.28 per day, we are eager to share with you how we fared and what we learned. We invite you to join us this Sunday to hear how we not only thirst, but also hunger, not just for food, but also for justice! Each of us brought something different to this experience and each took something very different away. 'THIRST ... for Wholeness' - (Bishop Carlton Pearson) Sep 21, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 21, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton Pearson, Guest Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Separation theology leads to separation psychology which leads to separation sociality, leading to separation cosmology and finally separation pathology. When we awaken to who we really are as a species and our innate and inextricable connection to one another, all senses of fear, intimidation and the illusion of separation disappears. Awakening is the key to a new age of peace, unity and community! 'THIRST ... for Meaning' - (Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar) Sep 14, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 14, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION The thirst continues as we go to part two of our September sermon series. The thirst for meaning is one of the deepest human longings. It's been said that "religion exist as a response to the fact that human beings are conscious that we are alive and that we are going to die." No other creatures seem to wonder or be confused about their purpose or what they are meant to do. Humans however find ourselves in the uncomfortable and exhilarating questions of why we are here and how we came to be and what all that means about our purpose and possibilities. Many religions would claim to provide a definitive answer to these enigmas, but here at All Souls we have a very different approach. Invite your friends and colleagues as we explore this human thirst for meaning in ways that are unencumbered by religious dogmas. Here we do not want doctrines, superstitions or taboos to restrict our exploration of what is real. 'THIRST ... for Community' - (Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar) Sep 07, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 7, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Our September sermon series will be on “Thirst”. Everyone has a thirst or longing for something. We thirst for community, for meaning, for justice, for love. We can feel at times like we are in a lifeboat in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by water but with nothing to drink. Sometimes we can be surrounded by people but still be thirsty for community. Our lives can be full and successful and still feel devoid of meaning and purpose. We can also mistake our thirst for something superficial and therefore quench it with the wrong drink. We can desire peace, but try to quench it with numbness. We can yearn for love and mistake it as a desire for sex. On Sept. 7th we will launch the series and a new church year on what we are calling “Vision Sunday” with wonderful music, lunch and more for all ages. Then on Sept. 14 we will re-launch The Point our service that has been increasingly referred to as our “Good Without God” or “Humanist” service in Emerson Hall each Sunday 11:30-12:15 with outstanding music from Rick Fortner and friends. On Sept 21st Bishop Carlton Pearson will deliver our message in the 11:30 Contemporary service and on Sept 28th Rev. Barbara Prose and I will speak on our experience of the SNAP Challenge (living for a week on a “food-stamp” budget of $4.28 a day) in all three services. May your thirsts be nurtured and quenched at All Souls this September! 'Keeping the Good in Goodbye' - (Randy Lewis) Aug 31, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, August 31, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Randy Lewis, Community Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Letting go can be very difficult at times, and goodbyes can be rather painful, especially when hearts are broken. Although letting go is a necessary part of life, when done well, it can bring the needed affirmation and completion. This Sunday we will examine ways of keeping the good in goodbyes.
