'Coming Together: at Home' - (David Ruffin) Nov 23, 2014
    Show notes

The homily was delivered on Sunday, November 23, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by David Ruffin, Resident Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION On Sunday, November 23rd, All Souls will have one combined service at 10:30 AM with music from many of our different choirs (Children’s, Youth, Cherubs, New Dimensions and the Adult Choirs will all participate). Children are asked to bring fruits or vegetables to add to our cornucopia in the front of the sanctuary. All of the food will be donated to those in need in our city. Our ministers have been working on a special way to celebrate this national holiday. It will be the first time on a Sunday morning that we are inviting our members from all three of the distinct Sunday services to join together in a single celebration. On this holiday when we lift up the story of people coming together across cultures and differences in the past, we will create a living example of such unity and what it means to us in the present. We will be offering a traditional Hungarian Unitarian communion service in the small chapel following the main service. 'What You Appreciate, Appreciates' - (Bishop Carlton D. Pearson) Nov 16, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, November 16, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Guest Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION To appreciate means to recognize the full worth of something and to be grateful for it. When something appreciates, it rises in value or price. Appreciation and thanksgiving connect directly to forgiveness and are not just a reactionary emotions; they are causative energies. They are effective keys by which anyone may “meet life as a powerful conqueror, not a victim of, but a victor over circumstances.” Appreciation clears mental patterns that cause disease, or dis-ease. One of the main hindrances to healing and wholeness is unforgiveness, not just of others but of yourself. The mental patterns that cause most dis-ease in the body are criticism, anger, resentment, guilt, and unforgiveness. Forgiveness empowers the forgiver and takes his or her power back from the the cause and substitutes it with the cure of forgiveness. The main key to forgiveness is gratefulness in, more than for, all things! The sermon was delivered on Sunday, November 16, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION There are four ways that we give of ourselves that deeply impact the quality of our lives and relationships. We don’t do it for our own benefit necessarily, but this kind of generosity of heart and soul is something that gives back even as it gives away. 'Forgiveness According to Jesus' - (Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar) Nov 09, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, November 9, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Stephen Mitchell in his book "The Gospel According to Jesus" distills all four Christian gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) into one unified gospel. In doing so, he makes the case that essentially Jesus was teaching two things: Love and Forgiveness. In the Contemporary Service this Sunday I will lift up what of real value and usefulness we can learn about forgiveness from Jesus. 'Where Is Justice in Forgiveness?' - (Rev. Gerald Davis) Nov 09, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, November 9, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Gerald Davis, Affiliate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Ever so often, when you hear "forgive and forget," do you want to shout, "Where's justice?" Is forgiveness so easy that we ignore the consequences of the wrong and just forge ahead? If you have ever really tried to forgive, you know that forgiveness is work. But it is a beautiful work that evokes discovery. From evocation can come an invocation of the Divine to allow us to find what we must have in order to forgive. I look forward to our time together. 'What If... No One Forgave?' - Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Contemporary Service) Nov 02, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, November 2, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION When we forgive we free ourselves. When we have a shift in our heart around the harm someone has done to us, or that we have done to another, that shift is liberating. One of my favorite quotes on the subject has been: Forgiveness is “letting go of the hope of a better yesterday.” It is about finding a way to release ourselves from the bondage of a wrongdoing so that we can be open to this day and to the future rather than remaining trapped by the past. It is easier said than done, but it is possible. Our theme for the month of November is “Forgiveness.” Learning to forgive is one the greatest gifts we can give to ourselves. 'End It!' - (Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar) Oct 26, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 26, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION The End is Near! At least the end of our sermon series on Endings and New Beginnings is coming Oct. 26th. It has been one of the most rich series we have done in a long time. In this concluding message I will explore some of the factors that keep us from ending things that we know need to stop. It is common to maintain habits, jobs, relationships, and affiliations long past their usefulness and value. We sometimes do so at the expense of our wellbeing, at the expense of the wellbeing of the people around us and the organizations we support. Why is it so hard sometimes to end the things that hurt us? 'Breaking Away' - (Rev. Barbara Prose) Oct 19, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 19, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Assistant Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION In the Gospel of Luke, chapter 14, verses 25-27, it is written, “Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to then, ‘If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple’.” But, there are times in our lives when we need to break away. There are stories that have been imposed upon us by our families, schools, and faith traditions that do not reflect the truth of the Spirit within us now. A Spirit which calls us toward a deeper freedom and the possibility of a greater love. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t broken away from my family in fundamental ways. Let’s explore what this passage has to tell us about the times we need to break away.
