'The Three Agreements' - (Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar) Aug 24, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, August 24, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION As I reread the book by Don Miguel Ruiz, “The Four Agreements: the Practical Guide to Personal Freedom,” I was reminded that here at All Souls we have three agreements. What does it mean to “dwell together in peace, to seek the truth in love and to help one another?” That is the covenant that we say each week. At All Souls we have agreed to be connected by a promise we make to each other rather than by agreeing to a common creed or doctrine. In doing so we have created a “practical religion guided by freedom.” Join me as I explore our “Three Agreements.” SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/all-souls-unitarian-church/id193096943 VIEW ON YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/AllSoulsUnitarian?feature=mhee SUBSCRIBE TO WATCH OTHER VIDEOS: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=allsoulsunitarian GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: http://www.allsoulschurch.org/make-a-donation1 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/allsoulstulsa Twitter: https://twitter.com/AllSoulsTulsa All Souls Church Website: http://www.allsoulschurch.org

'Teachers Everywhere' - (Rev. Barbara Prose) Aug 17, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, August 17, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Assistant Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Recently, I asked a friend if she would teach me how to do flip turns in the pool. She gave me some great tips on how to create momentum with my head and my feet, and how to position and use my arms to keep the momentum going. Yet despite her kindness, skill, and patience, I couldn’t seem to stay straight or flip fast. Some say, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” Others say, “It’s never too late to learn.” Gregory of Nyssa, the 4th century Christian mystic said the perfection of the spiritual journey is precisely that it is never finished. I say we belong to religious communities in part because it is where we can continue to teach and learn and grow, no matter what, until the very end. As our community’s children return to school, and we anticipate the beginning of the church year together, I look forward to exploring the sacred nature of the teacher-student relationship and how our congregations can be classrooms for the soul. 'Facing Change?' - Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Contemporary Service) Aug 10, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, August 10, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION America is facing change, you are facing change, and religions are facing change. It’s a truism that “the only thing that’s constant is change.” Yet, it is frequently stated “People hate change!” Well that’s a cruel joke, to be alive in a world of unceasing change and have a disposition that desires stability. How do we keep faith in life, one another and ourselves during times of transition? What can we count on when everything around us seems to be moving? The answers include essential keys to living a positive, effective and successful life. In our ever-changing world it’s important to know in what we can place our deepest trust. 'The Courage to Be' - (Rev. Tamara Lebak) Aug 03, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, August 3, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Associate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION The crucifixion story leaves us with one of the most powerful tools of courage that I can imagine. In the midst of betrayal, in the darkness, in the middle of the day, confronted with doubt and meaninglessness, Jesus has the courage to cry out what was on his heart “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” Jesus addresses the very God he has issue with, an argument for a connection even in what appears to be separation. There is a vulnerability that coexists with any true act of courage. Before we can do so with clarity we must also have the courage to look into ourselves. We would all like to be brave in the face of difficulty, in the face of our greatest fears. Join me as I explore what it means to have the courage to be. 'Desire As a Moral Compass' - (Rev. Tet Gallardo) Jul 20, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, July 20, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tet Gallardo, Minister of the UU Bicutan Metro Manila, Philippines. SERMON DESCRIPTION In the 1960s, in the Philippines, the Rev. Toribio Quimada discovered our newly merged Unitarian Universalist faith. He, who had helped farmers gain land titles, whose house was burned, whose family barely escaped, who was killed by unknown assassins, was a true 20th century religious martyr. And he was deeply moved and inspired by our faith’s commitment and call to justice. His daughter is the anchor for 27 congregations across the Philippines today. Only 4 years ago, a dissident, Carlos Celdran, a UU supporter, was charged with an archaic Spanish era law about “offending religious feelings.” His crime? He protested against the Catholic lobby prohibiting women from receiving information about their reproductive health. His case is currently in the Philippine Supreme Court. Our faith is alive in the Philippines, a country of diverse people, often divided, but always strong in their desire for freedom. Come and hear about these very relevant heroes of our shared tradition. 'Bring Your Own God: The Spirituality of Woody Guthrie' - (Rev. Stephen Edington) Jul 13, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, July 13, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Stephen Edington, Guest Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION From his early years in Okema, OK, and Pampa, TX, to his life in New York and service in the Merchant Marine, to his cross-country wanderings, Woody Guthrie cultivated a universal type of religious consciousness that shows through in his work in many ways. The book and sermon also deal with Woody’s tragic struggle with Huntington’s Disease and the spiritual resources he drew upon at that point in his life. About the Author: Rev. Steve Edington is a UU minister residing in Nashua, New Hampshire where he served the UU Church of Nashua for 24 years. He is presently the interim minister of the Unitarian Church of Montpelier, Vermont. Steve is also the author of The Beat Face of God—The Beat Generation Writers as Spirit Guides, and Troubadour and Poet—The Magical Ministry of Ric Masten. He is on the Lowell Celebrates Kerouac Committee of Lowell, Massachusetts which puts on an annual Jack Kerouac Festival there. For the past two years he has been a program presenter at the Woody Guthrie Festival in Okemah. 'A Climate for Change' - (Rev. Barbara Prose) Jul 06, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, July 6, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Assistant Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION When a park ranger left Jane Goodall in the bush of Tanzania to find and study chimpanzees, he, like many others, thought she would last only a few weeks. British authorities were horrified, and the public considered the project to be dangerous if not amoral. When the Texas Tech climatologist, Katharine Hayhoe, talks today about how her study of climate science doesn’t threaten, but instead strengthens her conservative Christian faith, many consider her work to be dangerous if not amoral. These two faithful scientists and scientific people of faith are my guides as I seek new ways to respond to the public panic and expanding debate about religious responses to global climate change. Join me this Sunday to explore the lives and work of these two heretical woman, who both bring science and religion together in their lives and in their work. Don’t forget to think about who your own environmental hero or heroine is, and why. 'Dorothea Dix' - (Randy Lewis) Jun 29, 2014
    Show notes

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, June 29, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Randy Lewis, Adjunct Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Henry David Thoreau once said, “There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root.” In the continuation of the summer sermon series Heroes, Heroines, and Heretics, we will examine the life of Dorothea Dix. Dorothea was one such person that dared to stand up against injustice in a time when few women were able to influence social change. She became impassioned at the plight of those whom society had deemed mentally insane. Many of these individuals were often abused and institutionalized in deplorable and demeaning conditions. Dorothea fought on their behalf. Her life is an example of what one committed person can do to affect change in the lives of others.
