Singing the Song of Songs Feb 09, 2021
    Show notes

"For millennia, we as the Church have cultivated, amplified and internalized a culture of purity instead of holiness that has left women shamed and blamed, subjugated and closeted. This must be said … and we must look at what restorative justice looks like in the face of millennia of the Church literally appropriating the voice of God to tell God's beloved children they are less than and shameful. We cannot just acknowledge briefly and move on, because as Representative Alexandria Occasio-Cortez said this week: "What they are asking for when they say 'Can we just move on' … what they are asking is 'Can we just forget this happened so I can do it again without recourse?'" What we need is a revolution. A revolution of love that overturns the tables of purity and invites us to embrace the holiness of our bodies, the holiness of our longings and desires, the holiness that does not isolate but brings us together in love."

Sermon by Mike Kinman from virtual worship at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, February 7, 2021 at All Saints Church, Pasadena. Love Divine Does Not Coerce Feb 09, 2021
    Show notes

"The epiphany of God's love in the Song of Songs and in the life of Jesus is a love, both human and divine, that does not coerce. Our bodies are the epicenters of sensuality and holy joy to be cherished and shared —if we so choose."

Loving Even Those Who Are Really Hard for Us to Love Feb 09, 2021
    Show notes

"The longtime Rabbi-in-residence of All Saints Church, Reverend Regas's partner and friend, Rabbi Leonard Beerman, of blessed memory, said it this way: 'Yes, there are always enemies of hope all around us, and in us. But there are also allies everywhere. There is a lot of love out there. There is, in truth, in every one of us, a coercion to love.' Feel it. Feel it. It cannot be stifled. Amen."

    A Vision of Tomorrow Jan 26, 2021
    Show notes

"It is good and right and necessary for us to pause in this moment and breathe … and let this vision of tomorrow wash over us and flow through us. To let it strengthen our weary bones and calm our anxious hearts. And … we need to remember that though it is good and right that we rest for a time, that dreams do not become reality by themselves. Because Amanda did not stop there. Because it is not enough to have the vision. It is not enough to say I have a dream. We have been here before. We have to wake up, and with that vision on our hearts, tell the whole story and then write a new one."

Sermon by Mike Kinman from virtual worship at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, January 24, 2021 at All Saints Church, Pasadena. La Suegra de Simón / Simon's Mother-in-Law Jan 26, 2021
    Show notes

"This brief Gospel reading is a Master Class in how the world and the church have treated women to this very day. Stripped of her name. Identified only by her relationship to a man. Used as a prop in a story told about a man, by men and for men. And when it is all done, simply noted that she got back to work."

"Esta breve lectura del Evangelio es una clase magistral en la forma en que el mundo y la iglesia han tratado a las mujeres hasta el día de hoy. Despojándolas de su nombre. Identificadas sólo por su relación con un hombre. Usadas como soporte en una historia contada sobre un hombre, por los hombres y para los hombres. Y cuando todo está hecho, simplemente señaló que ella volvió al trabajo."

Love Your Enemies Jan 26, 2021
    Show notes

"Now it's interesting when it says 'Love your enemies' in the text that 'love your enemy' is not necessarily excusing them. It does acknowledge that there are enemies. There are those who shall oppose us in such a way that we feel as though we must go to war. And another piece about this text that is interesting to me is the way in which -- because I said earlier it says 'love your enemies' and then it says 'turn the other cheek' -- that's in there too, and oftentimes is used as a way to justify women being subjected to the arbitrary violence of men, workers to be subjected to certain kinds of abuse, as though that articulates some deep form of Christian authenticity. But the great Walter Wink reminds us in his book "Jesus as a Human," he reminds us that in that era if you slapped someone who you considered an underling you would use your backhand. And so if you turned your other cheek that meant someone had to slap you with an open hand, and that was a sign that you were their peer."

Sermon by Osagyefo Sekou from virtual worship at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, January 17, 2021 at All Saints Church, Pasadena.
