Recuerda que fuiste un esclavo / Remember that You Were a Slave Jun 30, 2021
    Show notes

"Even as a church, we live in the fear that the slave system generates. As a church, we have become a provider of religious goods and services … and we fear not producing enough because we fear people leaving and taking their pledges with them. It is not the model of a faithful church, it is a business model that sees the highest goods not as human thriving but of numerical growth and the unholy trinity of attendance, buildings and cash. And God is looking at us. And God is not saying "Remember that you were a slave." God is saying, "You have become a slave." You have returned to the bondage from which I rescued you."

Sermon by Mike Kinman for Virtual Bilingual Spanish/English Worship at All Saints Church, Pasadena at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 18, 2021. Readings: Deuteronomio 5:11–22, Salmo 78:1–7, Romanos 13:8–10 y San Matteo 22:22–33. To Love and to Cherish … Until We Are Parted by Death Jun 30, 2021
    Show notes

"What if in every relationship in our lives, we recognized that we are bound together by sacred vows. That we would not embrace each other more if we are doing better, or richer or healthier and we would not discard each other when things got worse, or we lost everything, or became sick. What if every person we encountered, every relationship we had, we looked at the other and said "I will love and cherish you, until we are parted by death." It sounds both wonderful and impossible. It sounds life-giving and, frankly, more than a little exhausting … until I remember that what this would mean is not only me having to care for every person this way … but every single person caring for me this way, too."

Sermon by Mike Kinman from virtual worship at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, April 18, 2021 at All Saints Church, Pasadena. Readings: Deuteronomy 5:11–22, Psalm 78:1–7, Romans 13:8–10 and Matthew 22:22–33. Watch the sermon on YouTube at https://youtu.be/Ex6ywfS3ZxE.

Why Do You Weep? Jun 30, 2021
    Show notes

"Easter is meaningless without its context. And its context is our lives … not just the life we let people see but the life we try to hide. Its context is what we carry … who we carry on our heart day after day after day.

And so, before we rejoice. Before we go and tell Before we can be healed

We have to pass by the angels. We have to pass by Jesus.

Before we can rejoice, Before we can go and tell Before we can be healed, we have to answer the question Why. Do. You. Weep?"

    Forgive Them Jun 30, 2021
    Show notes

"If forgiveness truly is nothing but the empty shell that demands everything of the victim but nothing of the perpetrator. If forgiveness truly is nothing but the swallowing of the pain and the suppressing of the truth, then it is certainly worthy of discarding. And yet, if we take forgiveness away from justice, all that is left is vengeance. And more and more, that is the choice that is set before us. Forgiveness without accountability …or vengeance without grace. And each is soul-killing in its dehumanization for victim and perpetrator; for judge, jury and accused. And so, we return to that core question of the cross … what would Jesus do … and in fact what is Jesus doing when he says these words? What is the justice of God? It cannot be either option. For the justice of God, the way of the cross, is not mimicking the cross in either its suppression of truth through fear …or vengeance which we anoint ourselves to execute on God's behalf. The justice of God, the holiness of God demands both accountability and mercy, reparation and forgiveness."

Save Us from the Sin of Loving Religion Instead of Jesus Jun 30, 2021
    Show notes

"Loving religion instead of Jesus has been one of the ways the church has denied Jesus over and over and over again as surely as Peter denied Jesus in the courtyard of the high priest as the cock crowed the third time ... and in this time of COVID-19 we have instead chosen to re-imagine religion because of Jesus."
