Choose This Day: Who Shall We Be? Jan 21, 2021
    Show notes

"The 'othering' of human siblings is as old as the prophets and as new as whatever social media platform they're cooking up to replace Twitter. It is s arguably an 'original sin' — if we understand sin as that which separates us from God as the Source of love who calls us to 'choose this day'to love our neighbors as ourselves. And we must choose love."

The light shines in the bleakness, and the bleakness did not overtake it/Esta luz brilla en las tinieblas, y las tinieblas no han podido apagarla Jan 21, 2021
    Show notes

"The light shines in the bleakness, and the bleakness did not overtake it. There are no right words to make it better. There is no practice, medication or maxim that will bring us back what we have lost. There is no practice, medication or maxim that will bring us back what we have lost. There is no timetable for grief except that which emerges from the one who is grieving. There is only the light of Christ … in each of us and on each of us. And the promise that even though we each will die, the light never will.

In the Beginning Jan 21, 2021
    Show notes

"There are powers beyond our comprehension and manipulation. Powers that meet us in our moments of greatest vulnerability. Powers that we are facing this morning as we bid farewell to George and begin to face a life without his presence here on earth. There are powers beyond our comprehension and manipulation … and our response to those powers is to try to trust in them, to be humbled by them and … to bare our hearts and souls to them – crying out that which is our deepest pain and desire. Not because we believe God and these powers can be lobbied … but because we are trying to trust that whatever happens, the God who was in the beginning is with us still. Because we are trying to trust that, whatever happens, the love that is God is the most powerful force for healing in the universe. Because we are trying to trust that, whatever happens, even death cannot separate us from one another because are always joined together under that infinite canopy of stars, sheltered in the hollow of God's hand."

Sermon by Mike Kinman from the virtual worship at All Saints Church, Pasadena, at 11:15 a.m. on Healing Sunday, January 3, 2021. It's a Journey … that I Propose Jan 21, 2021

"We know that nothing magical will happen at midnight when 2020 clicks over to 2021. We will still be deep in this pandemic. We will still be a nation of liberty for some but not for all. We will still carry the griefs on our heart from all those we have lost this year and the fear for those who lie dying even as we gather in our homes this night to watch … and wait … and hope. And yet as we watch and wait for midnight and the chance finally to put 2020 behind us, it is Hope that is the real watchword of this night. Because we are people of hope."

A Child Is Born. The Angels Sing. Jan 21, 2021
    Show notes

"And the Grinch, with his grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow, Stands puzzling and puzzling: "How could it be so?

"It came in our loneliness. It came in our dread.

"It came as too many are dying in bed.

"It came without hugs. Without the timpani's boom.

"It came socially distant, home watching on Zoom.

"The child is still born, the angels still bring.

"Good news of great joy, and so we still sing.

"We sing and the mighty are thrown from their seat.

"We sing and the hungry have plenty to eat.

"We sing in defiance. We sing loud and strong.

"We sing for in Christ all will always belong.

"We sing as the child first opens his eyes.
