Enlisting in the Army at the age of 22, Will Robinson had no idea how impactful of an experience it would be. Although honored and proud to serve his country, he returned 5 years later a broken man. Mentally, physically, and emotionally, the next 12 years of his life would be a stumbling progression of surgeries and therapy, with the constant companions of depression and anxiety.

That is until one day while flipping through channels, he saw the movie, Wild. Two weeks later, Will was at the southern terminus of the PCT.

The rest is well, now history. Will finished his last step of the Triple Crown just over a week ago, becoming the first African American man to complete the journey.

Ep. 572: The Adventure of Fly Fishing - Jon Hogins Sep 19, 2019
    Show notes

Fly Fishing: Jon on California Roots to Texas Adaptation – Epic Father-Son Mountain and National Park Adventures, Minimalist Skill for Backpacking, Horseback Riding, Hiking, Mountain Biking, Adding Fresh Fish to Any Outdoor Trip. Growing up in California, Jon was taken on epic adventures by his father into the local mountains and national parks where the opportunity to fly fish was abundant. Later in life, however, Jon found himself in the much warmer Texas landscape where he had to adjust his skills to continue pursuing the sport.

Fly fishing is the perfect minimalistic complementary skill to so many other adventure sports; backpacking, horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, etc. It doesn't take much to throw a small rod and a few flies in with your gear and have some fresh fish on your adventure.

Ep. 570: Paddling the Nile River - Sarah Davis Sep 12, 2019
    Show notes

Paddling: Sarah Paddles Entire Nile River – First Woman to Complete Longest River in World, Overcoming Fear, Banking Career to Epic Adventure, Putting One Paddle in Front of the Other.

Sarah has always been involved in sports and has always loved adventure. She credits her mother for that. As a child she would pour through her mother’s photo albums of faraway places, hoping to one day go herself.

After years of working in the world of banking and traveling to over 40 countries, Sarah was thumbing through adventures that have never been completed when she realized no woman had ever paddled the entire Nile River, the longest river in the world.

She immediately began planning what that would look like to attempt. She was overwhelmed with fear and worry, but that didn’t stop her.

Today, we’re listening to her story of paddling the entire Nile River and what it means to put one food (or paddle) in front of the other, even when your comfort zone is nowhere in sight.

    Ep. 569: Canoeing 1,000 Miles Through Canada’s Tundra - Stephan Kesting Sep 09, 2019
    Show notes

Canoeing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Stephan Kesting's 42-Day 1000-Mile Solo Canoe Trip – Northern Canada Boreal Forest to Hudson Bay Tundra, Self-Supported with All Supplies, Post-Kidney Transplant Recovery, 50km Mountain Endurance Hike 6 Months After Transplant, National Medal of Bravery Firefighter, Grapplearts BJJ Videos and Instructionals.

Stephan Kesting is probably best known for the huge number of Brazilian jiu-jitsu videos he has on Youtube, the martial arts training articles he’s written for Grapplearts.com, and his instructional videos which people consume in app form, online streaming form, and DVD form.

What’s not as well known is that he’s also a full-time firefighter who received the national medal of bravery for helping save two trapped firefighters from a collapse in a burning warehouse.

He’s also been an avid outdoorsman for decades. For example, in 2015 he was dying of kidney failure due to a genetic condition. A kidney transplant saved his life and 6 months later he completed a 50 km mountain endurance hike with 2,600 meters of vertical climb and descent in the snow in a single day.

He recently completed a 42 day, 1000 mile canoe trip that took him from the boreal forest of northern Canada to the open barren land tundra, and then down to Hudson bay. He was by himself and carried all his food and supplies with him. It was truly the adventure of a lifetime.

    Enjoy!

Ep. 568: How an Injury and Opportunity Is Leading Thousands to Learn Snowboarding Virtually - Fraser Johnston Sep 06, 2019
    Show notes

Snowboarding: Fraser Johnston Launches Watch and Ride Virtual Lessons – From Injury Insight to Accessible Online Training, Overcoming Stigma and High Costs, Scaling Passion as Snowboard Instructor. When Fraser Johnston injured himself one summer, he realized that if the same injury had happened during the snowboarding season, he’d be in a heap of trouble. As a snowboard instructor, your body’s health is crucial to earning a living since you need to be on a board with your students. He quickly began brainstorming ideas to help scale his knowledge and passion for snowboarding, just in case.

On top of that, Fraser noticed a huge lack of sign-ups in snowboarding lessons compared to skiing. The cultural stigma of snowboards and skyrocketing prices of gear and lift tickets helped fuel the idea of an economical and virtual way for him to make snowboarding more accessible to more people.

He came up with Watch and Ride, a series of virtual lessons from basic to advanced to teach every type of snowboarder new tricks, skills, and the science behind snowboarding to optimally enjoy their time on the mountain. The business has been growing steadily, as well as his skills in marketing, content-creating, and scale. If you have a love for an adventure sport and want to one day turn it into a career, give this episode a listen! You’re bound to learn something from Fraser’s story.

Ep. 566: Climbing the 50 U.S. Highpoints in 50 Days with Type 1 Diabetes - Michael Shelver & Patrick Mertes Sep 02, 2019
    Show notes

Mountaineering, Diabetes: Patrick and Michael Complete Project 50-IN-50 – First T1D Team to Summit All 50 U.S. State High Points in 49 Days, 17,000-Mile Road Trip, 315 Miles Trails Hiked, Run, Climbed, Skied, Inspiring Global Diabetes Communities. Patrick and Michael have been living with Type 1 Diabetes for most of their lives. Feeling a bit isolated and hesitant as children to venture too far away from available insulin or glucose monitoring tools, they individually pursuit adventurous lives before coming together to show the world anything is possible with T1D through their latest adventure, Project 50-IN-50

They climbed the 50 highpoints of each U.S. state and finished in 49 days – making them the first people with Type 1 diabetes to complete this achievement and joining an elite group of fewer than five people to do so the fastest in the world.

Over the course of the 2019 summer, the team road-tripped over 17,000 miles to hike, run, climb and ski through 315 miles of trails. Patrick is the first person with T1D to successfully summit the highest peak in each of the 50 states. Michael experienced an emergency Life Flight off of Granite Peak in Montana and had to miss out on a handful of the peaks. Thankfully, he’s made a full recovery. After loads of tears and challenges along the way, Patrick and Michael persevered to complete their challenge.

Project 50-IN-50 is an initiative of The Diabetes Family Connection, a North Carolina based 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. In addition to achieving a new milestone in mountaineering, Michael and Patrick have grown local and global communities of people with diabetes inspired to get outside and enjoy the outdoors.

And that is a great thing.

It's not crucial that we all see the light so early in life. What is important is that we eventually find ourselves living and dreaming as adventurers. Scott Newman spends time with Curt re-living his discovery and a new passion for hiking and backpacking on today's show.
