Thirty years of crippling social anxiety will do that to a girl. Adventure became Paula’s personal therapy in 2012 and, ever since, she has terrified herself daily in the name of recovery. So far, it’s working.

Ep. 551: Skiing Self-Supported to the South Pole with Your Husband - Chris Fagan Jul 29, 2019
    Show notes

Ski Expedition, Cycling, Sailing: Chris and Marty Fagan First American Married Couple Unsupported Ski to South Pole – 48-Day Antarctic Coast to Pole Journey, Africa Bike Tours, Alaska Sailboat Racing, Book The Expedition: Two Parents Risk Life and Family in Quest to South Pole. When Chris and Marty Fagan go on an adventure, they go big! From bike tours through Africa to racing sailboats in Alaska, the couple is a dynamic duo of adventurous spirit.

Over the winter of 2013/2014, that spirit culminated in a 48-day ski expedition to the South Pole. Upon completion, they became the first American married couple (and second married couple in history) to complete a full unsupported, unguided, unassisted ski from the Antarctic coast to the South Pole. In fact, they're two of just over 100 people in all of history to have traveled to the South Pole in that way.

Chris is an amazing storyteller, and I hope you enjoy this conversation about two parents risking it all for a chance at an extraordinary adventure.

Chris' book about the trip, The Expedition: Two Parents Risk Life and Family in an Extraordinary Quest to the South Pole, comes out September 3, 2019. You can find it here:

Ep. 550: From Near Death Experience to Adventure Belts - Jen Perry Jul 26, 2019
    Show notes

Adventure Entrepreneurship: Jen Perry Founds Jelt Belts After Near-Death Recovery – Recycled Plastic Elastic Belts Made by Rural Montana Ranch Women and Billings Prison Program, Certified B Corp, 1% for the Planet, Thousands Donated to Global Charities, Business as Force for Good.

    From Jeltbelt.com:

    "If not now, when?"

After surviving a near-death experience and months in the hospital, Jen Perry knew she wanted to do more with her life. In 2014, she founded Jelt as a social enterprise, with the purpose of creating a product that everyone would need, while promoting and encouraging social change.

Functional and socially impactful, Jelt elastic belts are made from recycled plastic bottles and are manufactured in a way that empowers women. Jelt belts are produced by women sewers living on rural Montana ranches and are also manufactured at the Women’s Prison in Billings, Montana, via the Montana Correctional Enterprise Program. This privileged program breaks the cycle of incarceration by interviewing, training and paying the women, giving them the skills and confidence needed to live a more productive life when released.

Since its inception, Jelt has become a Certified B Corporation, is active in 1% For The Planet, and has donated thousands of dollars to charities all over the world. Jelt truly uses business as a force for good.

Ep. 549: A 108 Day Journey Along the Spine of Asia Revisited - Oli France Jul 25, 2019

"Midway through a major house renovation and just months from his wedding day, the timing couldn’t have been worse. Yet, in late 2015, Oli France, a hapless kitchen salesman with a history of impromptu adventures, decided to quit his job and begin a unique expedition. His journey began in Hong Kong, and over the next 108 days, he traveled overland, by any means, across eleven countries to reach Istanbul. Along the way, Oli was lost in a land-mined jungle, detained, interrogated and spied upon. He skirted avalanches, frostbite, and severe dehydration as he completed fourteen audacious mountain climbs in mid-winter. Oli celebrated three new year festivals, partied with locals and found forgotten dinosaur footprints in a remote Tajik valley. This is the story of one man’s journey into some of the most scarcely documented corners of Asia, describing the kind heart of humanity and the immense challenges posed by mountains off the beaten track."

Ep. 548: Self-Supported Paddleboarding Adventure in Nepal - Liam Kirkham Jul 22, 2019
    Show notes

Usually, we hear from folks climbing the record-breaking peaks of the Himalayas when we talk about Nepal. However, today is a little different. We’re actually heading downhill and talking about an epic river trip by Liam Kirkham, a veteran guest of the show and a fantastic storyteller. He was previously on episode 344 talking about solo winter kayaking trip through the Grand Canyon.

Liam recently became a father and was trying to combat what so many people tell him, “you’ll have no time for that” or “your priorities will change”. He’s learned that they were half right. As a way to ensure he’d do something epic to kickoff fatherhood, he bought a non-refundable plane ticket to Nepal and let the idea of the journey grow from there.

A few months earlier he had intended to do a paddleboard trip down the River Thames but life had gotten in the way, however, the remnants of a paddleboard trip were still lingering in his mind. He started reading guidebooks and looking at maps for a river that would be suitable. He also began looking for someone to go with him. After several pints of beer with a good friend (with no experience) he convinced him to join. The adventure was on!

Ep. 547: Guiding Adventures in Hostile Places - Oli France Jul 19, 2019
    Show notes

Despite studying outdoor leadership at university and filling his summers with adventure travel, Oli found himself falling into an incredibly boring job as a kitchen salesman. After getting to the point where he couldn’t take it anymore, in the middle of a major house remodel, and months away from getting married, Olie decided to undertake a solo winter journey from Hong Kong to Istanbul along the mountainous spine of Asia. During that adventure, he climbed 14 mountains in the 11 countries he visited and the journey became the basis of his first book, ‘The Trail of the Mountain Folk’.

Since then, he has lead groups on overseas adventures to destinations including Iraq, Somalia, DRC, Sudan, and Turkmenistan. Overall, he’s taken clients to 13 countries in total and 60 countries he’s traveled to personally.

With a keen sense of balance, he has become a specialist in taking in doing personal trips and taking paying clients to hostile environments and situations, like being detained for five days in Uzbekistan, navigating through minefields in Iraq and Laos, avoiding car-bombings in Beirut, being caught in a 6.9 magnitude earthquake, dodging avalanches and frostbite, getting stuck in a militia-run town in the DRC, facing down the barrel of a gun, and being stranded alone without water in a remote desert valley.

There have been so many occasions where he has had to find the resilience to continue, and more latterly, to have good leadership to keep his groups safe.

Could you do this for a living?

Ep. 545: Fulfilling Your Parent's Dream Through Adventure - Tom Knox Jul 15, 2019
    Show notes

Sometimes our adventure is about so much more than our desire to fulfill our dreams. For Tom Knox's parents, driving the length of the US west coast was always something they wanted to do. However, due to cancer and Alzheimer's, that dream remained unfulfilled when they died. In an effort to carry on the adventurous spirit of his parents, Tom decided he would bike the route in remembrance of them and in an effort to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer's. Tom is a normal guy, taking precious PTO in order to make this adventure happen. We caught up with him a few weeks before he left.

Ep. 544: Using Financial Independence to Fuel a Life of Adventure - Chris Mamula Jul 12, 2019
    Show notes

With any adventure, finances have to be part of the planning. That planning can begin months or years before the adventure even begins. Some folks decide to put it all on a credit card. Others knock on the door of hundreds of potential sponsors to pay for their trips while others just decide to suffer immensely on the adventure because of lack of funds (been there, done that).

Doesn't it make more sense to build a frugal and thoughtful lifestyle that allows adventures to be more realistic, more often? Chris Mamula joins us today to talk about some very easy and key steps that anyone can do to help make adventures more possible in their lives.

Chris is an avid adventurer and has achieved financial independence and decided to retire from physical therapy at age 41, giving him years of possible adventures for him and his family.
