Ep. 583: 75 Years Young and Still Adventuring Around the World - Lin Pardey Oct 28, 2019
    Show notes

Sailing: A 47-year, 210,000-mile voyage across 77 countries that began with a chance encounter with a sailor and evolved into a life lived entirely on the water.

When Lin was tired of the “college-types” that she was always surrounded by, she decided to get to know a couple of sailors as an outlet from the mundaneness of campus life. She quickly fell in love with one of the guys, Larry, who was completely different from the folks she spent her days in class with. Lin was eager to learn so he began to teach her how to sail.

Once she was comfortable on the water they began helping other folks deliver their boats around the area and they also began building their own. Not long after, the idea to live full-time on the 29-foot sailing vessel was born.

Fast forward 47 years, 210,000 miles, and 77 countries later and we have Lin now sailing around the world on her own and having written dozens of books about her and Larry’s epic life. Lin has a lot to teach us in today’s episode and I encourage you to check out her many books.

Ep. 581: Kayaking the Amazon from Source to Sea - West Hansen Oct 21, 2019
    Show notes

Kayaking: A Texas water sports enthusiast's transformation into an expedition paddler, tackling the Amazon River, Russia's Volga, and the Arctic's Northwest Passage.

West was born and raised in Texas and found his love of water at an early age. He was heavily involved in the water sports scene in Austin for years, organizing cleanups, races, etc. However, it wasn’t until his first trip out of the county, at the age of 46, that West decided to pursue an enormous expedition, paddle the entire length of the Amazon River.

This led West to organize The 2012 National Geographic Amazon Express Expedition, which was his first expedition. It started at the newly discovered/confirmed source of the Amazon, which added almost 100 miles to the river and after 111 days, they made it to the Atlantic Ocean, 75 miles east of Belem, Brazil.

West is also the first to kayak Europe's longest river 2200 mile Volga River in Russia. In 2020 he and his group will be the first to kayak the entire Northwest Passage - 1,900 miles across the Canadian Arctic Archipelago with the “Arctic Cowboys”.

Ep. 575: Sailing in the Arctic - Brady Trautman and Alex Blue Sep 30, 2019
    Show notes

Sailing: A voyage to Svalbard's iceberg-filled waters just 600 miles from the North Pole, featuring polar bear encounters and navigating treacherous Arctic conditions aboard SV Delos.

We heard from Captain Brian Trautman of SV Delos a while back about sailing around the world. As a way to mix things up, they recently sailed far from their usual tropical landscapes to one of iceberg-filled water of Svalbard, only 600 miles from the North Pole. The experience proved rewarding and overflowing with adventure. We get to hear about everything from their night watching for damaging icebergs as well as their “Day of Magic” that includes an up close encounter with a polar bear.

The other half of the SV Delos crew, Brady Trautman and Alex Blue, are here today to tell about that far north experience. They’re catching up with us during their 6500 nautical miles "Lap of the Northern Atlantic Ocean”.
