    Show notes

Adventure lifestyle: JT's journey from US Air Force veteran and 23-year federal service to discovering the power of habits, hosting the Consequence of Habit Podcast on mental health, success, and environment, and launching a nonprofit to promote building lives on good habits.

JT is an Athletic Brewing Ambassador, a dad to 3, a proud veteran, and host of the Consequence of Habit Podcast. He started his career in the United States Air Force and has spent the last 23 years protecting and serving his country as a civilian federal employee.

After a major crossroad in his life, he began to learn the power of habits, both good and bad. After making the change, he decided to start a podcast to discuss with others how habits can make or break you. Through his podcast, he brings awareness to the impact habits have on our mental health, success, and the environment.

After interviewing so many inspiring guests, he also decided to start a nonprofit, also called Consequence of Habit, to help expand this vision of building a life on good habits in a bigger way.

    Ep. 891: A 10-Year Journey Through Patagonia On Horseback - Revisited - Nancy Pfeiffer Dec 22, 2022
    Show notes

Horseback riding across Patagonia: Nancy's decade-long solo journey as a beginner horsewoman with limited Spanish, covering 3,000 kilometers of rugged trails, embraced by the wild landscape and hardy pioneers, forever changed by the experience, as told in her book Riding Into the Heart of Patagonia.

As a neophyte horsewoman with a minimal command of the Spanish language, Nancy rode off across Patagonia, alone, on horseback. Over the next decade and three thousand kilometers of rugged horse trail, Patagonia’s wild country and the hardy pioneers who settled there took her in and changed her.

She published a book about the experience, Riding Into the Heart of Patagonia. When she is not in Patagonia, she lives in a cabin outside Palmer, Alaska, where she enjoys the luxuries of hauling water, chopping wood, and high-speed Internet.

Wildlife filmmaking: Ben Masters' path from Texas A&M wildlife biology to founding Fin and Fur Films, producing Unbranded (riding wild mustangs Mexico to Canada), authoring two books, writing for National Geographic, and creating Deep in the Heart – a stunning celebration of Texas wilderness, wildlife diversity, conservation, and recovery.

Ben Masters is a filmmaker and writer specializing in wildlife and adventure stories. He is most known for producing Unbranded (Mountainfilm 2015 Audience Award Winner), a coming of age film about riding wild mustangs from Mexico to Canada. Masters studied wildlife biology at Texas A&M University and founded Fin and Fur Films in 2015. He is the author of two books published by Texas A&M University Press and has written for National Geographic and Western Horseman. A proud Texan, Masters loves riding a good horse through new country, filming wildlife stories that haven’t been documented before, and using movies to help conserve wildlife and wild places.

His most recent film, Deep in the Heart, is “a love letter to Texas”. It’s a visually stunning film celebrating the vast diversity of wilderness and wildlife in Texas. The story follows the relationship with the natural world and showcases our ability to destroy, conserve, and recover wildlife and the habitat we mutually depend on.

    Originally aired - August 23, 2019

When Angela was ready for a new chapter in life, she wanted to go big. The PCT, AT, or other thru-hiking trails weren’t enough. She “wanted the world”. With nothing but a wheeled cart and her imagination, she set off on what is truly the adventure of a lifetime, a 5-year walk around the world.

She recently crossed 20,000 miles and is back in the US, on her way home to Bend, Oregon. Also, her 72-year young mother is currently keeping her company via bicycle.

Angela is also walking with the purpose to raise $20,000 to build a safe shelter for girls saved from gender violence and sex trafficking in India.

Ep. 888: The Snowman Race in Bhutan - Nate Bender Dec 13, 2022
    Show notes

Trail running and FKT challenges: Nate's climate activism in Montana, first solo unsupported linkup of Glacier National Park's tallest peaks (150 miles, 60,000 feet ascent over six days), creative route creation, and participation in the elite Snowman Race (126 miles, 17,946-foot passes) to raise climate change awareness as a Protect Our Winters athlete and Footprints Running marketing director.

Nate is a trail runner and climate activist based in Missoula, Montana. His personal and professional focus is to use both his voice as a mountain athlete and skills in marketing & data science to catalyze a climate-friendly world.

He races occasionally, but primarily specializes in fastest known time (FKT) challenges and loves the creative process of dreaming up new linkups. His most recent FKT was the first-known continuous linkup of the tallest peaks in Glacier National Park, Montana; a solo, unsupported six-day effort covering 150 miles and nearly 60k feet of ascent.

Nate holds a master’s degree in Resource Conservation — which focuses on the social science of climate action — and is currently in an additional master’s degree in Business Analytics. He is a member of the Protect Our Winters Athlete Alliance and also works as the Marketing Director for Footprints Running, a nonprofit climate action incubator.

These backgrounds and passions made Nate a perfect candidate for the The Snowman Race, which follows the trail of the famous Snowman Trek, which has been completed by fewer people than Everest. Covering 126 miles (203 kilometers) through the wild and challenging terrains with mountain passes as high as 17,946 feet (5470M) the Snowman Race is an ultra-marathon, challenging the world’s fittest and most elite runners to help raise awareness of the impacts of climate change.

Ep. 887: Nonstop Solo Sail Around the World - Revisited - Jerome Rand Dec 08, 2022
    Show notes

Solo circumnavigation: Jerome's 271-day, 29,000-mile solo sailing voyage around the world on his Westsail 32 Mighty Sparrow from Gloucester, MA, in 2017-2018 – one of the few to complete the feat on such a small vessel after growing up in Northern Michigan, living in the Caribbean, and hiking the Appalachian Trail.

    Originally aired - June 15, 2020

Jerome grew up in Northern Michigan surrounded by water. Reading books about harrowing adventures fueled his mind to live life outside of the box as he grew up. He started his sailing career late, but once he caught the bug, it took off and never stopped.

After living in the Caribbean for years Jerome decided to hike the Appalachian Trail. He admits that it was a blissful time of happiness and fulfillment, but he wanted to do more, and do something on the water.

In October of 2017, Jerome climbed aboard his Westsail 32, Mighty Sparrow, Jerome would circle the globe alone and return to where he started, Gloucester, MA in June of 2018. His incredible adventure has only been completed by a handful of folks in a vessel of that size. The journey spanned 271 days and over 29,000 miles.

Ep. 886: Climbing Volcanoes for Good - Angie Marie Dec 05, 2022
    Show notes

Mountaineering: Angie's 2022 Adventure Fundraiser for The Cairn Project – climbing five Cascade Volcanoes including Mt. Rainier, raising grants for girls' wilderness programs, documenting the journey to make mountaineering more accessible for women, and inspiring deeper potential in mind and body.

Everybody loves a summit selfie. But most people don't get to peer into the infinite behind-the-scenes moments before and after the shutter snaps-- which is where the true magic happens!

In 2022, Angie volunteered for a nonprofit called The Cairn Project to raise grant funding for community organizations that offer wilderness experiences to girls and gender-expansive youth. Her "Adventure Fundraiser" involved climbing five Cascade Volcanoes in Oregon and Washington (including Mt. Rainier), as well as documenting the journey to make mountaineering more accessible to other women.

The values and processes of outdoor journeys compel Angie to dig deeper into what's possible for her mind and body— and her mission is to inspire others to do the same.

Ep. 885: The Sport of Finding Bigfoot, Seriously - Laura Krantz Dec 01, 2022
    Show notes

Bigfoot encounters: Laura Krantz's journey from skeptic to exploring the world of Bigfoot believers after discovering her family tie to researcher Grover Krantz, featuring professors, rangers, police officers, and normal people with strange sightings, documented in her podcast Wild Thing.

“There’s no way Bigfoot could be real...

...at least that’s what I thought.”

Laura Krantz is a self-described skeptic. However, several years ago she read an article about Grover Krantz, an anthropology professor and Bigfoot researcher. She thought it odd they shared last names. After more digging, she was surprised to discover that Grover was a cousin to her grandfather. She had to learn more about this mysterious world of folks who believe in the creature but aren’t “crazy”. What she found was fascinating. These aren’t tin hat-wearing antisocial hermits in the forest. They are professors, teachers, forest rangers, and police officers who all had undeniably strange encounters with a creature that they never thought they’d believe in. Laura, a former NPR producer, documented her journey which she turned into Wild Thing, a podcast about the lore and reality of who or what Bigfoot really is and her quest to know more about the folks who search for it. Enjoy!

Ep. 883: Using Financial Independence to Fuel a Life of Adventure - Revisited - Chris Mamula Nov 24, 2022
    Show notes

Financial independence and adventure: Chris Mamula's path to retiring at 41 from physical therapy, building a frugal lifestyle with simple steps to make adventures more realistic, frequent, and funded without credit cards or heavy sponsorship reliance.

    Episode originally aired - July 12, 2019

With any adventure, finances have to be part of the planning. That planning can begin months or years before the adventure even begins. Some folks decide to put it all on a credit card. Others knock on the door of hundreds of potential sponsors to pay for their trips while others just decide to suffer immensely on the adventure because of lack of funds (been there, done that).

Doesn't it make more sense to build a frugal and thoughtful lifestyle that allows adventures to be more realistic, more often? Chris Mamula joins us today to talk about some very easy and key steps that anyone can do to help make adventures more possible in their lives.

Chris is an avid adventurer and has achieved financial independence and decided to retire from physical therapy at age 41, giving him years of possible adventures for himself and his family.
