Ep. 902: Kayaking The Inside Passage - Chris Whittaker Jan 30, 2023
    Show notes

You may recognize Chris from episode 618, talking about being a full-time adventure guide. He’s back to chat about an epic 72-day sea kayak expedition of the Inside Passage, the 1,200-mile paddle trail from Seattle to Skagway, Alaska.

Chris said it was a logistical nightmare in terms of organization, especially due to covid disruptions. However, it paid off with truly wild animal encounters, humpbacks surfacing feet from their kayaks, being 'bumped' by killer whales, and camping in grizzly bear country.

On top of that, Chris has changed roles from guide to expedition business owner. Not long after coming home from this adventure, he turned around to guide groups to summited Kilimanjaro twice!

Ep. 901: First Woman to Circumnavigate the World on Motorcycle - Revisited - Elspeth Beard Jan 26, 2023
    Show notes

    Originally aired - July 31, 2017

In 1982, at the age of just twenty-three and halfway through her architecture studies, Elspeth Beard left her family and friends in London and set off on a 35,000-mile solo adventure around the world on her 1974 BMW R60/6.

Reeling from a recent breakup and with only limited savings from her pub job, a tent, a few clothes and some tools, all packed on the back of her bike, she was determined to prove herself. She had ridden bikes since her teens and was well traveled. But nothing could prepare her for what lay ahead.

When she returned to London nearly two and a half years later she was stones lighter and decades wiser. She'd ridden through unforgiving landscapes and countries ravaged by war, witnessed civil uprisings that forced her to fake documents, and fended off sexual attacks, biker gangs and corrupt police convinced she was trafficking drugs. She'd survived life-threatening illnesses, personal loss and brutal accidents that had left permanent scars and a black hole in her memory. And she'd fallen in love with two very different men. In an age before email, the internet, mobile phones, sat-navs and, in some parts of the world, readily available and reliable maps, Elspeth achieved something that would still seem remarkable today.

Told with honesty and wit, this is the extraordinary and moving story of a unique and life-changing adventure.

Ep. 900: The American Perimeter Trail - Rue McKenrick Jan 23, 2023
    Show notes

Rue McKenrick is a long-distance backpacker and the Executive Director of The American Perimeter Trail Conference. McKenrick moved to Bend, Oregon in 2010 and continued to hone his skills of climbing, skiing, trail running, and cycling and in 2019, he began the 12,000 mile scouting trek of the route for the American Perimeter Trail. 2 years later on October 8th, 2022, Rue had a triumphant return to Bend, Oregon where he completed the first thru-hike of the APT.
