258 Myofunctional Therapy & Airway during COVID -19 with Sarah Hornsby, RDH, Myofunctional Therapist Dec 16, 2020
    Show notes

Please Leave a Review! Andrew and Michelle had this week's guest on for an entire series on myofunctional therapy earlier this year, and now that 2020 is at long last winding down, she's returned to give an update on the status of all things myo since COVID-19 swept the industry and the world.

Returning guest Sarah K. Hornsby, RDH, is a myofunctional therapist, speaker and mentor. Her interest in myofunctional disorders arose from her own myofunctional problems, inspiring her to ask bigger questions about why these issues are prevalent in today's society. This ultimately led to her launching her own myofunctional therapy practice, Faceology, a decade ago.

In this episode, Sarah explains why having to wear a mask isn't an excuse to mouth-breathe, reveals the surprising benefits of humming, and stresses why you should get to know your own nose.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:

    Interview starts: 17:22

    - Sarah delves into the overarching benefits of having more hygienists speak to their patients about any myofunctional issues.

    - The reason it can be difficult for some patients to grasp the actual mechanics of their own tongues.

    - Confronting a national bad habit: mouth-breathing.

    - One neat trick for building up valuable nitric oxide in your nasal passages.

    - The shifts Sarah has noticed in the educational and industry landscape since the pandemic began.

    - Sarah's big announcement for the future of the Breathe Institute.

    - Why everyone needs to take the initiative to learn about their own nose.

    QUOTES:

"Putting a mask over your mouth-breathing is kind of like, well, shouldn't your nose be doing that?"

"There are so many opportunities for education. I have noticed booming changes in online courses."

"We don't need to fight amongst ourselves. We have bigger battles."

"It's so much easier to read a book, take a course, join a webinar, but the scariest, hardest thing is to see your first patient."

"I don't want people to get into a program that they can't finish."

    Show notes

Please Leave a Review! For this week's A Tale of Two Hygienists, Andrew and Michelle return to an older, disturbing, and very pressing topic: human trafficking, and specifically how the pandemic has created conditions for even worse abuse. They spoke with two previous guests who specialize in this vital subject.

Amber Riley is a dental hygienist based in San Diego, and for nearly two decades she has focused on forensic dentistry in addition to her clinical work. It's through her forensic dentistry focus that she met Dr. Sakher Alqahtani, the head of pediatric dentistry at King Saud University in Saudi Arabia who developed a new forensic tool for estimating age from tooth development.

In this episode, our guests explain how quarantine has enabled abusers and traffickers, discuss how modern culture and media shape young people into targets for abusers, and suggest ways hygienists can help suspected victims.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:

    Interview starts: 5:05

    - Amber explains why her work in forensic dentistry has become the most fulfilling aspect of her career.

    - Dr. Alqahtani explains his "atlas" used for estimating age based on tooth development.

    - Breaking down why the pandemic and resulting quarantine has become a veritable "Black Friday" for human traffickers.

    - Prevention: the act of identifying a potential victim before an offender does.

    - How social media helps create an environment where younger people seek validation from strangers.

    - Finding ways for young women to seek empowerment without feeling they have to exploit themselves.

    - What is "grooming" in reference to sexual predation and trafficking?

    - What can hygienists do to identify and protect potential victims in their offices?

    QUOTES:

"My participation in forensics has been the most rewarding adjunct to my career as a clinical hygienist."

"Now [children] have an absolutely limitless audience of blank faces."

"To normalize sexual prowess at 13 is problematic."

    Show notes

    Please Leave a Review!

It's A Tale of Two Hygienists' monthly student roundtable episode, which means Andrew and Michelle have invited a roster of guests to educate student listeners on a chosen topic. This month's topic can be a nerve-wracking one for patients and hygienists alike: administering anesthesia.

Tina Clarke is a dental hygienist based in Oregon, which is one of the more liberal states when it comes to anesthesia administration; she is 20-year hygienist, has worked 14 years as an educator, and is known as the go-to person in her area when it comes to anesthesia. Marion Manski works as an associate professor at Fones School of Dental Hygiene as part of the University of Bridgeport. She has been teaching local anesthesia for over a decade.

In this episode, our guests reveal the secrets of the "Stab Lab," use smoothie straws to explain the idea of a bevel, and delve into the legal restrictions on anesthesia usage from state to state.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:

    Interview starts: 4:06

    - Why no training dummy can measure up to an actual person when practicing anesthesia techniques.

    - Tina and Marion share their tips and tricks for calming your nerves while giving injections.

    - The importance of understanding "anatomical landmarks" when lining up your injection.

    - Why Marion advocates pairing articaine with septocaine, and the reason septocaine ended up getting such a bad rap.

    - The guests' recipes for success when it comes to sharps safety.

    - Considering what a hygienist can say or do to calm patients before and during injections.

    QUOTES:

"[Anesthesia] is not as scary as we think."

"You can use the mannequin just so far, and then you need to do the real deal."

"You also learn a lot when you are the patient."

"Visualize popping a zit when you're giving that injection!"

"I think we can all agree hygienists give way better shots."

"We're teaching it all the same, it's just [that] States' rights get in the way."

On this week's episode of Fast Facts - Perio Edition your host, Katrina Sanders, RDH takes us through yellow complex bacteria as classified by Sokransky et al in their 1998 classifications.

    Quotes:

"These bacteria begin to release chemical signals that will eventually invite the next group of bacteria, encouraging a favorable condition for these orange and red complex bacteria to be able to join the colonization."
