    Quotes:

"It should be noted that that call area is an area that is non keratinized, which is why it's so easy for our sulcular epithelium or our sulcular lining to easily ulcerate if there's a place of infection and our probe is articulating into that area."

"We know that if there's a diastema that's present, for example, or a loss of contact in between two adjacent teeth, that that interdental papilla could be absent and there is no call to angulate into."

It's A Tale of Two Hygienists' student roundtable episode, which means Andrew and Michelle have invited a roster of guests to educate student listeners on a chosen topic. This month's topic is on restorative hygiene and how the hygienists who practice it train to make teeth look as good as they did the day they first burst out of the gumline.

Melisa McCannel is the dental hygiene program director for the Pima Medical Institute in Seattle. Andrea Leach is tenured faculty and the restorative lead at Columbia Basin College in Pasco, WA. Ann Mora, RDH, has worked in restorative hygiene since graduating from Pierce College in Washington.

In this episode, our guests discuss how little known restorative hygiene actually is, break down the education process semester by semester, and delve into their own hands-on experience.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:

    Interview starts: 4:02

    - The surprising lack of knowledge about restorative hygiene throughout the industry.

    - What do restorative hygiene programs look like throughout Washington state?

    - Ann describes her hands-on experience learning about restorative hygiene in school.

    - Melisa lays out the decreasing number of errors restorative hygiene students are allowed to make during the course of their education.

    - Ann's first restorative hygiene patient: her boyfriend.

    - Walking us through the steps for getting licenced as a restorative hygienist.

    - Melisa discusses the benefits of working in a private practice as a restorative hygienist.

    QUOTES:

"If you want to be the best that you can be, don't pick and choose your skillset."

"Training the eye as well as the hand is a huge part of what we instill in our students."

"I'm not worried about their grades, I'm worried about the outcomes."

"I feel like most of the class went into it very well-prepared—nervous, but prepared."

"A restoration is a restoration, so the only thing that's different is preparing them."

"It's insane what you can do when you add a restorative hygienist to the mix."

On this week's episode of Fast Facts - Perio Edition your host, Katrina Sanders, RDH talks to us about anatomy of the periodontium, focusing on the gingiva.

    Quotes:

"So in the perio world, I like to explain to my patients, your keratinized tissue could be like the palm of your hand and the skin on the palm of your hand, more firm and protective and your non keratinized would be if you were to flip your hand over and you were to grab the loose skin on the back of your hand."

"So when you're probing your patient, you are essentially probing how many millimeters of free gingiva is present."

259 Neurology And Vitamin Considerations During Covid-19 With Dr. Stasha Gominak Dec 23, 2020
    Show notes

Please Leave a Review! As part of A Tale of Two Hygienists' year-end review, Michelle spoke to a returning guest about the tricky equilibrium of vitamin intake and how that relates to oral health.

Dr. Stasha Gominak is a neurologist-turned-sleep coach who learned of the link between chronically poor sleep and chronic illness. As part of RightSleep, she investigates how a little bit of vitamin deficiency can go a long way to causing long-term impacts on the body, including airway paralysis during REM sleep—which leads to a whole host of oral issues!

In this episode, Dr. Gominak discusses the complex relationship vitamins have with the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, reveals the weirdest part of medicine she's ever experienced, and delves into the obstacles she and her patients encounter when trying to find the right vitamin dosage.

    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:

    Interview starts: 15:35

    - Recognizing the four major types of phyla hanging out in our stomach and how they relate to vitamins.

    - Why washing certain vegetables can actually negatively impact our vitamin intake.

    - Dr. Gominak tells us a story about a small but important neurotransmitter called acetylcholine.

    - Finding the right balance of B vitamins for your patient.

    - How acetylcholine ties into cigarette addiction and even autism spectrum disorders.

    - Dr. Gominak lays out the two opposing alliances in the battle over OTC vitamin distribution.

    QUOTES:

"It's a really good time to come back around and flesh out what you know about Vitamin D in the time of COVID."

"Too little B5 causes the same problems as too much B5."

"B vitamins are not innocent bystanders. They are aggressively part of your nervous system."

"You always imbue the vitamins with the power to take away the sleep as well as to give the sleep."

"We focus on sleep apnea, but every person who is unconscious and sleeping on a bed runs the risk of occluding their airway completely."

"It is a lot of work to put together a coordinated clinical plan and to make someone believe you."

Fast Facts: Perio Edition "Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans AKA AA" Dec 21, 2020
    Show notes

On this week's episode of Fast Facts - Perio Edition your host, Katrina Sanders, RDH talks to us about bacteria outlier, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans!

    Quotes:

"Although there were some pieces of evidence that did point to the fact that there was some plausibility that AA could be present in rapid rate episodic cases, we also saw that P. gingivalis showed up to the party and along with her, she brought her buddies Tannerella forsythia and Treponema denticola."

"Currently this bacteria, we believe, is linked to other systemic diseases when it is able to create a systemic burden by entering the bloodstream and circulating through the body."
