How to Reframe ANY "Problem" to Make it Help You Get Stronger Aug 23, 2019
    Show notes

In an effort to keep it real, Matt opens up about a very mundane recent "battle" he dealt with. The key takeaway is that it is not the perceived obstacle in front of you that matters as much as your attitude toward it and reaction to it. Reframing is not something that just applies to the macro challenges of impressive past guests... it applies to YOU in every second of every day. What language are you using to talk to yourself about your current situation and how do you relay your situation to the world? Are you playing the helpless victim? Or are you taking action to overcome whatever is in your way and seeing that obstacle as a gift that was given to you to make you stronger?

    SHOW NOTES:

Technology connects us with anyone but it can make us impatient if we're not careful, (6:57). A story about mice, (8:06). "Why is this happening to me right now when I have so much other crap to get done?", (10:23). "And it's as simple as that. It's flipping a switch, and all the sudden this became this project that I was excited about. And I had energy toward it and I was fired up. And I was on the balls of my feet instead of on my heels. And feeling bad for myself.", (13:04). "It sounds like it's just minutiae and it's just little stuff but as people say, 'how you do one thing is how you do everything'. Well, when you conquer whatever it may be that's having you pull your hair out.... all the sudden you get momentum to go toward the bigger things," (15:26). "And the core of it is: don't look at yourself as a victim...And don't look the situations that come to you, that you have in your head as "bad", don't look at them as bad, look at them as a gift," (16:00). "You can hear these amazing conversations, and that's cool, but not if you don't apply it," (18:59). "Look at your life like it's the movie that you're the star of, and make it go well. Don't be the movie where it's just about, 'why am I always the victim?' No one wants to watch that movie," (19:20). "Everyone's in their own boat and everyone's boat has a couple of leaks," (19:44). "So stop feeling bad for yourself... ...stop complaining and just do something about it," (21:19). "The ball is in your court. My ball is in my court," (21:49).

City on a Hill Actor, Mark O'Brien Aug 16, 2019
    Show notes

If you've been watching City on a Hill this year on Showtime there is no doubt you've been riveted by Mark's portrayal of Jimmy Ryan, the slippery brother to Jonathan Tucker's Frankie Ryan. But what you'll know after listening to our conversation is that, not unlike every other guest on 10,000 "No"s, the quality of his work is mostly the result of Mark's sheer will, passion and tenacity.

He's been a series regular on AMC's critically acclaimed Halt and Catch Fire, Amazon's The Last Tycoon, and did six years prior to moving to the US in his native Canada on the CBC series Republic of Doyle, for which he was nominated for two Canadian Comedy Awards for Best Actor in a Television Series as well as a nomination for Best Director of a Television Series (they let him behind the camera because he's also an Award Winning Filmmaker for several short films he's written, directed, produced, edited and starred in). He's also starred in Denis Villenueve's Arrival, The Front Runner opposite Hugh Jackman directed by Jason Reitman, Noah Baumbach's next untitled project, opposite Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. But the real joy of this conversation is the wisdom and experience and the lessons that we can all learn from the journey Mark took from the tiny town of Paradise in Newfoundland all the way to Hollywood.

    SHOW NOTES:

How Mark landed City on a Hill and why it's such a special role for him, (4:05). "So I booked my own flight from Atlanta to New York, put myself up in a hotel for two days and literally just went over it and over it and over it and over it...," (11:05). "I wanted a role like this for as long as I could remember...", (11:41). "If things were coming easily to me... ... hand me anything." (14:13). "If there's something more interesting you can do...", 16:53). "Things seep in you sometimes don't know where they come from...", (18:20). Growing up in a tiny community with no connections to show business, (23:10). "We would edit with two VCRs... ... a way we can do it", 25:08 – 26:08). After all of his filmmaking, not getting into film school and having to go with the flow, (28:20). With no agent and not much happening locally, Mark catches a crazy break.... that takes a year, (30:58). "I knew I could do it...", (32:48). Going into massive debt to make movies when nothing was paying him, (35:30). Watching Edward Norton in Primal Fear and thinking, "oh, that's a performance," (38:10). "Eventually someone's gonna think I can do it the way I think I can do it," (39:34). PWI - Passion Will Inform, (40:02). "If you have passion, Will and information, you'll be fine," (43:11). The move from Canada to Hollywood, (44:10). Why American filmmaking can take more risks than Canadian filmmaking, (45:02). How fatherhood has changed Mark's work and approach, (48:23). The advantages and disadvantages of two actors in the family (husband/wife), (54:30). How being a filmmaker has helped Mark understand "no"s as an actor, (57:36). The secret to Mark's chamelian-like shifts with accents and vibe, (1:01:00). "Quote about Stella Adler and imagination and films with buddies", (1:01:40 – 1:02:28). Discussion about Gary Oldman and choices as an actor to be big and bold, and sometimes quiet and invisible, (1:05:10). "I still find that you need to know your role in the movie," (1:05:43). "Advice to younger self... ... the whole time," (1:14:13 - 1:14:22).

How To Compete Everyday, Jake Thompson Aug 09, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome back to 10,000 "No"s and thank you for being here again. I know last week's episode was quick, for my birthday, but hopefully it home in terms of making you realize just how lucky we all are to be here. This week's guest, Jake Thompson, feels lucky to be able to do what he does, which is coach, speak, design apparel, host a podcast and run a company.

His podcast is Compete Every Day and it's great. I was on it a while back and really enjoyed his sincerity and what he's doing with this company. He works with youth athletics, he writes a blog. I'm just very impressed with his whole operation. And sitting down with him I was amazed to find something out about him that I never would have guessed. But, again, like all of his work, it's something I didn't see because he has worked so hard to overcome it and succeeded. He loves sports, loves to compete, but what you'll hear as we speak is that he has extreme compassion and generosity at the core of his being.

    SHOW NOTES:

"What I do today is a professional speaker and coach, with a lot of emphasis on resilience, mental toughness", (1:59). Have a long-term goal in mind to always keep you focused, (5:00). "You just have to bob and weave to get to where you want to go, don't give up on your mission and vision", (7:10). How his past experiences led to his desires for achieving success, (9:01). "Being a highly competitive person in general, I had to learn the difference between healthy competing and trying to compare compete with everyone", (9:50). "I have ADHD, so I must be really good at wearing multiple hats and writing everything down, while staying consistent and on track", (17:00). Running a business requires consistency and leadership because every decision you make will impact the team and company, (20:00). Read books and connect with people, (22:02). "It's about not being afraid to test things and see what works and what doesn't so you don't really know what's going to fit your business and your personality until you give it a shot", (22:58). Entrepreneurship is like a puzzle, it's really intriguing but the best part is when you do not give up, and let your grow mindset help you rise and thrive, (26:07). The better I can do my job the more people I could help, if you want to succeed help other people succeed, (29:30). A winning competitor in life or someone that I can consider successful in life have grit, they have a growth mindset, they practice gratitude, they pursue greatness in everything that they do, and then they groom others, (31:15). Grit and growth mindset allows you to endure the "no's", the 10,000 "No"s they allow you to keep growing and getting better. Gratitude is what allows you to enjoy the process because without gratitude we lose sight of the why, purpose and the journey that is life. Greatness means are you consistently showing up, do you have that attention to detail are you giving your best to everything that you do. Finally, true leadership is not about the followers you have but the leaders you create. What are you doing as a mentor to give back and help build others around you? These make a successful life because you are building a legacy, (31:56). Never let a hard day win, (34:20). We tend to have a huge goal and not take it one step at a time, don't let setbacks win, use that as motivation to keep going. All plans will unfold beautifully if taken one step at a time, (37:00). The biggest key for us, it's not to get frustrated or demotivated by how far we have to go or how much we have to do, just take one step, because those little steps start to add up overtime. It's when we decided it's too far or too long that we quit and let one day into two, into weeks. Just treat it like a game of tag, (38:50). "The word no means not yet, keep competing, and don't be as distracted by the opposite sex and don't be afraid of challenges that are ahead of you, use them as opportunities to grow," (41:20).

    SHOW NOTES:

Dexter's Julie Benz, How to Thrive Even After You've Been Killed Off Jul 26, 2019
    Show notes

Julie Benz is an actress. She's been working steadily for a long, long time, but probably most recognizable as Dexter's wife, Rita, on Showtime's Critically Acclaimed smash hit, Dexter. What you may not know is that Julie was a serious figure skater from the age of 3 to 13, on a high level. Her rigorous training, from such a young age, has no doubt had a big effect on her career, perhaps mostly in the area of her mental game. This is why she not only survived, but thrived after being killed off of Dexter in the 4th season's finale. She claims to be lucky. I beg to differ. In my opinion, her success is the result of her ability to out-grind the competition, but you decide for yourself.

    SHOW NOTES:

Growing up as a competitive figure skater, (3:20). Reasoning behind doing well on auditions for acting, (5:54). Transitioning from skating to acting,(9:05). Practicing discipline as a figure skater, (12:30). "I think the hardest part about what we do is when we are not working and when we do get a string of 'No's.", (15:15). Coming off of Dexter and entering pilot season, (17:00). Testing for the show, Dexter, (19:55). "For me, it was freeing to take the mask away, but in the eyes of critics and Hollywood, I was so brave to go on camera with no makeup on.", (21:32). Listening and reacting on set, (24:57). Learning to deal with being replaced, (26:21). Having to go to therapy after such trauma, (27:12). "It was the best thing to ever happen to me. The moment when I was killed off the show. The moment that everyone still talks about.", (31:34). Suffering from panic attacks finding out her character's death, (34:07). How Matt and Julie met, (36:55). "In the moments when I feel rejection, I have a method writing 10-20 things I'm grateful for.", (38:27). Experiencing a bad audition once in a while, (42:55). Recalling the story where everyone has a bad day, (43:47). Having much love for acting, the set and the crew, (45:57). "I've always loved being an actor. It was never thought I was going to do when I was a kid.", (46:12). Realizing she wasn't a natural actor early on, (47:35). Proving yourself over and over again in the acting industry, (50:52). Encountering mean producers on her first television series about her weight, (52:50). "The more secure you are with who you are is what resonates in a room.", (55:47). Overall benefits of challenging yourself overtime, (57:30). Seeking out coaches and mentors, (58:05). Underlying theme of. "You are not alone.", (58:17). Reframing the "No", (58:38). Refusing to Be Defined by a Disability, Ashley Longo Jul 12, 2019
    Show notes

At 22 years of age, Ashley Longo just graduated Loyal University in Los Angeles and she's headed back there for Law school at the end of this Summer. She's accomplished this and many other things, including mentoring a young girl in San Diego who is newly paralyzed, interning in Senator Diane Feinstein's office, playing basketball, performing in school plays, getting her Driver's license the day she turned 16, body-surfing red flag waves and skiing among others, despite having been paralyzed from the waist down since birth. But being born with a spinal problem that is formally defined as a "bone abnormality" has done nothing to slow her down. As you'll hear, she doesn't think of her life as withstanding 10,000 "No"s. She just refuses to acknowledge the word "no" altogether.

    SHOW NOTES:

"People may look at me and I might look a little different, but I don't even view myself as the girl in the wheelchair..." (3:05). Not seeing the physical challenge as "too big of a thing" because it's all she knew, (4:22). "I've kind of learned if you act like it's not a big deal, other people don't act like it's a big deal", (6:43). "I've had a lot of bigger obstacles that I've had to go through that I think, yeah, definitely has made me a lot stronger of a person...", (9:38). "What was great is my parents never put me in a special school...", (10:13). How Ashley's family's decision not to baby her gave her confidence, (11:09). "No one wants to be around the victim, no one wants to be around someone that's feeling sorry for themselves all the time.", (13:37). "The way society views people with disabilities has been the biggest hurdle for me.", (14:54). Not wanting to be solely defined by a disability, (18:14). "You just have to go with the flow, you can't freak out and plan about that in the future...", (21:18). Matt answers some college students questions about staring into the abyss as they begin their journey into "the real world". While he loves and encourages the self-discovery and reflection, he offers that there is no substitute for the learning process that comes from experience. Referencing one of the World's Best Surfers, Laird Hamilton, he examines the role of uncertainty and our response to fear, offering that fear can be a great motivator.

How Gary Woodland Changed the Narrative to Become a Champion Jun 21, 2019
    Show notes

A self-described non-golf-lover, Matt reflects on the lessons listeners can learn from Gary Woodland's dramatic comeback from his previous 0-7 record when leading after 54 holes to win his first Major Championship, the US Open (and admits he may be changing his tune about golf).

At Pebble Beach, the major storyline at the start of Father's Day 2019 was Brooks Koepka's attempt to be the first golfer in 114 years to win the US Open in three consecutive years. Gary Woodland, who was atop the leader board, was largely expected to stumble, given his inability close out a win when ahead in the past. Staring down his demons, he was able to transform from Choker to Champion in dramatic 10,000 "No"s fashion, leaving clues for the rest of us about our ability to change as long as we recognize that our story isn't over.

    SHOWNOTES:

The theme of the show and this episode is about pushing through adversities and taking one step in front of the other, (3:12). What's the story that you tell yourself? (7:15). The story isn't over, what happens next with any situation is yet to be determined, speak the best into existence, (7:35). Woodland took a risk that makes him the champion that he is today, (9:29). There's a difference between playing not to lose and playing to win, which path will you take? (9:45). "How much are we really going after our goals versus how much are we just trying to brace ourselves so that we could hold our positions, and a lot of times when you're doing that, you end up losing the lead because you're thinking so much about losing the lead", (9:55). Whether you are a golf fan or not, Gary Woodland is living proof that the story is never over, don't give up before the end, (13:15). The scoreboard isn't the only thing that matters, giving it all you got is the message behind it all, (14:31). Are you doing everything that you can to 'win', what story are you telling, and do you still believe you can change the narrative from what the rest of the world see to what you envision? (14:47).
