How Celebrating Milestones Can Help You Stay on Track Jun 14, 2019
    Show notes

After attending a 25th college reunion and a 5th grade graduation in less than a week, Matt riffs on the benefits of stopping to smell the roses and acknowledge the progress that one has made in this solo episode.

    SHOWNOTES:

Sometimes you just have to take the risk and try something you've never tried before, (2:50). Celebrating milestones can help you keep on track, (3:25). Don't knock down the opportunities to evaluate yourself and find joy and meaning, (4:50). There's something really good for the spirit to rekindle some lost paths, (5:30). We must realize that it is important to celebrate the closing of one chapter and the beginning of another, it marks the progress of our growth and change, (7:41). There will always be a next step to life but you have to get your nose out of the ground and acknowledge your progress, (9:40). How can we make the celebration and the work, the same exact thing, if you can do that somehow, you've really succeeded, (10:45). Keep grinding but you also have to stop and smell the roses, (13:01). Strive to tell the most empowering story of yourself that you can, (13:10). There's no need to be someone else but you, (13:40). "You're going to learn some things, you're going to forget some things, be good at some things, fail at some things, you'll be up and down and all around, and just when you think you got the answer, you'll be challenged by a new obstacle, but the most important thing you can learn is keep taking that next step. If you fall down, get back up, dust yourself off, keep going, (14:15). Dr. Seus said, "You'll get mixed up, of course, as you already know. You'll get mixed up with many strange birds as you go. So be sure when you step. Step with care and great tact and remember that Life's a Great Balancing Act. Just never forget to be dexterous and deft. And never mix up your right foot with your left", (15:02).

The Go-to Acting Coach of Oscar Winners, Terry Knickerbocker Jun 07, 2019
    Show notes

For the past 20 years, Academy Award Winner Sam Rockwell has insisted on working Acting Coach Terry Knickerbocker to prepare for every one of his roles. An actor himself prior to teaching, Knickerbocker studied at the Experimental Theater Wing at NYU before working on stage with an actor who's technique was so specific and consistent that Terry had to seek out the actor's teacher, the late William Esper. Falling in love with the manor in which Esper worked after taking his two-year program, Terry began a 25 year stint teaching at the William Esper studio until 2015, when he ventured out on his own to open the Terry Knickerbocker Studio in Brooklyn, which offers a two-year Meisner program as well (you'll learn about the Meisner technique in the interview). In addition to running his studio, Terry is highly sought after for private coaching with such respected thespians John Leguziamo, Emmy Rossum, Natasha Lyonne, Rockwell and Chris Messina among others. So, while it was a huge surprise to me that Terry has been a passionate listener of 10,000 "No"s, once I got over the initial shock it made sense: he, like me, is obsessed with process. He is obsessed with the potential in human beings, whether they turn out to be future Oscar Winners or someone looking to hone their craft to the best of their own particular ability. It was an honor to sit down with him and discuss the craft and the long and winding road to being considered one of the best of the best in his field.

    SHOWNOTES:

Describing what he does as an acting coach, (3:37). Meisner's definition of acting, "Doing truthfully under imaginary circumstances.", (4:00). Coaching students to have them be "director-proof" on set, (5:05). "The worst thing is when you walk in not knowing. Time is money. There's no time on set for learning. You have to walk in knowing what you're doing.", (7:05). Interviewing students to have them find their North Star, (11:08). Self-sabotaging through fear, (16:24). Growing up with parents who exposed him to culture, (18:22). "I was a total underachiever. I was a very depressed and anxious kid. I don't think I had a happy childhood at all.", (19:50). Hardships during his childhood, (20:36). "I was high all the time starting in 9th grade.", (22:28). Lack of interest in academics into college, (22:44). Seeing an audition notice for an operetta during his first week in college, (23:20). "I didn't know what the hell I was doing, but I kept on getting these parts. I think I reached a plateau here and I need to train.", (24:35). Grasping what acting is while at NYU, (27:44). "We'd be in Washington Square Park doing scenes and there would be guide bringing the audience through and they would stop and watch us doing something.", (28:30). Enjoying the risk of performing in public spaces, (29:50). "It turned out NYU had given me a lot of great experiences, but hadn't given me a toolkit.", (34:26). Winning a grant from the Drama League of New York for Emerging Directors, (39:36). "Ultimately to be a good director, you have to direct hit shows, something has to work... It just isn't as pure to me as teaching.", (42:05). Crafting the behavior that honors the script, (46:28). "My simple job as a coach is I will always listen and look at what they do firs, and then my job is to make it better." (49:10). Believing all actors need to go to therapy to understand themselves, (51:15). Finding fascination in the idea of high achievement, (55:08). " 'What makes high achievement?' That's become my fascination since opening the studio." , (55:22). Having a love for acting and telling stories to be an actor, (56:32). "If there's no meaning in it, it's just like empty calories.", (59:15). Cultivating empathy for characters, (59:42). Having a playful spirit in the making of this art, (1:02:15). "The word, 'No,' means to me, 'What else?'", (1:06:36). Doing the work as an actor, (1:09:00). Keeping in mind, "F**k it.", (1:09:40). Reminding ourselves to be playful and find joy in our work, (1:10:27).

    Show notes

Sam Morris came into this world with severe allergies that set him apart from his peers from the time he was born. That very feeling of being an outsider is what made him so at ease on the tennis court, where he excelled. With seemingly endless bouts with near-death experiences, and after watching his sister lose her life, Sam fought his way back to sobriety and clarity. What You Do When No One is Watching is What You Get Rewarded For Later May 24, 2019
    Show notes

In this solo episode, Matt riffs on the idea that what you do when no one is watching is what gets rewarded later in public. Revealing a guest request made by the staff of an Acting Coach to Oscar Winners and Nominees who turns out to be a passionate listener to 10,000 "No"s, Matt talks about the importance of maintaining standards and how you never know who's out there listening, watching you, or being impacted by you, both positively and negatively.

    SHOWNOTES:

"Envisioning and speaking positively into the world and to yourself, (3:22). "It's a conscious choice to say the things to yourself that will encourage you and that will get you fired up to go after the things that YOU want to go after, (3:41). "You Don't Know Who's Listening", (4:50). It's important to always true to yourself even when no one is watching or listening, (5:40). When you're in a rud, say 'this is significant', (7:53). "It's that Rocky Balboa mentality, just staying in the game. You're not yet fighting the prize fight but you only will have a shot at the prize fight if you stay in the game, it means just not going through the motions because at some point the passion will go away, but pro's stay up no matter what, (12:17). If you're a parent and you're listening and you're being pretty honest, you'll realize that you'll do things that you are not proud of but making that constant change is what's really significant, (14:14). "In your life, how do all of your actions land on and impact other people whether it's good or bad? Hopefully we're all striving for the better and to leave this place better than we found it, (14:40).

How to Let Go of a "No" So It Doesn't Control You May 17, 2019
    Show notes

In this solo episode, Matt answers a passionate listener's letter that asks, among other things, "What if you can't overcome it? And there isn't anything better? And you just have to gracefully let go of it? What's your advice for people for whom trying isn't an option? A "no" that isn't a "not yet", but a "never". Without sugar-coating it, Matt sites examples from past interviews with Matt Long, Suzy Batiz, Lynne Marie Morski, Heidi Dean and Amy Budden to explain that NO ONE has it easy... even the people who have "made it". It's in the way we frame our experiences and react to them that we "win" or "lose".

How to Protect Yourself & Your Loved Ones, Top Self-Defense Expert, Tony Blauer May 03, 2019
    Show notes

Tony Blauer's image has been gracing the covers of Martial Arts and Self-Defense magazines for decades, he teaches tier-one operators, and he is a big deal in that world, but the reason I wanted to sit down with him for 10,000 "No"s is that his system, and the way he articulates it, is so personal, practical and applicable to each and every one of us. Contrary to the stereotype that a tough guy would go around bullying people, Tony believes that violence, and his own application of violence, should be avoided at all costs. When you hear this conversation it will not only make you more aware of your surroundings, but also more aware of your relationship to fear in all areas of your life. His rise to the top of his field was not without tremendous resilience to overcome the naysayers who mocked his new approach to self-defense. I encourage you all to not only listen, but following the episode, to check out the links in the show notes to get to know Tony's work in more detail and possibly even arrange to have him come to your community at some point. It could be the difference between life and death.

    SHOW NOTES:

Understanding the timeline of violence, (18:05). Startle Flinch is our fastest human reaction, (25:45). "Fear will creep its way into all of our lives, however the ability to protect ourselves and our loved ones is arguably the single most important skill one can possess", (27:17). If there were sudden violence happening around you, you don't have the time to dial 911, you have to be aware before the conflict, (30:03). You have to be the first responder of your confrontation, (30:23). "Our (self-defense) system is entirely scientific, it's a blend of physics, physiology, and psychology", (35:11). "I can take any person, world class or beginner, and make them stronger in minutes by helping them understand (the system)", (35:22). As soon as you break contact, you must run to safety, (42:23). "Don't let ego and pride dictate your next strategy", (43:00). Muscle memory isn't a thing, it's all neuro programming, (46:00). "My big quest is to get the world to understand that practicing for self-defense to deal with a violent encounter is emotionally and psychologically very different than practicing a martial art of a combat sport", (46:37). How to improve your situational awareness, (53:50). "KNOW FEAR" is everything because we have to know fear and understand the psychological mechanism and how it hijacks our thoughts, (1:11:55). Mad Men & Parenthood's Emmy-Award-Winning Casting Director, Carrie Audino Apr 26, 2019
    Show notes

Carrie Audino won a Primetime Emmy in 2010 for Casting the critically-acclaimed series, Mad Men. She was nominated another 5 times. She also won the Artios Award, presented by the Casting Society of America and was nominated another 4 times, one of which was for her work casting the pilot of NBC's critically-acclaimed series, Parenthood. But for all of the accolades, she is a workhorse, a grinder who feels compelled to "get it right" when it comes to choosing the right actor for the role, even if she ruffles some feathers along the way. A no-nonsense, straight-talking tough chick from New Jersey, Carrie was an actor herself, having gone through the prestigious program at the Tisch school of NYU. But, like so many other guests of 10,000 "No"s, Audino pivoted when she realized she felt more joy and gratification from casting than being cast. Already juggling her demanding career with motherhood, she's now adding yet another title to her impressive resume, with the upcoming launch of her own podcast, "It's Not Personal", where she'll go in depth with well-known actors about their experiences being cast throughout their careers.

    SHOWNOTES:

Erinn Hayes, How to Survive Being Killed Off a Sitcom Prematurely (by Scoring Lead Roles in TWO Netlfix Comedy Series) Apr 19, 2019
    Show notes

Erinn Hayes is funny. There's no way around it, as I discovered at the table read of the newly released Netflix Comedy Series, Huge in France. But less than a year before that day, she was inexplicably killed off a very lucrative gig, where she played the wife of Kevin James on his CBS sitcom, Kevin Can Wait. They say that success is the best revenge and, after the initial shock and depression over the loss of a regular paycheck, Hayes picked herself up and got back in the game. Not only did she succeed in landing the role of Vivian in Huge in France, but shortly after we wrapped Netflix decided to give her and Rob Huebel a spinoff of their cult-favorite Adult-Swim show, Animal Hospital, with the forthcoming Medical Police. A real-life Mom and wife when she's not juggling her career duties or renovating houses, Erinn tears the notion of the "glamorous" Hollywood life down to the studs and talks about overcoming 10,000 "No"s.

    SHOW NOTES:

"I've always been the performer kid, doing plays since I was young. I always knew that I wanted to act", (2:55). She explains how she stumbled into an amazing theater program in college, (3:25). Once you get in certain doors there are doors that will continuously open for you, but it becomes increasingly harder to get the other doors open, (5:49). "You have to milk what you got and slowly chip away at that wall, until you get that one thing that maybe gets a little bit more views until people start to see you in most ways", (8:50). Advises young innovators or producers that jump into the, "wait until this gets big" to take it realistically, (13:49). "What I care about is did I have fun on set, am I proud at my work, and did the check clear, 123, if those three things happened then everything else is bonus", (14:06). You have to go in with the mindset of having huge hope in yourself but at the same time prepare for the worst, (17:29). "Wrapping my head around luck, and how much this business and any business is hard work, the talent to do the thing you're working hard at and that element of luck, (21:58). Luck is one factor that is tricky to determine, (23:20). Speaks about being fired and learning from the experience and ego, (30:00). "I'd be a sitcom wife if it were her story, and where I have a sitcom husband", (35:27). I guess the word "NO" just means find a different yes. Just let it go quickly and then move on, it means move on to the next opportunity, (36:18). If there's some sort of defeat or some sort of "NO" take what you can from it, salvage it, and move on," (37:10).

Gad Elmaleh, How to go from being Huge in France to being Huge Everywhere Apr 12, 2019
    Show notes

Gad Elmaleh has been voted the Funniest Man in France, named Night of the Order of Arts and Letters by France's Minister of Culture and named Night of the National Order of Quebec. He's also worked with such giants as Steven Spielberg, Woody Allen and Al Pacino... but you may know him from his hugely popular Netflix comedy specials, Gad Gone Wild, or American Dream, if you don't know him as "the Seinfeld of France". Tonight, April 12, 2019, he adds Huge in France, the scripted Netflix Comedy Series very loosely based on his life and comedy, to his repertoire.

Luckily for me, I had the great fortune of acting opposite Gad on Huge in France, where I learned that his attention to the craft of comedy and his philosophy on taking risks are two of the biggest keys to his immense success. We talk about comedy, acting, hard work, risk, bombing on stage, starting over from scratch and much, much more. We may or may not have a few laughs at ourselves for the ridiculousness of two guys sitting in a hotel room talking about themselves and their work.

    SHOWNOTES:

"For me I want to 'be in a box' as a writer, a comedian, joke-teller, storyteller, (6:20). "Comic's sometimes say 'I'm a comic and I want to be taken seriously and want people to see that I can be moving", but you don't need that, you don't need to be serious, just be funny," (7:39). "The comedy I like are the real life comedies that is sincere, sad, real or accident, but I don't like gags. I like to be touched by it because there is always a problem that is being solved", (9:15). My dad was a mime and I was inspired by him, I used his influence even in my acting, (11:56). Sebastian Maniscalco is one of my favorite comics in America, his body language is almost a mime sometimes and you see everything that he describes, (14:06). I need to do new material, for the audience but obviously for myself too, I want to have fun. (15:24). "Maybe the thing I fear the most is to get bored", (15:44). Some people will say it's being a workaholic but I'm just passionate about it, (17:01). "If you don't have the language, it's hard to be yourself.", (17:59). When I met you Matt, you were talking about "feeling saucy" what does that mean?, (22:05). It's hard to do your job but not as completely as you want, I getting there little by little but it's a process, (27:50). The great feeling is every time that I get a laugh, I would feel like I earned it, (28:30). "I wanted to go to law school but I failed the exam", (31:40). "I was more interested in people, humans, history than pure political science," (32:25). "I'm obsessed with obsession... I'm obsessed with observation. Sometimes when I do a movie and I get bored, I get more excited about observing the crew and speaking to them," (33:50). Rock bands could relate to this, one day I woke up and had no idea where I was. Then I was wondering why I do what I do?, (40:35). I learned something about stand up comedy, do what's the most organic, make it natural and go with the flow, (52:13). The word "NO" is the beginning of a very long process that I am not going to give up, (56:50). "You have to see yourself as the starting line, but never as the goal.", (57:50). "The only things we regret in life are those that we didn't do.", (59:13).
