The Interview with Terence C. Ganon

Who has had the biggest influence on your podcasting career and why?

Charlie Rose.  I have been watching Charlie for years and absolutely love the fact that he has at least some of his guests on for the full hour.  He talks in-depth with them and lets them tell the full arc of their story.  I’ve modelled the format of The WorkNotWork Show directly on Charlie’s approach.  That said, I’m less articulate than Charlie, so I try and talk less!

If there’s someone past, or present, that you’d love to have an opportunity to have go to dinner with, who would that be and why?

Richard Bach.  As a kid I was given his books: Nothing by Chance, Stranger to the Ground, Jonathan Livingston Seagull all come to mind.  Nothing by Chance really became a life philosophy for me — there is nothing put in front of us, even bad things, which is a result of capricious random chance.  Sometimes it takes a while to figure out what the reason was (in some cases a lifetime) but it’s there, somewhere.  I would like to ask Richard if he really intended for it to have that kind of impact and thank him for the fact that it did — at least with me.  It’s got me through a lot.

What is it, about your audience, that continues to surprise you?

That there really is an audience for long form interviews ‘on radio’.  This is a world with an incredibly short attention span and very visually oriented.  So when I realize that someone has sat through the entire episode (even Thirsk, clocking in at nearly two hours!) I am reassured that there is still the capacity for deep engagement in a subject and people still want to use their own imagination.  I am humbled by their trust and hope it is rewarded with a satisfying listening experience.  It’s certainly that for which I’m striving.

In one word, how would your best friends describe you? Why do you think that is?

Intense. I often fail to know when to back off either professionally or personally.  For example, if I’m working on a project with them, I can wear out my welcome because I’m not a big one for breaks and ‘Miller Time’.  We’re here: let’s get it done and move on to the next thing.  It’s not a positive quality.

Good example: I felt a compulsion to reformat your questionnaire!  I’m not proud of this ‘quirk’. 😉

If you had one day, completely free, away from work, no watch on, and could do whatever the hell you wanted, what would it be an why?

I’d go slope soaring at Rocky Knoll, along the Central Oregon Coast.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank, or give a shout-out to?

Way at the top of the list, my wife Michelle.  She has been a saint as I’ve wandered around the professional landscape for nearly a decade trying to figure out what it is I’m supposed to do, until I found this.  I truly hope that her faith in me is rewarded by the eventual success of the Show.

Second, my parents, both of whom are hail and hearty well into their Eighties. I can never hope to repay them for all of what they have done and continue to do for me.  I just hope that I eventually make them proud.

The Interview with Colin Miller

Who has had the biggest influence on your podcasting career and why?

My high school debate coach – Jane Amelon – and my high school forensics coach – Mary Sue Crommelin. They taught me how to be an effective public speaker, craft a narrative, and use framing devices in storytelling.

If there’s someone, past or present, that you’d love to have an opportunity to go to dinner with, who would that be and why?

I remember from college that Socrates never wrote anything and that what we know of his teachings comes from his student, Plato. I’d love to have dinner with Socrates to hear him in his own words and get his take on the current state of the world.

What is it, about your audience, that continues to surprise you?

I’m constantly surprised by our audience’s desire to learn the nuances of the law. Whenever I worry that we’re delving to deeply into legal analysis, our audience always surprising me by asking for more.

In one word, how would your best friends describe you? Why do you think that is?

Dependable. I think my friends consider me to be someone who is timely, reliable, and always willing to lend a helping hand.

If you had one day, completely free, away from work, no watch on, and could do whatever the hell you wanted, what would it be and why?

(1) Go to the beach with my wife; (2) read a good book; (3) watch a good movie; (4) play a good tennis match; (5) have a meal at one of my favorite restaurants.

Any advertisers you want to give a shout out to? Or anyone you’d like to thank?

I would like to thank Stamps.com and Blue Apron, two companies who have given consistent support to Undisclosed since our early days.

The Interview with Odell McCants

Who had the biggest influence on your podcasting career and why?

The biggest influence on my podcasting career has been Carey Green of Podcast Fast Track. I spent two years on the idea of podcasting. Had all the equipment, the Audacity software and even signed up for Libsyn hosting. Started listening to all of the “how to podcast experts” and found myself stuck on trying to figure it all out and getting nowhere. I discovered Carey and his podcast editing company somehow on YouTube (was still spending too much time “researching”). Gave Carey a call and he told me to get off the phone, press record and send him the file. He has been not only the editor of my show but a mentor and coach. I couldn’t do this without him and his team.

If there’s someone, past or present, that you’d love to have an opportunity to go to dinner with, who would that be and why?

I would love to have dinner with the late coach John Wooden. Not only a great basketball coach but a leader and developer of young men. I think he would have been highly successful in business too.

What is it, about your audience, that continues to surprise you?

I am always surprised by who is listening. Was recently very surprised that a leader in sports business news content said he’s a “big fan” of the show.

In one word, how would your best friends describe you? Why do you think that is?

Connector. It’s one of my strengths. I enjoy connecting others to the people, information or resources they need to know or can use.

If you had one day, completely free, away from work, no watch on, and could do whatever the hell you wanted, what would it be and why?

Sit on the beach at Shoal Bay West in Anguilla.

The Interview with our Podfluencer, Weirick

Who has had the biggest influence on your podcasting career & why?

The podmothers: Sarah Koenig, Rabia Chaudry, and Julie Snyder. These women brought legitimate and important podcasting to the American public.

If there’s someone, past or present, that you’d love to have an opportunity to go to dinner with, who would that be and why?

Bret Easton Ellis. His knowledge of pop culture and the podcasting world is unsurpassed.  His opening monologues are the best crafted in the podcast world.

What is it, about your audience, that continues to surprise you?

The insight they demonstrate in their questions.  My audience continues to ask insightful and poignant questions.

In one word, how would your best friends describe you? Why do you think that is?

Unrestrained.  Because I am comfortable taking unpopular positions that challenge orthodox views.

If you had one day, completely free, away from work, no watch on, and could do whatever the hell you wanted, what would it be and why?

Devour podcasts, from comedy, true crime, and political. Spend 24 hours with earbuds in.

Any advertisers you want to give a shout out to? Or anyone you’d like to thank ?
  1. Blue Apron for teaching me to cook. I’d like to thank the Undisclosed family and Rebecca Lavoie for all their support in my podcasting career.

An Interview with Co-Host Scott Philbrook

Who Had the Biggest Influence on Your Podcast Career?

I’ve always had a fascination with broadcasting in general. The very idea of it has been intoxicating to me since I was much younger. My great-uncle was newscaster David Brinkley and I went to college in Edward R Murrow’s hometown of Greensboro, NC. I grew up riding in the car with my Grandfather listening to Paul Harvey and later when I got to college I got into CarTalk. I wanted to do what those guys were doing. So for me my biggest influences where early journalism pioneers and later Paul Harvey, Click and Clack and ultimately Robert Krulwich and Jad Abumrad.

If there’s someone, past or present, that you’d love to have an opportunity to go to dinner with, who would that be and why?

Roman Mars – I would pick Roman not only because of what he’s accomplished but because I saw him speak at Podcast Movement 2015 in Texas and I loved the honesty of his talk. He actually warned podcasters not to join a network because, “networks do not have your best interests at heart” or something similar. That may be out of context so don’t quote my quote, but the point was, here is this guy who has arguably one of the greatest podcast networks in existence and he’s warning us to stay away if we ever get big enough to be approached by a network.

And…Roman also said something else that I can’t forget. He talked about how all he wanted to do was get onto the real radio and then when he got there he found that he didn’t enjoy it as much.

  1. My take-away from his talk was stay independent as long as you can, and embrace the format for what it is. It has advantages over other methods of propagation that you have to recognize. For me personally, it was a message that podcasting is now and it’s the time and place to be doing it and don’t approach it as a means to an end, but approach it as the final destination and take advantage of all the freedom it has to offer now before it becomes something entirely different.

What is it, about your audience, that continues to surprise you?

There are so many things about our audience that surprise me. The first thing is their constant interaction and their ongoing loyalty to the show. We maintain a strong social media presence, which works for me because I’m obsessively social anyway, and to be honest, I love waking up and the first thing in the morning I do is grab my iphone and see who has sent us what messages on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram because it’s not only an affirmation that we’re doing the right thing with our show, it’s a direct connection with our listeners that is centric to how we pick topics and present the show.

    Join them on FB
  2. The other thing that amazes me is the low number of trolls we have. There’s always going to be people that hate what you do and they’re going to let you know it on social media. They’re out there for sure, and we get them too, but 8 out of 10 of them are pretty polite and the other 2, well they get blocked, banned and shunned, but even the most negative review or comment often has a seed of something you should pay attention to in it.

Test Drive the Show Here!
In one word, how would your best friends describe you? Why do you think that is?

Wow! This is an exceedingly personal question. I’m not sure what it’s getting at, but I guess my best friends would describe me as ambitious and determined. At least I would hope that they would. Frankly, I’d rather they answer this question than me.

If you had one day, completely free, away from work, no watch on, and could do whatever the hell you wanted, what would it be and why?

Go to the beach in North Carolina with my wife and 8 year old son because that’s were I grew up and it’s the place I find myself the most relaxed.

Follow Them
Any advertisers you want to give a shout out to? Or anyone you’d like to thank?

We’ve had a lot of great advertisers on our show and it’s hard to put into words how grateful we’ve been for their support. Without them, there would be no Astonishing Legends, but one of our favorite sponsors is The Great Courses Plus.

They’re just a perfect fit for us. What they do is a much more respectable version of what we do and they’re an easy sell for us.

I would also give a solid shout out to other long time supporters of our show, Blue Apron. One of the most amazing things about becoming more successful with Astonishing Legends was learning that when we got new sponsors we got free stuff and that been a blast, but how can you go wrong with Blue Apron?

They are sending us these amazing meals regularly and doing testimonials for their product is a walk in the park. They’re a prime example of how a sponsor has literally changed my life. My family eats at home more often, I cook more often, we are at the table together. Everything about it is great.

Click Here to See Scott’s Favorite Episodes & Podcast Recommendations

I’m sure that’s more than you wanted, but I’d also add a thank you to Mack Weldon, Indochino and Warby Parker. These 3 sponsors have changed the way I dress, look and feel. Between all of these companies, since our show has started, my life has changed for the better on many levels. That’s why it’s so easy for Forrest and I to do honest testimonials.
