Leading Transformational Small Groups (Even in a Pandemic) Aug 11, 2020
    Show notes

For the next two weeks, we've invited Dr. Angela Schaffner back to Woven. Next week, we will discuss mental health and the Pandemic. But, this week, we discuss her new book, Gather Us In: Leading Transformational Small Groups. While the way we gather, at church or otherwise, has changed significantly, our need for community has not. We all find ourselves in situations, whether in our families, our neighborhoods, at work, at school, at church, etc. where we are leading and engaging with small groups of people. How can these groups be arenas where true transformation and authentic community takes place? What are some tips for leading groups in new capacities, even for those of us who don't usually consider ourselves leaders? Angela helps us address these questions and more!

Don't forget to purchase and review her new book at the Amazon link above! Also, to learn more about Dr. Schaffner and her counseling practice, visit her website-http://angeladschaffner.com

Pandemic Parenting: Back to School? with Michelle Nietert Jul 28, 2020
    Show notes

This week we begin a new series called "Pandemic Parenting". Living during a global pandemic has definitely presented parents with new challenges. The one on the forefront of most parents' minds right now is the looming 2020-2021 school year. No matter what you choose for your children and their schooling this year, or if you've not been given a choice; we've all been thrown for a loop. No matter where you live, this new school year will look very different from years past. How do we as parent prepare ourselves and our kids for all the changes to come? What are the right decisions to make for our kids? How do we finish summer strong while we have so much anxiety for the fall?

To help us answer all these questions and more, we've invited Michelle Nietert to join us. As a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor, Michelle has been providing therapeutic interventions to children and their families in counseling offices for over 20 years. As a previous educator, public school crisis counselor, and youth and children's minister, she interacts regularly with parents and students at public school assemblies, PTA meetings, local churches, and is the mental health consultant for a local private Christian school. Michelle also provides trainings for school counselors, teachers and homeschool parents. A recognized expert in Solution Focused Therapy, she is the clinical director and owner of a large counseling center in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Michelle's writing can be found on the MOPS blog, in Lifeway's Parenting Magazine and she is the Mental Health columnist for Just Between Us Magazine. She also joins her audiences in the parenting trenches as a happily married mom of two school-aged children. To discover her Counselor Thoughts blog and podcast providing Solutions for Life, please visit MichelleNietert.com. She is also the co-author of the book Loved and Cherished, a devotional bool for girls ages 8-12, which releases on 9/8. Michelle also co-hosts the Raising Brave Beauties podcast with Lynn Cowell, co-author of Loved and Cherished.

Just Keep Swimming: Sustainable Activism with Jen Young Jul 21, 2020
    Show notes

This week we conclude our series we've called "Just Keep Swimming". We all find ourselves in the precarious, messy middle of this crazy year- 2020. Many of us find ourselves burned out, depressed, anxious, and uncertain about our future. We know we're called to push through despite all these emotions, but how? How do we remain faithful to Jesus when we can barely wake up and face a new day of social distancing? How do we find time for rest when we have to be constantly vigilant and entertaining to our children? How do we not burn out as we are being called to be consistent activists for social justice? Our prayer is that we can answer some of these questions and more in this series.

Today, Jen Young joins us to discuss sustainable activism. Not only are we in the middle of a global pandemic, we also find ourselves in the middle of a time where injustices have finally been brought to the surface. Many of us have joined the call to be activists and allies on many fronts. We here at Woven affirm those calls, but we also want to provide resources on how sustain quality activism that doesn't lead us to burn out. How can we incrementally create change, while not giving up and fizzling out? How can we join causes and fight for justice without our push being a flash in the pan? How can we rest and rejuvenate in order to continue soldiering on? How do we approach social media in a way that brings awareness with authenticity? All of these are hard questions, and we are thankful for Jen's wisdom in helping us find some of the answers.

Jen has a lot of experience in the area of sustainable activism. She is the executive director of Impact 46, a faith-based nonprofit in Lawrenceville, GA that builds partnerships with a purpose to transform Lawrenceville into a thriving place with thriving people. Show notes

This week we wrap up our political series with an episode on how to argue effectively, wisely and gracefully. We tackle 10 logical fallacies often used in discourse, and we discuss how we can argue more like Jesus. Arguments and discourse are inevitable, but our conversations can still be salt and light, even as we agree to disagree. We pray this episode, and this series, empower you to not shy away from the hard conversations of our time, but to lean into them confidently and winsomely.

    This Isn't A Political Issue: Part 2 (Poli-Sci 101) Jun 16, 2020
    Show notes

For Part 2 of our political series, we decided we all needed to return to Poli-Sci 101. Many times, in election years, we get into heated arguments about politics or fall into despair, forgetting basic facts about our government and political system. This week, Chris Cochran (Rebecca C's husband), joins Woven to re-educate us on topics such as the party system, checks and balances, how a bill becomes a law, and the electoral college. Chris holds a degree in political science and works in government administration. We pray that renewed knowledge will help us all to have not only graceful but also educated political conversations in our communities.
