Starting a CPG with an MVP–How the Best Brands Evolve With Elizabeth Stein, Founder and CEO, Purely Elizabeth Sep 08, 2021
    Show notes

“Start a natural foods company.” These were the words 2007 graduate Elizabeth Stein wrote down in class one day when her Integrative Nutrition teacher asked students to describe their “unpredictable future.” While she saw no clear path of how to get there, she knew one thing for certain: She wanted to help others eat better, feel better, and live better. Without any prior knowledge of starting a company – where to source ingredients or how to get a product on the shelf– Purely Elizabeth began. Elizabeth’s “unpredictable future” has since become a very impressive reality. The brand took the natural food world by storm and helped bring wellness into the mainstream. Today, Purely Elizabeth is one of the most significant natural food brands in the country, and a multi-million dollar company. Needless to say, I can’t wait to talk to Elizabeth to hear how she launched a successful CPG and strategized around opportunities and challenges within a rapidly growing market which, at the time, was still considered niche. Welcome to WorkParty, Elizabeth!

Content Creator to CEO: How to Turn a Blog into a Career With Rocky Barnes, Model, Influencer, and Entrepreneur Sep 01, 2021
    Show notes

With over 2 million followers, Rocky Barnes knows a thing or two about Instagram. But, believe it or not, the model slash style icon entered the influencer space well before the visually-driven social media platform was even "a thing." She got her big break back in 2012 when she starred in Justin Beiber’s “Boyfriend” music video and then quickly started gracing the pages of Vogue and Cosmopolitan and becoming the face of brands such as Sam Edelman, Furla, and Bare Minerals. But don’t call her an overnight success. She has been hustling for years to get where she is today. She launched her eponymous blog, Rocky Barnes, over eight years ago (a.k.a. during the digital stone ages) and has been slowly but surely amassing a loyal band of followers. Her wide reach on social media has opened up many doors, and she’s stepped into the role of designer, co-designing capsule collections with brands by the likes of Express and Aldo. And she’s even launched her own fashion brand, The Bright Side. I’m so excited to learn more about this incredible businesswoman so without further ado, please welcome Rocky Barnes! • Join the party on social @workparty and stay in-the-know at workparty.com.

The COVID Comeback: How the Restaurant Industry Rebounds With L.A.-Based Restaurateur Marissa Hermer Aug 25, 2021
    Show notes

No industry was hit harder by the COVID crisis than the restaurant industry. More than 110,000 restaurants closed last year, either temporarily or for good, and more than 2.5 million restaurant industry jobs disappeared. But, despite the devastating stats, restaurants have shown creativity and resilience throughout the pandemic, adapting to ever-changing mandates in order to keep both their patrons and staff safe. And Marissa Hermer’s establishments are no exception. The Los Angeles-based restaurateur and co-owner of the Boujis Group has successfully pivoted every step of the way, ensuring her restaurants, the Olivetta and The Draycott, not only survive but thrive. Needless to say, I’m so excited to chat with her today about how she’s seeing her restaurants through this challenging time and what she believes the future holds for the restaurant industry in 2021 and beyond. So, without further ado… Welcome to WorkParty, Marissa! • Join the party on social @workparty and stay in-the-know at workparty.com.

Thank You, Next! How to Start a Wildly Successful Second Business with Annie Lawless, Founder and CEO of Lawless Beauty Aug 18, 2021
    Show notes

Starting a business is no easy feat. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 20% of businesses fail by the first year, and 50% close by the fifth. So the odds of starting one successful business—let alone two—are stacked against you. But defying the odds is something that today’s WorkParty guest, Annie Lawless, knows a thing or two about. In 2012, Annie launched her first company, the cold-pressed juice brand Suja Juice, which she scaled into such a success that Coca-Cola and Goldman Sachs each bought multi-million-dollar stakes (!). And now her second business, the clean beauty brand Lawless Beauty, is on a similar trajectory. The band doubled its sales as of October 2020 and is on track to double its overall sales in 2021. Needless to say, I’m so excited that she's here today to chat about how she started a successful second business, how she formulated a strategic exit strategy from her first company, and so much more! Show notes

Going into business with a friend can be an incredible experience, but it can also be a real challenge. You need to ensure your values, goals, and work ethics align. So, how do you make it work with your bestie? How do you maintain healthy boundaries between being friends and being business partners? How do you navigate creative differences and make sure both of your opinions are heard? To talk about what it really takes to go into business with a friend, I have Shenae Grimes and AnnaLynne McCord here today to help answer those questions. Although Shenae and AnnaLynne played fictional best friends on the CW show “90210,” today, they’re real-life besties and co-hosts of the podcast “Unzipped” where they talk about everything from friendship and parenting to pop culture and social issues. I’m so excited to chat with these BFFs turned business partners all about what it’s like to navigate the friend-business-partner relationship, why they launched their podcast, and so much more. From Employee to Entrepreneur: How to Scale Your Side Hustle Into a Startup With Samara Walker, Founder and CEO of Àuda.B Aug 04, 2021
    Show notes

Side hustles are on the rise. According to a recent survey, as many as one in four Americans are planning on starting a side hustle in 2021. On top of the 34% of people who have already started a side hustle venture this year. But starting a side-hustle while working a 9-to-5 isn't easy. It takes determination, drive, and passion. Which is something that today’s WorkParty guest, Samara Walker, knows a thing or two about. Samara started the luxury nail polish brand Àuda.B while working full-time as a senior financial analyst at Amazon after noticing that women of color aren’t often represented within luxury beauty. And, thankfully, major retailers have taken notice, too. Earlier this year, Àuda.B launched at Nordstrom, becoming the first Black-owned polish brand to be sold by the retailer. (Which is incredible!) Needless to say, I can’t wait to talk to Samara all about how she went from full-time employee to full-time entrepreneur, and how she’s pushing the beauty industry forward in the process. How Perseverance Can Help You Pivot to New Possibilities With Small Business Owner, Ellen Marie Bennett Jul 28, 2021
    Show notes

It’s no secret that COVID-19 has challenged small businesses everywhere to rethink the brick-and-mortar business model. With physical retail locations closing and e-commerce on the rise, it's been crucial for small businesses to pivot to digital to weather the pandemic.

By the numbers: Online sales grew by nearly 50% at the peak of the pandemic, and experts are predicting the shift may be permanent. According to a recent survey, 41% of consumers are currently shopping via social media and 51% say they’ll continue to use in-app shopping post-COVID.

Bank of America recently released their yearly survey of small business owners in the 2021 Small Business Owner Report. Their research found that business owners have started to regain their footing as economic confidence, business revenue expectations, and hiring plans bounce back significantly from levels seen in the fall. For example, 50% of SBOs are confident the national economy will improve – up significantly from 37% last fall, and 60% expect their revenue to increase – up even more from 34% last fall.

To address the impact of the pandemic, business owners tapped into various funding sources to stay afloat and made operational changes that they anticipate will continue going forward. More than half of SBOs tapped into funding sources such as personal savings, business credit cards and PPP loans. A majority of SBOs anticipate that the operational changes they made in response to the coronavirus will continue beyond the pandemic – specifically enhancing their sanitation practices and further building a digital sales strategy.

Regardless, entrepreneurship is on the rise—and it doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Today, nearly 40% of the workforce is made up of freelancers, temps, independent contractors, and solopreneurs, and a growing number of millennials and Gen-Zers are becoming solopreneurs—61% of independent millennials are planning to stay independent as solopreneurs.

So, how do you successfully lead your business through COVID-19? How do you turn a seemingly insurmountable challenge into an opportunity? And how do you start planning for the “new normal” when the future is still unwritten?

Thankfully, we're joined by a particularly savvy business woman who can help answer all of these questions - welcome Ellen Marie Bennett!
Ellen is the founder and CEO of Hedley & Bennett, the leading Los Angeles based culinary workwear brand, and today they are known for more than just their aprons! They create culinary workwear, gear and outfits for over 6,000 restaurants, hotels, coffee shops, resorts and hundreds of thousands of home cooks all over the world. • Join the party on social @workparty and stay in-the-know at workparty.com.

Pivot, Pivot, Pivot! How to Identify New Opportunities and Capitalize on Them With Alana Branston and Ali Kriegsman, Co-Founders of Bulletin Jul 21, 2021
    Show notes

2020 was filled with unexpected challenges that most small business owners were unprepared for, requiring us to pivot and adapt to new, ever-changing realities. Now, after a year of quick pivots, it's time for us to identify and capitalize on new opportunities in 2021 with purpose, which is why I'm so excited for today's conversation with Alana Branston and Ali Kriegsman, the co-founders of the online wholesale platform Bulletin. It’s safe to say these two entrepreneurs know a thing or two about changing course. Since launching in 2015, they’ve pivoted their business several times, from a shoppable newsletter, to weekly pop-ups, to brick-and-mortar shops and now, to an online wholesale marketplace that has thrived during COVID. I’m so excited to talk to them today about how they’ve pivoted, identified and capitalized on new opportunities, secured venture capital funding to scale, and so much more. So, without further adieu . . .Welcome to WorkParty, Alana and Ali! • Join the party on social @workparty and stay in-the-know at workparty.com.

From Self-Made to Shelf Space: How to Scale a Business With Monique Rodriguez, Founder and CEO of Mielle Organics Jul 14, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome to a special episode of WorkParty Live from our Self-Care Summit with Monique Rodriguez, the founder and CEO of Mielle Organics. This founder knows a thing or two about scaling a business! In 2014, she started mixing up homemade haircare solutions in her kitchen. Now her brand has grown into a multi-million-dollar company with products sold in over 100,000 major retailers, including Target, Walgreens, and CVS. And, earlier this year, Monique secured a “significant investment” for Mielle Organics from Berkshire, which typically makes equity investments of $100 million to $1 billion in size. But it’s not just about turning a profit for Monique. She’s paying it forward with her More Than a Strand philanthropic initiative, which includes $200,000 in scholarships for HBCU students and $1 million for the brand’s Global Education and Entrepreneurship Program in partnership with Rutgers University and the Newark Business Hub. In this episode of WorkParty, Jaclyn chats with Monique about how she scaled her business from self-made to shelf space and how she’s paying it forward to fellow entrepreneurs along the way. • Join the party on social @workparty and stay in-the-know at workparty.com.

From Part-Time Groomer to Full-Time Entrepreneur: How Jess Rona Followed Parallel Paths to Build Her Dream Career Jul 07, 2021
    Show notes

How many times have you been told to “follow your passion?” It’s advice that pops up in graduation speeches, Instagram captions, and dozens of career articles. But following your passion is easier said than done. According to a recent Deloitte survey of 3,000 full-time U.S. workers, across job levels and industries, only 20% say they are truly passionate about their work. Thankfully, today's WorkParty guest knows a thing or two about how to follow a passion and turn it into a profitable business, and she's here to share her insights. Jess Rona has turned what was once a part-time career as a dog groomer into a full-fledged business complete with a celebrity client list, a coffee table book, and an HBO Max series. And it all started with a viral Instagram video. I can’t wait to talk with the actress, comedian, and celebrity dog groomer about how she turned her passion into dollars and cents. So, without further ado—welcome to WorkParty, Jess! • Join the party on social @workparty and stay in-the-know at workparty.com.
