This is one of the reasons she started her company Youthhype, to help disenfranchised youth have access to the same resources as other youth.

LaToya attributes her strength and tenacity to the example and teachings of her mother, who beat the odds and relocated her family to the suburbs in her early twenties. Seeing her mother set and achieve high goals helped LaToya to understand anything is possible. LaToya aims to achieve her goals by any means necessary, as her mentor Malcolm X proclaimed. Being guided by this principle gives her the resiliency needed to keep going when faced with opposition.

LaToya shared about her experiences with colorism growing up, and how this prolonged her journey in finding herself. Not feeling like you belong can deter you having an identity. Because of this LaToya makes sure she does not treat people this way, and is diligent in assessing her motives and intentions when interacting and responding to others. LaToya chooses to be compassionate and respectful as opposed to aggressive and combative in her dealings, as she has learned that this approach yields better results.

S6 E10: To Heal We Must Deal with Miriam Cruz May 12, 2020
    Show notes

Welcome to She Leads Podcast Season 6, Episode 10! This episode of She Leads Podcast features Miriam Cruz founder of Miriam Speaks. Miriam Cruz is a Life Coach, Motivational Speaker, and Self-love Advocate who leads her life like the Boss she is. To hear Miriam's leadership journey, check out her interview as she shares her experiences and insight with us!

    Miriam Cruz's Bio

Miriam Cruz was born in Mexico and came to the United States as an immigrant when she was four years old. She was born into poverty, and her early years were marked by violence and neglect in her home at the hands of her father. Miriam faced many challenges and obstacles in her life. She dropped out of high school, was in the juvenile justice system, and became a struggling single mother who suffered through postpartum depression.

How can someone overcome that sort of past and obstacles?

Miriam's extraordinary story of transforming her life after growing up in a violent household and becoming a struggling single mother is the inspiration behind her mission to teach others self-love, positive mindset, and forgiveness. Her resilience and drive have inspired many people to achieve their goals.

Miriam received a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. She has held several key roles in her community. She assisted programs for at-risk youth, hoping to impact their lives while providing resources to other programs. She worked at the YMCA of Silicon Valley where she assisted families in strengthening their relationships. Now, Miriam is a Supervisor at the Santa Clara County Courts. In that role, she leads others and empowers her team to be high performing professionals.

Miriam was determined to make a different life for herself. She wanted an education and a stable home. She wanted respect and love. She wanted to heal and find positive relationships. She wanted to make a decent living and be an independent woman. She wanted a happy life.

Miriam wants to share her message of learning to leave the past behind, forgiveness, daring to hope, and finding the inner strength to achieve dreams, no matter how large the obstacles may be in life. So, in 2019 Miriam started Just Breathe Coaching, a journey to help others heal. The six-week program helps the wounded heal and learn to love themselves again. She did it and wants to show others how to do it too.

Individuals that work with Miriam learn reliable strategies and techniques that promote the attainment of their aspirations. Their passion, personal development, and confidence is ignited.

Learn more about Miriam on her website: http://www.miriamspeaks.com

    Interview Highlights

After realizing she was suffering from postpartum depression, Miriam decided to seek therapy. Being diagnosed as depressed caused Miriam to take quick and radical action, which was doing extensive mindset work to change her circumstances. As a result of this Miriam created a 6-week program called Limitless to help others overcome like she was able to do.

Miriam is an advocate for facing issues head-on, and addressing what needs to be addressed so healing can occur. As Miriam emphasized, avoiding our feelings is not the answer. We must deal if we want to heal. Miriam discussed ways she tried to cope in the past, such as shopping which only helped for a short time. She did not see the changed she desired until she did the mindset work required. According to Miriam, a great way to shape our mind is to listen to positive messages via books, videos, and podcasts.

Miriam also mentioned the importance of investing in ourselves to grow. According to Miriam, we have to say yes to ourselves which means being committed to bettering ourselves and working toward our dreams. The most important thing we must do is keep searching until we find what we need to succeed.

The quote that gave Nicole permission to live her best life:

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others" - Marianne Williamson

TerDawn kept going until she found what was for her, and she was not afraid to pivot when necessary in her pursuit of greatness. TerDawn gave great advice to be "fluid like water" so we can keep up with the constant changes we experience.

TerDawn experienced many adversities growing up, which could have stagnated her growth and dampened her desire for more; however, she used these experiences for the exact opposite. TerDawn developed a "go get it" spirit as a teenager to care for her daughter she had at 17 years old. TerDawn also learned how to stand up for herself and find her own voice after being taken advantage of several times in her youth. TerDawn was on the verse of committing suicide, before realizing that her life was worth living and exemplifying her ability to overcome.

TerDawn attributes her success to discovering her purpose and finding a tribe of people who love and support her. Instead of breaking down, TerDawn experienced her breakthrough which lead her to a transformational journey of discovery. She was able to change her habits, and remove herself from the vicious cycle of behaviors that kept her in the same place year after year. TerDawn came into alignment with herself, increased her profits, and now lives a life of freedom.

    Interview Highlights

For 10 years of her life, Barbara worked tirelessly for her job until one day she was unexpectedly laid off. This sudden changed devastated Barbara, taking her 5 years to recover from the disappointment of being let go after working so hard. With newly found strength Barbara now sees the blessing that is a result of this change, because she created I Am This Women. If Barbara did not get laid off years ago, then I Am This Woman would not exist.

Barbara's childhood was a bit different from most, as she was raised primarily by her father. She shares how this experience shaped her life and outlook. Barbara lived 16 years of her youth without seeing her mother, which had both positive and negative effects on her. Unfortunately, she was left wondering if something was wrong with her or did she do anything to cause her mother to leave. Alternatively, Barbara used this experience to inspire her to be the best mother she could be for her son because she never wanted him to feel the pain she endured.

Barbara emphasized the importance of surrounding ourselves with people that will build us up and support us the way we need to be supported. It is important to evaluate who we have in our lives to determine if they should stay or if it is time for them to go, and be mindful of who we invite into our lives as well. Consider the people you surround yourself with as your circle. Everyone will not fit into your circle and some people who are present do not belong there.

Barbara has pledged to live a committed life, being influenced by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Her favorite quote is "Be the change you wish to see in the world" by Mahatma Gandhi and she shares the origin of this saying which has been changed over the years. Barbara has such a positive outlook on life and she encourages everyone to find things to be grateful for because life is a gift that we should embrace.
