Why the World is Not Safe or Kind to Women Tho Sep 26, 2019
    Show notes

From catcalls to comments about our weight, height or hair, to someone suggesting we might be on our period if we're having a difficult day, to people talking behind our backs, to abuse and more, women know what it means to fight through challenging experiences. ON. THE. DAILY. Sometimes, we're fatigued, depressed, bone-tired, and irritable because we don't realize how much we deal with regularly, how much we have to stuff down to keep going. BUT WE MUST, and it's okay to take a time out to actually acknowledge what we've gone through, and might currently be going through, so that we stop wearing a mask of perfectionism (and expecting others to be perfect as well), and begin to restore joy, energy and rest to our souls, and our relationships. The world may not be safe or kind to women tho, but we are clinging to grace and goodness, and we are determined to help each other hold on to hope. This episode was inspired by Ashley's new book, Rise of the Truth Teller, chapter 8, The Truth about Aggression. Preorder today, which is the best thing you can do for an author, and gain access to incredible bonuses (video bundle, 20% off at Horacio Printing, digital wallpaper bundle, and more). Why Bless Her Heart is Not a Blessing Tho Sep 19, 2019
    Show notes

If anyone ever says, "Bless your little heart", and you have the courage to ask them what they mean, you will regret it. This is not a blessing. Trust us. Somebody is really looking for the opportunity to tell you something about yourself that you don't want to hear (or they are going to say it behind your back). Sometimes, truth telling about OTHERS is easier than telling the truth about OURSELVES. But if we want to see personal growth in our lives, then it's time to start getting honest about our own lives. The power is in the telling, and the living. Speaking of telling, WE ARE TELLING YOU ITS OUR BIRTHDAY, WHY THO LISTENER!! And yes we absolutely did sing Stevie Wonder's version of Happy Birthday and it is terrible. It will likely burst your eardrums, but we are loud and proud about 52 episodes under our belt, and we are GRATEFUL FOR YOU! We're giving away Ashley and Tiffany's new books, and a Why Tho mug just for one of our dear listeners, so sign-up here, and have a shot at winning a present on our birthday! https://mailchi.mp/7c2e04ec8183/whythofirstbirthday We'll announce the winner on 9/25/19, and can't wait to mail one of you goodies from the Why Tho Gals! Why the Bible is a Book for Foodies Tho Sep 12, 2019
    Show notes

Food is for sure one of our love languages, and we have discovered that the Bible is actually a book for foodies. From Jael, to Esther, to four teenage boys kidnapped and enslaved in Babylon, to a miracle of water to wine at a wedding, to Jesus at the last supper. The story of humanity starts with an apple, and finishes with an incredible, Pinterest worthy, redemptive, banquet feast. There's a spiritual element to gathering at the table, where we are leveled, and the potential for vulnerability, and even exposure, increases. Freedom, justice, miracles, courage, and gumption can all be nurtured at the table. It's no wonder that so many of us struggle (or have struggled) with body image issues, diet culture, and eating disorders - because so much goodness is possible at the table. Dear listener, you are going to LOVE this conversation, so share it with a friend. This episode was inspired by chapter 7 of Ashley's new book, Rise of the Truth Teller. Preorder today, and gain access to incredible bonuses (video bundle, 20% off at Horacio Printing, digital wallpaper bundle, and more). Why Forgiveness is My Other Favorite F Word Tho Sep 05, 2019
    Show notes

Forgiveness is one of our favorite F-words. Forgiveness leads to wholeness and that is what makes it so powerful. We're fragmented when we choose to remain stuck in our hurts and wounds. We become suspicious of others, and we struggle to move forward in health and strength in the big offenses. Especially in our closest relationships. We make vows that hinder our purpose, and lead to greater isolation and loneliness (I will never let this type of person hurt me again; I will never commit to intimacy again; I will never risk my heart in relationship again because I fear rejection or abandonment; I will always hate myself for what I've done, or what has been done to me; etc, etc.). It can be hard to be honest and to enjoy ourselves and others, but forgiveness can unlock freedom and breed trust and safety in relationships. Can you imagine if the Christian witness was a big fat I'M SORRY, instead of the prideful, I'M RIGHT AND YOU'RE WRONG, that we see so often in the media? We think more people would see the great love and companionship God intended for us to experience. In this episode, learn to let go, and understand the power of forgiveness. This episode was inspired by Ashley's new book, Rise of the Truth Teller. To learn what Ashley's other favorite F-word used to be, preorder her book, and gain access to incredible bonuses (video bundle, 20% off at Horacio Printing, digital wallpaper bundle, and more). Why the Truth Tellers Need to Rise Tho Aug 29, 2019
    Show notes

READY FOR AN EAR SNACK? Good, because on this episode we have Ashley reading the first chapter of her new book, Rise of the Truth Teller, FOR FREE for our Why Tho podcast listeners. In her first book, she shares her personal story of overcoming addiction, rape, abortion, dysfunctional relationships, and speaks to relevant topics of our day, such as gender roles, sexual assault, rural poverty in America, race and the criminal justice system. Rise of the Truth Teller is available for preorder in paperback, kindle and audio (digital and CD) NOW. We hope you feel empowered to inspire others to own their story, tell it like it is, and live with holy gumption. We believe in the power of a story, and are convinced that we are living in an unprecedented time, when we need the truth tellers to rise. We need space to be our whole selves, and then courage to create safe space for others to do the same. Your story matters, and we need what you bring to our world. Why Common Sense is Not That Common Tho Aug 15, 2019
    Show notes

Wanna know our beef with 2019? Common sense is not that common tho. Like, aren't there some things we should all know are unacceptable in society? For example: Don't say every old thought that comes into your head. Don't do every dumb thing you feel like doing. From the smallest uses of language, to the social tact that helps us read a room, to the refusal to pick a side and be a hater... We need some common sense and basic human decency. (Can we get an Amen?) Also, we are distraught over the fact that bulletproof backpacks are being purchased in 2019 as a new school year begins. There has to be a better way, and while some people like to fight from one side of the fence, and shout about how the other side is wrong, how about we be the people in the middle, healing and helping with the collateral damage, from the arguing of people who are too smart for their own doggone good. Why Books Are Food For Your Brain Tho Aug 08, 2019
    Show notes

The science is there (but you'll have to google it): reading may stave off Alzheimers, aids us in quest for empathy, provides the brain with necessary food to function, and gives us something to talk about at the dinner table, or at awkward parties when meeting strangers. Books make the world go round, which is probably why dictators burn them. Words are powerful, life giving and life changing (unless you're a dictator, where the opposite is true). From the book Night to Jesus Feminist, to Barbara Brown Taylor and Brother Lawrence, we've got the goods, and we want to share it all with you. What are you reading? Share with us, so we can add them to our Summer Reads! Thanks for listening! Did you know we created FREE Why Tho video resources just for you?
