Author Maureen Boyle on The Women of New Bedford, Mass. Apr 02, 2021
    Show notes

From https://shallowgravesthebook.com/: The women were dead before anyone realized they were gone. It was 1988, before the opiate epidemic of the 2000s, before families openly talked about heroin addicts, before there was a public face to the addiction. At the time, as many still do today, young women in the throes of addiction turned to street hustles to find money for drugs. They would write bad checks, shoplift and some, as the addiction worsened, turned to conning men into giving them money. Some turned to prostitution. The addicts lived on the outer edges. In a small city like New Bedford, people recognized them on the street. Many knew their families. New Bedford is a tight knit city with large, close families. It is also a fishing community where people know death can come unexpectedly on the seas. But no one expected what happened in 1988. Eleven women went missing that year. Nine were later found dead along local highways surrounding the city. It is officially unsolved. I was a reporter at the Standard-Times of New Bedford, Massachusetts, at the time. I knew some of the women who were on the streets at the time, struggling with addictions. They were good people. Some of them are still alive, finally kicking their habits. Many are now dead. Some of AIDS, some from overdoses, a few from natural causes. Some of the women got clean before they died, giving their families – and children – the gift of knowing their true spirit. I have been haunted by the story of these dead women for years. Their families have lived with the pain each day. No one should get away with murder. Shallow Graves: The Hunt for the New Bedford Highway Serial Killer (ForeEdge) tells the story of the investigation through the eyes of the investigators and some of the families. We hope someone will finally end that hunt. - Maureen Boyle If you'd like to contribute to keeping these shows running you can do so by clicking on the following link: paypal.me/williamhuffman3 or via Venmo with my username @bill-huffman-3.

Source: Toronto Sun "Thirteen months was how long his reign of terror lasted. The tally was 11 dead women, all snatched off the streets of hardscrabble fishing town New Bedford, Massachusetts. More women were raped. And then the murders suddenly stopped. Between March 1988 and April 1989, a serial killer was preying on the city of 95,000 sex workers, nearly all of whom struggled with drug addiction." Thank you for listening to the Eastbound Strangler and thanks to this week's sponsor betterhelp.com. Source: Atlantic City Prosecutor's Office THE CASE: On November 20, 2006 the four victims were found in the drainage ditch behind the Golden Key Motel in West Atlantic City (Egg Harbor Township). The drainage ditch contains fresh water run-off and is also tidal measuring five feet deep and ten feet across. It runs parallel with Route 322. Kim Raffo was the first victim discovered when her body was located by two women out for a walk. They were walking along a path that ran parallel to the drainage ditch. After 911 was contacted and uniformed officers arrived, three more female bodies were discovered as officers searched along the path for additional evidence. The ACPO Major Crimes Unit arrived and the crime scene area was secured. The bodies were recovered during the evening hours and the scene remained secured until daybreak on November 21, 2006. The area from which the bodies were recovered was searched east to the bridge and west for approximately one mile between Route 322 and the Atlantic City Expressway. Thank you to this week's sponsor, Best Fiends. https://bestfiends.com/ From Atlantic City Prosecutor's Office: "Prosecutor Tyner said law enforcement needs the public’s help as the investigation continues 12 years later. “Somebody knows something about this case. Somebody has to know something,” Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner says of the discovery on Nov. 20, 2006, of the bodies of Kim Raffo, Molly Dilts, Barbara Breidor and Tracy Roberts that were dumped in a drainage ditch in West Atlantic City. “At the end of the day, Kim Raffo, Molly Dilts, Barbara Breidor and Tracy Roberts were someone’s mother, daughter, sister, and wife. And I shudder to characterize them as four prostitutes whose bodies were found because it’s not about that. Instead, I say these were four women who were found dead in West Atlantic City on Nov. 20, 2006. They will not be forgotten,” Prosecutor Tyner said." The Delphi Police Department, the Carroll County Sheriff, the Indiana State Police, and the FBI are asking for your assistance in identifying the suspect in the double homicide of two teenage girls, Abigail J. "Abby" Williams, 13, and Liberty Rose Lynn "Libby" German, 14, both from Delphi. On Monday, February 13th, at approximately 1:00 p.m., the two young girls were let off near the Monon High Bridge, an abandoned rail bridge over Deer Creek to walk around and hang out. They were to be picked up later in the afternoon, but did not show up there at the previously arranged time. Following an extensive search, at approximately 12:15 p.m. on February 14, 2017, the bodies of the two girls were found in a wooded area near the Delphi Historic Trail, approximately one-half mile upstream from the bridge. The case is still unsolved so please visit this website below to submit tips. Thank you to this week's sponsor, Best Fiends. Download & play at the Apple App Store or Google Play. As News5 in Cleveland released an "Exclusive" story about the state of the Amy Mihaljevic case. The story seems credible but I have some questions about the validity to some parts of the report. Monday was the 31st Anniversary of when Amy's body was discovered so the timing is questionable... Since I was inundated with questions about this "report" I asked my good buddy Nic from the True Crime Garage podcast to be my guest this week to bounce some of the questions I have off of him. Join us for our latest thoughts on Who Killed Amy Mihaljevic? TIPS: 440-871-1234 or 1-800-CALL-FBI Help Support the show by visiting https://www.sloburnmedia.com and click the DONATE button.

As we bid farewell to the wonderful decade that was the eighties, we felt like we were entering a new stage in our lives. 1990 was going to be a brand new year and while the search was still ongoing for 10-year-old Amy Renee Mihaljevic we as kids had to begin to move on. The stories on the news became less sporadic as each day passed. With each holiday or birthday the media would trot out to Bay Village to interview the Mihaljevic family and see how they were dealing with their missing daughter.
