Episode 7: There are more of them (Fantastic Four #3, part 1) -- March 1962 Apr 05, 2021
    Show notes

    In this episode:

Mike and Ed discuss the ramifications of a new super-powered individual. How many more are there? Is the Fantastic Four our protection against others of their kind? Is this an acceptable trade-off? How long is the Fantastic Four’s leash?

    In the actual comic:

The Fantastic Four are popular celebrities, and they are enjoying their status. They fly across town in their Fantasticar to take in a show by the Miracle Man, a performer who demonstrates amazing powers for the crowd - he can change size at will, turn into gas, shoot lightning from his fingertips, and take on the Thing. The Four do not know what to make of him as they fly home over the city (sidebar: when will get flying cars?)

The Miracle Man then, strangely, declares war on the human race, and the Four are called into action. They fight a giant monster that the Miracel Man has brought to life, and then take the fight to the Man himself, who snuffs the Torch’s fire out with chemical foam and causes the earth to swallow the Thing.

Reed thinks hard about the problem, but does not do anything. Meanwhile, the Invisible Girl locates the Miracle Man, but before she can alert her teammates, she is hypnotized by the Miracle Man. He has Sue signal the rest of the team (maybe he should have just waited for Sue to do it before he hypnotized her), and when they arrive, they battle. The Fantastic Four gains the upper hand when the temporarily blind the Miracle Man. Reed then lets everyone know that he figured out that the Miracle Man did not have any magic powers - he was merely a clever hypnotist, and a master of mass illusion.

We can think of many other ways the Miracle Man could have used his incredible, but not magical or miraculous, powers than picking a fight with super-powered heroes, but that is neither here nor there.

In any event, Johnny Storm is unhappy with how he has been treated by his teammates (he is a teenager and a bit of a sulk), and quits the team.

    Assumed before the next episode:

The public is still fascinated by the Fantastic Four, and are likely digesting the ongoing news that super-powered heroes and villains are becoming a daily fact of life.

    This episode takes place:

Just after the events of this issue, i.e. the Fantastic Four have taken down the Miracle Man, and the Torch has quit the team.

    Episode 6: Zero to Hero (Fantastic Four #2, part 3) -- February 1962 Apr 02, 2021
    Show notes

    In this episode:

    * Mike and Ed discuss the Fantastic Four’s crime spree and escape from prison being ignored. What is going on behind the scenes that we are not being informed about? How is this acceptable?

    In This Issue:

The Skrulls, an alien race with the ability to change their shapes, decide to invade the Earth, but before they do, they decide to eliminate the threat posed by the Fantastic Four. They begin by impersonating the team and making it appear that they are committing crimes, with the “Invisible Woman” stealing a diamond, the “Human Torch” melting a monument, the “Thing” destroying an oil platform, and “Mr. Fantastic" turning off the power for all of New York. The world turns against the team, driving them into hiding. The military finds the team and takes them into custody.

The Four escape their “superhero proof cells”, and set about solving the Skrull problem. They draw the Skrulls out by committing another crime (the Human Torch destroys a rocket as it is launching), and the Skrulls are fooled into thinking the Torch is one of them. The Fantastic Four proceeds to capture the Skrulls, and then turn the tables on them by impersonating the Skrulls and travelling into space to meet the Skrull invasion force. Reed convinces the invading Skrulls that the Earth is too dangerous to invade. He agrees (while still pretending to be a Skrull) to stay behind to monitor the situation. The Skrulls are convinced, abandon their plans, and leave Earth.

The Four return to Earth and explain everything to the authorities, who believe their story but decide to cover up the foiled Skrull invasion to the public. Reed then hypnotizes the remaining Skrulls into believing that they are cows, and they are set out to pasture (an amoral decision made by Reed; a not uncommon deficit to be repeated in the years to come).

    Assumed before the next episode:

The public is told that the Fantastic Four are not at fault for the earlier attacks, but they are not told why. They are also not told how close they came to being conquered by shapeshifting aliens.

    This episode takes place:

About a month after the foiled alien invasion (perhaps the first Secret Invasion?) and the rollercoaster back and forth of the public being in love with the Fantastic Four, out of love with them, and then in love with them again.

    Episode 3: Nothing Happens (Fantastic Four #1, Part 3) -- December 1961 Mar 29, 2021
    Show notes

    In this issue:

Reed Richards, his fiancee Sue Storm, Sue’s kid brother Johnny Storm, and their friend Ben Grimm, steal a spaceship that Reed has been working on for the military to fly into space in an attempt to help America get ahead of the U.S.S.R. in the space race. Unfortunately, the spaceship has insufficient shielding from the cosmic rays in space, and after the crash land, the four learn that they have been mutated by the cosmic rays, and have developed incredible powers: Reed can stretch, Sue can turn invisible, Johnny can light himself on fire and fly, and Ben has been horribly disfigured into a super strong orange monster.

Meanwhile, atomic power plants around the world are disappearing, and no one can figure out why. Reed determines that the culprits are striking out from an island most thought was a myth, “Monster Isle”. He signals his friends with a flare in the sky. When they see the flare, the team rushes to meet Reed, causing a commotion in the city. Sue Storm, the Invisible Girl, knocks people down in the street, and sneaks into a taxi cab. Ben Grimm, the Thing, busts out of a building into the street, whereupon he is attacked by the police and rips through the asphalt to escape. Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, melts a car and takes to the sky, leading to the military scrambling jets to attack the Torch, who proceeds to melt the aircraft. And Reed Richards, Mr. Fantastic, rescues the Torch by extending his long arms to grab the atomic missile that the military has fired at the Torch, throwing the missile out to the sea.

The team travels to Monster Isle and confronts the ruler of this island, the Mole Man. He is a misfit who made his way underground for a better life and discovered that monsters exist and that he can become their master. The Mole Man’s plan was to cripple society by having his monsters destroy the world’s atomic plants. The Four defeat the Mole Man, with the Human Torch sealing them into the earth below. The Mole Man then blows up Monster Isle as the Fantastic Four make their escape from the island.

    Assumed before the next episode:

We are still discussing the ramifications of Reed’s press conference, which includes the disclosure of super-powered individuals (the Fantastic Four), monsters (under the thrall of the Mole Man), and how the Fantastic Four has solved the mystery of the disappearing atomic plants.

Nothing else of note happens until Fantastic Four #2, which takes place in January 1962.

    This episode takes place:

A few weeks after the press conference and before Fantastic Four #2. It is notable that the Cold War is heating up at this time, which appears to motivate and influence our heroes (and drive their antagonists).

    Promotion Episode: Super Serious 616 (Strange Tales #89) -- October 1961 Mar 23, 2021
    Show notes

    What is this all about?

    * Super Serious 616 is a podcast that asks, “What would it be like to live through the introduction to the Marvel Universe as it was happening?”

    * The show begins with “Episode One” in November 1961, with the introduction of the Fantastic Four.

    * This is the “promotion spot” for that show. It was recorded in October 1961, before the Fantastic Four reveal themselves to the world (But there have still been some weird things going on in this world that is otherwise a lot like our own).

    * We will drop a few episodes all at once next week, and then move into a 3x/week regular cadence. Until then, enjoy this teaser…

    In This Issue:

    * Fin Fang Foom, an ancient dragon sealed away for centuries, was released in China.

    * After being taunted by the man who released him, the dragon goes on a rampage that causes havoc on Chinese forces attempting to invade (what appears to be) Taiwan.

    * By the end of the issue Fin Fang Foom is re-sealed in his tomb.

    Assumed before the next issue:

    * In Fantastic Four #1 (November 1961), it is revealed that the Mole Man has been causing atomic power plants around the world to sink into the ground. It is suggested these attacks have been going on for some time. We assume these events have taken place before the recording of this episode.

    This Episode takes place:

After the dragon and Mole Man attacks, but before any thing else from Fantastic Four #1.
