I cannot express what this show means to me, what a joy it was to make and how excited I am for you all to hear it. This episode, I should mention, features, along with Molly Quinn, Lusia Strus, and TL Thompson, the voice of James Urbaniak, which you might recognize as Leonard Burton from Night Vale, or Dr. Venture from Venture Brothers, among many other roles.

All twelve episodes of the first season are available right now only on Audible. There is a free trial, so please do use that to listen to it at audible.com/unlicensed.

Unlicensed Ep 2 - Lost Boy Found Nov 17, 2022

Unlicensed, the new show by me, Joseph, and my Night Vale co-creator Jeffrey Cranor has been out for a week. Thank you to everyone who listened.

We are presenting today the second episode “Lost Boy Found”, in its entirety. We didn’t write this series alone, by the way, we brought in some of our best Night Vale guest writers, including Brie Williams and Glen David Gold. This episode was written by Brie and it introduces the case that will become the main story for this season. And you might notice, along with the voices of Molly Quinn, Lusia Strus, and TL Thompson, the voice of Dana on Night Vale and Keisha on Alice Isn’t Dead, Jasika Nicole.

All twelve episodes of the first season are available right now only on Audible. There is a free trial, so please do use that to listen to it at audible.com/unlicensed.

Unlicensed Ep 1 - The Detective of Citrus Ave Nov 10, 2022

Today we are proud to present the first fiction podcast created by me, Joseph Fink, and my Night Vale co-creator Jeffrey Cranor since Welcome to Night Vale. It is called Unlicensed and we are about to play you the first episode. This is a project that is very close to my heart, and one that we have been working on for years.

All twelve episodes of the first season are available right now only on Audible. There is a free trial, so feel free to use that to listen to it at audible.com/unlicensed.

That said, I have spent the last two years listening to Audible Originals and here are a few personal recommendations if you want to keep exploring once you’re there:

Hot White Heist - A very queer, very funny heist story that’s premise is too explicit for me to say here. Featuring more celebrity voices than I can list, it’s the kind of show where Tony Kushner shows up as himself to give a 5 minute monologue on how he thinks the story is going so far.

I Will Never Lie to You - A 70s road trip written by Brie Williams, frequent Night Vale writer and also writer on Unlicensed, along with James Urbaniak, of Venture Brothers and Night Vale, who also stars in it. A funny and sweet two hours of your time.

Romance Road Test - Two real Brooklyn women and their real husbands try out real romantic advice in their relationships and record what happens. Everyone involved is candid and charming, and it’s a lot of fun. I listened to this one in the car with my wife.

Hear all episodes of Unlicensed and a bunch of other cool shows at audible.com/unlicensed.

From the creators of Welcome to Night Vale: Unlicensed Oct 20, 2022

From Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor, creators of the genre defining fiction podcast Welcome to Night Vale, comes the new LA noire Unlicensed, starring Molly Quinn, Lusia Strus, and T.L Thompson.

Coming November 10, only to Audible. Subscribe now here: https://www.audible.com/Unlicensed

Unlicensed follows Molly Hatch (Quinn), recently divorced, two years sober, and completely lost on where to go next in her life. On a whim she answers an ad for an assistant to a PI, traveling to an unpromising strip mall on Citrus Avenue in Azusa, CA, where she meets Lou Rosen (Strus). Lou is a brilliant detective, but she’s also a completely disorganized mess, both in her physical space and within her own mind. She loses evidence, forgets what she’s already figured out, and she hasn’t even gotten it together to get her PI license.

Working illegally in the outskirts of Los Angeles, where the cul-de-sacs and strip malls sprawl into the desert, the only clients she can get are those who either can't afford anyone else or have cases that are too marginal for licensed PIs or the police to bother with.

When a teenage girl pleads for Lou and Molly to take the strangest case of their career, they find themselves involved in something much bigger than they were prepared for. This unlikely pair, with no resources and no back-up, follow a trail of seemingly unconnected cases, which leads them to a ransom, a murder, a mysterious wellness center, and a conspiracy that might go all the way to the governor.

Featuring guest appearances by Jason Segel, Janet Varney, James Urbaniak, Cecil Baldwin, Jasika Nicole, Mara Wilson, and more, Unlicensed is a deeply-human, captivating thriller set in the most uncool neighborhoods of America’s coolest city.

The First Ten Years: Two Sides of the Same Love Story Jan 28, 2021

Joseph and Meg are here to tell you about their new memoir that they co-wrote called The First Ten Years: Two Sides of the Same Love Story. It’s a memoir about being two kids in love, and then suddenly having a touring live show based on a weird fiction podcast and traveling around the world together.

You can pre-order it now! Just go to tinyurl.com/firsttenyears or wherever you get your books.

Here’s the official synopsis if you want more info:

A sometimes hilarious, occasionally heartbreaking, and always entertaining joint memoir by Joseph Fink, cocreator of Welcome to Night Vale, and his wife, writer and performer Meg Bashwiner, chronicling the first ten years of their relationship from both sides.

In 2009, 22-year-old Joseph Fink, newly arrived to New York City from the West Coast, was juggling odd jobs to pay the rent and volunteering with a theater company in the East Village so he could snag free tickets to their shows.

Meg Bashwiner, a 22-year-old aspiring performer and playwright, was living with her parents in New Jersey, working a desk job and commuting to her internship with that same East Village theater company.

Joseph and Meg's stories meet when they both find themselves selling tickets in a cramped box office. They quickly became friends. Within a year, they were a couple. Within five years they were touring the world, performing on some of the world's greatest and not so great stages.

In this candid, soul-baring memoir, Joseph and Meg recount their first ten years together, each telling their story as they remember it, without having consulted the other. We hear both sides of their first kiss, first breakup, first getting back together, the death of a father, marriage, international fame, world tours, mental illness, and discussions about having children. Sometimes, they recall things differently—neither agrees on who paid for the morning after pill on their first date. Sometimes they remember the exact same details in the same way—but still have their own narrative on just what those details mean.

Poignant, funny, and real, alternately told in Joseph and Meg’s remarkably different, yet equally compelling voices, The First Ten Years is the story of two individuals finding their way in the world and becoming "adults" as they learn to become a couple.

Start With This: Idea to Execution Mar 25, 2019

A brand new podcast from Night Vale Presents, and the first podcast Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor have made together since Welcome to Night Vale: Start With This, a podcast gone creativity playground designed to put your ideas in motion. Each episode centers around a topic from world building, to opening lines, and even failure. Then they give listeners two short assignments: something to consume and something to create. The best way to start writing is to start writing. Not sure where to begin? Start With This.

To keep listening to Start With This, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your favorite podcast app.

There’s natural talent, and then there’s practice. You can only control that last bit. Joseph and Jeffrey talk building habits of creation so that starting projects gets into your muscle memory.

    Consume:

Check out Jonathan Mann’s Song A Day Youtube channel. Jonathan’s been writing and recording a song a day for over 3,000 days— it’s the ultimate example of flexing the habit of creation.

    Create:

Pick an idea that you’ve had for a while. Take exactly 1 hour to work on it exclusively. This can be one continuous hour, or 30 minutes for two days, or 10 minutes for six days. Then put it out there (written or recorded) on our Membership Community, your website, or shout it to a bird from your porch. Consider this your first try of many at this idea.

The Summer of Night Vale Presents, Part 4 Jul 27, 2018

Welcome to the fourth and final week of the Summer of Night Vale Presents, a celebration and sampling of some of the shows across our network. This week, hear previews of two upcoming Night Vale Presents shows, and full episodes from The Orbiting Human Circus (of the Air) and Good Morning Night Vale.

To get updates on our new shows, Adventures in New America and Dreamboy, sign up for the Night Vale Presents newsletter, or follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

The Orbiting Human Circus (of the Air) is a surreal and funny audio drama about a lonely janitor at the Eiffel Tower who longs to be part of the most popular radio show in the world. Recently, we re-issued the first season in partnership with WNYC. This special edition has brand new behind-the-scenes commentary in every episode and a director’s cut of the season finale, and is the perfect excuse to either re-listen or dive in for the very first time.

Good Morning Night Vale is the official Welcome to Night Vale recap show, hosted by cast members Meg Bashwiner, Symphony Sanders, and Hal Lublin. Each week, our hosts do a deep dive into one episode of Welcome to Night Vale, starting with the very first episode from 2012. Tune in for behind-the-scenes stories, interviews with the cast and creators, fan theories, and THROAT SPIDERS.

The Summer of Night Vale Presents, Part 3 Jul 20, 2018

This is the Summer of Night Vale Presents, a celebration and sampling of some of the shows across our network. This week, we’re listening to special episodes of Alice Isn’t Dead and Sleep With Me.
Alice Isn’t Dead is about a truck driver, played by Jasika Nicole, who searches across America for the wife she had long assumed was dead. In the course of her search, she encounters not-quite-human serial murderers, towns literally lost in time, and a conspiracy that goes way beyond one missing woman. We’re in the middle of the third and final season right now, and it would only take a few hours for you to catch up the finale later this summer.
Sleep With Me is the podcast that puts you to sleep. Every episode of this unique and inventive storytelling podcast is designed to help you fall asleep. The next time you’re tossing and turning at night, turn on one of the hundreds of episodes in the Sleep With Me archive and let Scooter tell you a bedtime story.

The Summer of Night Vale Presents, Part 2 Jul 13, 2018

This is the Summer of Night Vale Presents, a celebration and sampling of some of the shows across our network. This week, we hear from two of our newest fiction shows, Pounded In The Butt By My Own Podcast and It Makes A Sound. Plus, an update on Within the Wires Season 3.

Within the Wires returns on September 4. Each season tells a new story in the same world, using a single set of found audio. Season One is a prison break / romance told entirely through relaxation tapes. Season Two is the mystery of a missing woman told through a decade’s worth of museum audio guides. Season Three, coming this September, is a political thriller told through dictaphone recordings to a secretary.

Pounded In The Butt By My Own Podcast is our collaboration with celebrated author Chuck Tingle. Chuck’s short stories have entertained and aroused readers across the world, and we are excited to bring his stories to life with performances by celebrity guests like Cecil Baldwin, Mara Wilson, and Becca Blackwell. Whether you’re new to the Tingleverse or have lived there for years, this is the podcast about love that you never knew you needed.
It Makes A Sound is the story of a woman named Deirdre who finds a cassette tape from 1992 in her attic. What follows is a surprising story about family, memory, and music that goes places that you don’t expect. Join her quest to make Rosemary Hills come back to life with the sound of music.

Find out more about these shows, and all of the shows on our network, by visiting nightvalepresents.com.

The Summer of Night Vale Presents, Part 1 Jul 06, 2018

Welcome to the Summer of Night Vale Presents, a celebration and sampling of some of the shows across our network. This week: a look at two of our non-fiction shows, I Only Listen to the Mountain Goats and Conversations with People Who Hate Me.

I Only Listen to the Mountain Goats is a show about what it means to be an artist, to be a fan, and as many people are, both at once. Our first season found Welcome to Night Vale creator Joseph Fink in conversation with John Darnielle, singer and songwriter of the Mountain Goats, about their album All Hail West Texas. You’ll hear an excerpt from episode 9, “The Mess Inside,” which shows how these conversations wander through topics in unexpected ways.
Conversations with People Who Hate Me is a show where Dylan Marron, whom you may know as Carlos the Scientist on Welcome to Night Vale, takes contentious online conversations and moves them offline. This year, Dylan has been moderating conversations between people who have exchanged their own online negativity. You’ll hear the entirety of episode 12, “Burned at the Stake,” featuring a woman who wrote about why the TV show The Office doesn’t hold up to today’s standards and a man who told her she should be burned at the stake.

Find out more about these shows, and all of the shows on our network, by visiting nightvalepresents.com.
