168: Trust Score: Is Apple SPYING on our calls and messages? Sep 26, 2018

Show notes

Apple recently updated iTunes and some of the language contained in the new policy, revolving around a Trust Score generated by the data on your iPhone or iPad, sent a part of the internet into sensationalize-first, ask questions later mode. You know, like normal.

So, what exactly is going on here?

167: OMG the iPhone XR Display is...?! Sep 25, 2018

Show notes

So, there's been some confusion over the last few days about iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR specs.

Part of that is Apple's fault because, unlike screen density and storage capacity, they don't list RAM and battery capacity. And part of it is the fault of broken-internet, which, like broken telephone, passes along information often without context or clarity, resulting in it getting warped and distorted in a way that's significantly less than helpful.

Let's clear that up.

166: iPhone XS + Max Review Sep 21, 2018

Show notes

iPhone XS isn't an all-new iPhone. It's a new iPhone X. So, what does that mean?

I don't think Apple intends iPhone X owners to rush out and upgrade to iPhone XS, industry insiders, tech enthusiasts, and those on yearly programs, will of course do just that. Rather, I think Apple intends these new models to appeal to those who didn't yet make the leap to an all-new iPhone. Those who always avoid rev. A boards, or who stuck with Android or with the Home button, or who were simply waiting on a bigger screen.

And, I think for them, iPhone XS or iPhone XS Max are exactly the new phones they've been waiting for.

(Unless they want to wait for iPhone XR...?)

165: Apple Watch Series 4 Review Sep 19, 2018

Show notes

Apple Watch is the most important product Apple has ever made and Series 4 is the most important Apple Watch to date.

Is Apple Watch Series 4 perfect? No, of course not. It's still missing core features like always-on time, sleep tracking, and a way for me to make a damn Super-Man Photo face with enough complications to actually be useful. It also starts at $399 — or $499 if you want it with cellular networking — which is still a good chunk of change for what for most people remains a tertiary computing device at best.

But, is Apple Watch Series good enough that you should seriously consider upgrading or getting in on this whole wrist computer thing for the first time? That's the question that matters, and the one I've spent the last week with a 44mm space gray model figuring out.

164: iPhone Screen Repairs Have Just Been Changed Forever Sep 17, 2018

Show notes

Starting today, Apple is swapping out the old, hardware based iPhone screen calibration system for an all-new software system.

"Beginning September 17, 3D Touch Calibration Fixtures will no longer be required to complete display repairs for iPhone 6S and later. We have optimized the calibration process using software. This means we can now calibrate a repaired iPhone by simply connecting the device to [redacted] running our calibration and diagnostics, without the need to run it through a separate fixture. This change will create a more flexible workspace in many repair rooms. Most importantly it will save time for you and our customers."

163: iPhone XR Hands-on Sep 13, 2018

Show notes

Apple has just announced the iPhone XR, which offers much of the same user experience of the iPhone X, but with some notable departures. The phone is larger than the iPhone X, with a 6.1-inch LCD display. It retains the TrueDepth camera that first launched on the 2017 iPhone X, and says goodbye to the Home button.

159: iPhone SECURITY TIPS You Need to Know! Sep 07, 2018

Show notes

Security, like privacy, is always at war with convenience. You want to be able to get to all of your stuff, all the time, as quickly and easily as possible, but you don't want anyone else to get to any of it, at all ever.

If you have a real or philosophical need to lock your tech down stronger, better, smarter, longer…. If you think your phone is the closest thing to a digital brain, extra-cranial storage, and cybernetics that currently exist and should be afforded the same rights against self-incrimination that biological memory enjoys, or if you have medical, legal, clergical, or journalistic information on it that can simply never fall into any unauthorized hands, then I've got some tips for you.
