178: Siri Shortcuts: From the Experts! Oct 12, 2018
    Show notes

Shortcuts is the most important addition to iOS since Extensibility in 8. With it, you can not only set up convenient voice commands to perform any action, you can create actions that are combined into powerful workflows without sacrificing any of that convenience.

Thanks to a bunch of product launches — and some controversies — I haven't had as much time to deep dive into Shortcuts as I'd like so, for this video, I asked some friends to help me out!

    • Chris Connelly, who you should subscribe to right now at https://www.youtube.com/dailytekk

    • Christina Warren, follow her at https://twitter.com/film-girl

    • Mikah Sargent, who you read and listen to via all the links at https://chihuahua.coffee

    • Matthew Cassinelli, forming Workflow team member who just started a new, automation focused channel you should check out at https://www.youtube.com/user/MatthewJCassinelli

    • And Federico Viticci, famously of https://www.macstories.net

They have some great tips on how we can get started with Shortcuts and some favorite and super useful Shortcuts of their own to share.

    177: iPad Pro X (2018) Preview Oct 11, 2018
    Show notes

The minute we saw iPhone X kick bezels and home buttons to the curb, iPad was put on notice. It had a year, maybe more or maybe less, before Apple's new "modern" design language came looking for it.

Now, based on all the rumors to date, modern has come, modern has found it, and a lot more has come with it.

174: Apple vs. Bloomberg: Did China 'Big Hack' all the hardware? Oct 05, 2018
    Show notes

In 10 years of covering Apple, I've never seen anything like this.

Bloomberg Businessweek has dropped a bombshell: Chinese intelligence — agents of the People's Liberation Army — forced factories in China to add tiny spy chips to server boards being manufactured for industry-leading Super Micro, to be sold to industry giants like Apple and Amazon. Their boards and servers literally provide the hearts and minds for many of the world's data centers, large and small. And, the report says, they've been hacked at the hardware level.

I'm an optimist. I like to believe Bloomberg would fact-check the hell out of all of this before printing world one. That they would have it cold. But I also like to believe no public company would risk refuting it this strong if they weren't dead sure it was wrong.

The various accounts can't be reconciled. There are no multiple truths here. Someone got it wrong under circumstances where getting it wrong is catastrophic.

    173: Apple 2018 October Event Preview Oct 04, 2018
    Show notes

Apple doesn't always host October events. But, when Apple wants to show off new designs and highlight new technology — when it wants to go into the holidays with an extra bang — it's with an October event.

So, assuming there is an October Event, and not just a PR drop or bevy of briefings, what could we see?

If past is prolog, new iPads Pro and bunch of new Macs.

    Let's take a look!

172: iPhone XS #BeautyGate is doing something weird... Oct 02, 2018
    Show notes

Spoiler Alert: Apple isn't applying a beauty filter to your iPhone XS selfies. I've covered this in both my initial review and my 3-weeks-later review, but that particularly bad bit of intel just keeps making the rounds, so I wanted to do proper video and a real explainer to lay it to rest once and for all.

BeautyGate or #SmoothSelfieGate began as most quote-unquote gates do: A combination of people with legitimate questions and concerns and those who are super eager to amplify anything they can in order to get attention, even and especially if it does nothing to answer those questions or address those concerns. Add internet and… wildfire.

But, if you dig into why people are concerned and you go beyond those who's sole intent is to sensationalize, you get to something truly fascinating:

The ongoing evolution for camera system to computational photography system.

Here's what's really, actually, truly, technically happening!

    171: iPhone XS + Max Review: 3 Weeks Later Oct 01, 2018
    Show notes

I've been using an iPhone XS going on 3 weeks now. Ever since just after the Apple Event at the Steve Jobs Theater. In that time I used to as my main driver. For communication, photography, videography, travel, reading, listening, watching, writing… pretty much everything I do everyday.

For the first week, that was all on the 5.8-inch iPhone XS proper. For the last two weeks, I've been alternating between the XS and the 6.5-inch XS Max. It's a big phone. But, wow, is it a big phone.

So, now that I've had some more real-life, quality time with both phones, I'm resisting my review and taking a second look.

    Here we go!

170: Apple Watch 4 Review: Two weeks later! Sep 28, 2018
    Show notes

I've now been wearing and using Apple Watch Series 4 for about 2 weeks, since just after the September 12 event at the Steve Jobs theater. I did my initial, deep dive review after a week of fairly frenzied testing. I'm revisiting it now after a second week of somewhat more typical usage — travel, transactions, tracking workouts and tasks, keeping up to speed with my life and staying connected.

    Let's take a second look!

    169: iPhone XS LTE + Wi-Fi... FAIL?! Sep 27, 2018

People are complaining about the new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max cellular and Wi-Fi radios. Some are getting fewer bars in less places. Others aren't getting on their 5GHz networks.
