Andy, joined by The Athletic's Alabama Crimson Tide know-it-all Aaron Suttles, react to Nick Saban and the University of Alabama agreeing to a contract extension that will keep the seven-time national champion in the driver's seat until after the 2028 season. Will business continue as usual for Alabama? How has consistency aided Saban in constructing the Crimson Machine? The guys then deviate to an overarching look at Alabama's roster and staff. What expectations does Bill O'Brien face as the face of 'Bama's offense? Speaking of offense, the starting-11 will look almost entirely different from last year's national championship squad. Who will replace Mac Jones, DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle, Najee Harris, et. al? How heavy a load will Bryce Young have to carry on his shoulders?

Dear Andy & Ari: Coaching wins above replacement & salaries; private school recruiting challenges & how do you fold your t-shirts? Jun 07, 2021

With a flooded inbox like the Dursley's when Hogwarts is attempting to contact Harry Potter, Andy and Ari act as your college-football-podcast lighthouse, guiding you to the answers you seek amid a storm of questions (just hopefully your stay doesn't involve a pig's tail). Increased coaching salaries are awarded for a number of reasons, but in the case of another university or the NFL poaching skippers, do ADs have access to that information or are they taking agents' words at face value? Is it prudent to call a coach's bluff? Which coaches rank best in wins above replacement, and should there be concern over long-term contracts? Besides the obvious, what hurdles, if any, do private schools face in recruiting? What about U of 'X' and directional schools? Lastly, how do you fold your t-shirts, and why should you make your bed every morning?

The Manning QB legacy continues with 2023 prospect Arch Jun 04, 2021
    Show notes

Andy is joined by The Athletic's Sr. Writer Jeff Duncan to discuss his story on 2023 QB prospect Arch Manning. Arch is the nephew of Peyton & Eli Manning and the son of Cooper Manning. Arch says his recruitment is "wide, wide open" meaning college football's power brokers will be doing everything possible to land the talented prospect. With the recruiting dead period over, Arch is headed on the road to take official visits and is starting with Clemson. In-state LSU is doing everything possible to keep Arch in Louisiana. Other schools on Arch's long list include Alabama, Notre Dame, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Ole Miss & Texas.

    Show notes

The recruiting dams have crumbled, flooding today's show, with Andy and Ari, with, well, recruiting chatter. After a 15-month recruiting dead period, college football's talent search is heating up, and with a few new wrinkles this time around. The guys chitchat about the future of recruiting and how geography isn't influencing recruits as much compared to years past. How will the addition of workouts in front of coaches impact the way on-campus visits are handled? Is there more boom-bust potential for recruits at camps? What is the 'Bama Bump' and how does it affect recruiting?

How Boise State’s 2001 upset of Fresno State set the stage for 2 decades of dominance w/ Chris Vannini May 26, 2021
    Show notes

Join The Athletic for just $1 a month! Visit: theathletic.com/andystaples

Andy and The Athletic's Group of Five word-furnisher Chris Vannini reminisce about Boise States' 2001 upset of Fresno State, and how the Broncos' shocker catapulted them to nearly 20 years of dominance. The duo discuss Fresno's success in 2001, and how the WAC's top dog performed leading up to its confrontation with Boise State. Dan Hawkins producing results in his first season was impressive. Was Boise's victory an eye-opener for athletic donors? How did Hawkins stimulate facility upgrades and donations? Chris Petersen's greatest accomplishment was, arguably, his ability to maintain and improve upon BSU's culture. What was the most vital part to BSU's run? Why isn't Boise State the same powerhouse in the G5 that it was a decade-plus ago? The program's approach to recruiting and ability to identify talent is almost like a cheat sheet for Power 5 schools. Plus, Boise's branding success, and how can they sustain this level of success?
