Cleveland City Council Invokes "Art Modell" Law To Keep Browns Stadium Downtown! Apr 02, 2024
    Show notes

City Council, leaping into the tug-of-war surrounding negotations over the possible renovations of Browns Stadium and potential move to Brook Park, proposed legislation on Monday to ensure the team follows a law dating back to 1996 — the Art Modell Law — if it intends to move from Cleveland. Ward 16 Councilman Brian Kazy explained his reasoning to the press this afternoon. The state law Kazy read aloud in Council Chamber was clearly pinpointed to Cleveland's dire bid, as it dealt with two decades ago, to convince the billionaire owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam to keep their football team playing home games on the city's lakefront. Ever since February, when reports had Haslams eyeing the site of the defunct 176-acre former Ford facility near Cleveland Hopkins and which they confirmed at the NFL owners meeting recently, a volleyball match of what ifs have plagued both Cleveland's diehard Browns fans and a City Hall pressed with the task to keep the team, and its home games, here on Lake Erie. Last week, Jimmy Haslam confirmed that he was interested in earmarking that Brook Park site for a potential stadium build—one with a dome, a new RTA stop, a potential mixed-use village and an ocean of privately-owned parking. City Hall, save for a few public comments, has remained politically quiet on the matter, until Kazy's announcement on Monday. (Mayor Bibb didn't give the matter a single mention in his State of the City address last Thursday but afterward said they he hoped to keep the team in Cleveland.) The Haslams have yet to respond on how they, if the legislation is passed by City Council, will respond. Kazy, speaking on behalf of the six other councilmembers in the room, compared the political involvement in sports matters to then-Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine's legislation, in 2018, to keep the Columbus Crew playing at Historic Crew Stadium. "These are the Cleveland Browns," Kazy said. "We want to assure that the Cleveland Browns remain the Cleveland Browns. And that this is a legal team—it's not another city's team." "Don't get me wrong: I'm not calling for the Haslams to sell the team," he added. "We're just calling for the process of state law to be followed." The ordinance will be, Kazy said, introduced formally in Council Chamber Monday evening, then head to its Finance, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee "within the next two or three weeks."

Donovan Mitchell responds to Dan Gilbert's comments about his potential extension with the Cavs Apr 01, 2024

The Denver Nuggets crushed the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday and after the game Donovan Mitchell called out everyone, including himself, to be better down the stretch. The Cleveland Guardians are 3-1 on the season after an impressive opening weekend series against the Oakland A's. Stephen Vogt definitely mans the ship differently than Terry Francona did, so what was your favorite part of the way he handled the team? Deshaun Watson says he wants a dome for the new Cleveland Browns Stadium, but should any player have a say in what the team does with its future home? Or is that decision strictly left for the ownership group to decide upon? Speaking of DW4, are you a "bad Browns fan" if you don't support Watson? Should you root for the team on the front of the jersey over any individual player? Plus, the Final 4 is set on the men's side and the women's Final 4 will be finalized on Monday night. Deshaun Watson says he'd go with a Dome, new facilities bright lights & it would excite the team Mar 31, 2024
    Show notes

Mark Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson down for team "build a dome." The 28-year-old QB shared his thoughts on the franchise's stadium situation via the QB Unplugged Podcast he hosts with personal coach Quincy Avery. "If anybody can sit here and say that it's not an advantage, especially for quarterbacks to play inside in a warm, then you're crazy you know I'm saying," said Watson "Dry ball and being able to throw the ball without no wind, or no lightning, or rain, nothing is definitely key. So I would say if I had to pick, of course I'm gonna go with the dome, and a new facility, and and the lights, and all that stuff that's gonna bring more money to the city." While Deshaun Watson may have his preference in regards to what type of facility the Browns play in in the future, there's no guarantee he'll even be here to see the new facility. 2024 is an important year for the former first-round pick as he looks to rebound from two inconsistent seasons that were derailed by a suspension in 2022 and then multiple shoulder injuries in 2023. Currently, Watson is under contract through the end of the 2026 season. The Browns lease on their current home at Cleveland Browns Stadium expires two years after that in 2028, which is essentially a soft deadline for the team to have their plans finalized. That said, the Haslam's mentioned this week that they could extend the lease by a few years if they need to. Though Nip was known for records such as “Dedication” and “Grinding All My Life,” his impact on the community attracted just as many supporters. Before the Grammy Award winner’s life was cut short, Nipsey spent years spreading his resources to those in need. During a November 2018 interview with “Good Day L.A.,” the rapper gave cameras a tour of 59th Street Elementary School, which he’d revamped in collaboration with Puma. He’d also donated $10,000 to the school. Good deeds such as these were not the first nor last time that Nip showed up for his Crenshaw neighborhood, which was the inspiration behind his Marathon clothing line and much of his music career. Is Spida staying Cavs owner Dan Gilbert is confident Donovan Mitchell will sign an extension Mar 28, 2024
    Show notes

Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert believes All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell will sign a long-term contract to chase an NBA championship with Cleveland. “We’ve been talking to him, sure, for the last couple of years about extending this contract,” Gilbert said Thursday in an interview with The Associated Press. “We think he will extend. I think if you listen to him talk, he loves the city. “He loves the situation in Cleveland because our players are very young and we’re just kind of putting the core together that he’s clearly the biggest part of.” Mitchell signed a five-year, $163 million contract in 2020 with Utah and is under contract through the 2026 season. Based on the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement, Mitchell is eligible to sign a four-year extension worth up to roughly $200 million this summer. Cleveland acquired him in a blockbuster trade shortly before the 2022-23 season. The team viewed him as perhaps the final piece to contend for an NBA championship by leading young stars Darius Garland, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. Cecil Shorts III returned for part two of his conversation with Earl Da Pearl on the Ultimate 216 Show. Cecil discusses what it was like to be drafted during the year of the NFL lockout, his playing days in Jacksonville, and how his experience playing for the Houston Texans was a one-of-a-kind experience. Cecil also details the gruesome injury that took place that ultimately ended his career and could've altered his way of life forever. NATIONAL DISCLAIMER: 21+ and present in select states. The crew gives it's big picture outlook on what to expect in Stephen Vogt's first year as manager. The Cleveland Cavaliers suffered an ugly loss last night to the Hornets. The Cavs couldn't stop a nose bleed and offensively, couldn't score down the stretch. Is it time to officially bring the panic button out? The Cleveland Browns have made some really smart moves this offseason, but a writer from The33rd Team is not impressed with the signings/trades Andrew Berry has made so far.
