Lindsay Clancy's Verdict Only Decides the Address Aug 28, 2026
    Show notes

Door one: a prison cell, life without parole, the oldest women's facility in America receiving its most notorious inmate. Door two: a state hospital, commitments renewed twice a year, a release standard she may never satisfy. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins Tony Brueski for the complete three-part interview on why the Lindsay Clancy verdict decides which door β€” not whether one closes.

Shavaun brings a career of forensic and clinical work to every branch of this story. She explains what incarceration demands of a woman who needs two people to leave her bed, and what a no-parole sentence does to a thirty-six-year-old with no family left outside. She dismantles the assumption that an insanity finding equals mercy, tracing the legal machinery that has kept Andrea Yates hospitalized for two decades after her acquittal. She maps that machinery onto the road ahead for Clancy β€” including the unresolved expert war over what's actually wrong with her.

And she gives the third figure in this tragedy his due: Patrick Clancy, the father carrying a loss with no name and absorbing accusations his attorneys condemn as patently false. His survival lessons come from Rusty Yates, because no one else alive can offer them.

The complete conversation, all three parts, one sitting. When the verdict lands, you'll understand what it actually decided β€” and what it never could.

The Messages Shanna Gardner Sent Before Bridegan Was Killed Aug 27, 2026
    Show notes

Fernandez's conviction validated the prosecution's theory that a web of circumstantial evidence can prove a murder-for-hire without direct proof of the ask. Gardner's trial tests whether that same theory holds when the defendant is one more step removed from the gunman β€” but left a trail of her own words behind.

Gardner's texts to Kim Jensen expressed violent desire regarding Bridegan in language prosecutors will read to the jury. Jensen texted a contact in July 2016 about finding Gardner someone who "performs permanent disappearing acts." Johns testified at a pretrial hearing that multiple people came forward saying Gardner had solicited them. A tattoo shop employee told investigators Gardner said she needed someone to "shut Jared up."

The marital privilege that blocked Jensen from testifying in Fernandez's trial flips in Gardner's case. Gardner's statements to Jensen aren't spousal communications β€” they're friend-to-friend conversations. The prosecution's most important witness may be fully admissible this time. Gardner's attorney Jose Baez has argued the texts are mischaracterized humor and accused the prosecution of withholding evidence. The jury pool has been expanded to 500 prospective jurors.

Patrick Clancy's New Life Comes at a Price Aug 27, 2026
    Show notes

Every step Patrick Clancy has taken since January 2023 has been billed by the public. The divorce cost him sympathy. The move cost him loyalty points. The remarriage cost him the benefit of the doubt. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins Tony Brueski to tally what rebuilding a life after unthinkable loss has actually cost this man β€” and what it would cost anyone.

Shavaun walks through the clinical reality behind the choices being judged. Trauma survivors are told to re-establish structure, connection, and purpose β€” precisely the things Patrick pursued with a new city, a new spouse, and the discipline of distance running. She explains why those textbook recovery moves read as guilt to an audience primed for suspicion, and how conspiracy theories fill the space between a tragedy and an explanation people can accept.

The conversation doesn't look away from the darkest part: accusations that he was involved in his children's deaths, condemned by his attorneys as patently false and defamatory. Neither side of the trial has supported those claims β€” and death threats still reached the woman he married. Shavaun describes what it takes psychologically to absorb that while testifying about the worst night of your life.

Tony ends with the Rusty Yates parallel and a question with no easy answer: when the world won't let you heal in peace, what does healing even look like? The answer is worth the whole episode.

Lindsay Clancy's Expert Called the Prosecution's Own Words This Aug 27, 2026
    Show notes

Clancy was broadcasting her deterioration for months before the killings β€” to her doctors, to people in her community, to a suicide hotline. That's what the prosecution's own final witness acknowledged under cross-examination on August 26.

Saathoff confirmed that Clancy had been openly reporting intrusive thoughts, dark thoughts, suicidal thoughts, and homicidal ideation to people around her. She called a crisis line and reported suicidal ideation. The hotline determined she had no specific plan and was not hospitalized. The system heard her. What happened on January 24, 2023 happened anyway.

Earlier, Saathoff gave the prosecution the clinical testimony it needed β€” Clancy acted deliberately, moved through the sequence without direction, and was in control. Then Reddington read the prosecution's opening statement aloud and asked if Saathoff agreed with it. The FBI psychiatrist told the jury the prosecution's own characterization of Clancy as selfish and manipulative "really minimizes what she was going through." Testimony is over. Closing arguments Thursday. The verdict slip now carries four options β€” including manslaughter, which the prosecution opposed.

Lindsay Clancy Trial: Prosecutor Says She Had Every Resource β€” And Still Killed Aug 27, 2026
    Show notes

Lindsay Clancy, the 34-year-old Duxbury, Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three children β€” 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan β€” with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023, is now hearing the state's closing argument. She faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation, has pleaded not guilty, and her attorney Kevin Reddington has built her defense around an insanity claim rooted in postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.

Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Sprague spent her closing dismantling that narrative point by point. She told jurors Clancy had more support than most new mothers ever get β€” 18 weeks of maternity leave, family on both sides, and access to care most people can't afford. Sprague didn't deny Clancy was depressed. She just argued depression isn't the story here, and that the providers who treated her did the best they could with what they were told. Which, Sprague pointed out, wasn't much β€” Clancy never once told a provider she was having thoughts of harming her kids, because she was afraid the police would take them away. Sprague framed that fear as the opposite of psychosis: a rational, calculated act of self-preservation. On the medication question, she was blunt β€” two prescriptions, no overmedication, and no doctor ever documented signs of psychosis. Her conclusion: Clancy chose to kill her children before she tried to kill herself. Premeditated. Rational. Not a break from reality β€” a decision.

After the killings, Clancy allegedly attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out running errands at the time and has since relocated to Manhattan. The trial continues in Plymouth Superior Court.

Lindsay Clancy Closing Arguments: Reddington Says Prosecutors Faked the Villain Aug 27, 2026
    Show notes

Kevin Reddington spent an hour on his feet trying to undo weeks of testimony, and he didn't do it quietly. In his closing argument in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy β€” the Duxbury, Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three children, 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan, with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023 β€” Reddington told jurors the prosecution built a version of his client that doesn't exist: cold, controlling, calculating, a woman who supposedly hated the kids she's accused of killing.

He didn't stop there. Reddington argued prosecutors even tried to wave off Clancy's own suicide attempt β€” she allegedly jumped from a second-story window afterward and is now paralyzed from the waist down β€” as somehow not real, not serious. That's a bold argument to make about someone who broke her spine trying to die.

The core of his closing came down to burden of proof. Reddington told the jury the state never showed, beyond a reasonable doubt, that Clancy wasn't in the grip of psychosis when her children died. And he went after the state's own experts by name of function, not credentials β€” claiming one built a career chasing terrorists, another specialized in juvenile offenders, and a third allegedly mixed up schizophrenia with psychosis. If true, that's not a small gap in expertise.

Clancy faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation. She's pleaded not guilty, resting her defense on severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication. The case is being heard in Plymouth Superior Court, where jurors now carry the weight of deciding whether a mother accused of the unthinkable understood what she was doing β€” or understood nothing at all.

Lindsay Clancy Has to Prove the Impossible to Get Out Aug 27, 2026
    Show notes

The release standard sounds simple: show the court you're no longer mentally ill or dangerous. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins Tony Brueski to explain why, for Lindsay Clancy, that sentence might as well be written in stone.

Consider the bind. Her defense told the jury she has bipolar disorder β€” a lifelong condition β€” complicated by a postpartum psychotic break. If that account wins her the verdict, it becomes the official story of her mind, and it's a story with no ending. You manage bipolar disorder. You don't cure it. Every future release hearing starts from a diagnosis that, by definition, is still there. Shavaun lays out how psychiatric patients navigate that paradox, how rarely the system lets go of cases this notorious, and what the years of trying do to a person.

The episode also covers the collision waiting inside the facility: a prosecution expert testified he found no bipolar disorder and no psychosis at all. Two official versions of Lindsay Clancy now exist under oath, and Shavaun explains which institutions get to pick between them β€” and what happens to her treatment if they pick wrong.

Tony brings the audience's sharpest question to close: if the door only opens when the illness is gone, and the illness never goes, what is this verdict actually offering her? Shavaun's answer reframes the entire trial.

Lindsay Clancy Would Trade Nurses for Guards Aug 27, 2026
    Show notes

Three and a half years of hospital care ends the moment a guilty verdict is read. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott and Tony Brueski examine the version of Lindsay Clancy's future that starts with a conviction β€” life without parole, served in a body that cannot move itself and a mind the entire trial was fought over.

The numbers frame the problem. By one estimate, roughly eighty-five percent of the women in the state prison that would receive her already carry a mental health diagnosis β€” and the facility has been operating since 1877, the oldest women's prison in the country. Federal investigators documented how the Massachusetts system responds when inmates reach psychiatric crisis, and the findings involved isolation, not treatment.

Shavaun brings the clinical lens the coverage is missing. She explains what institutional dependence does to someone who was a nurse before she was a defendant, and why a diagnosis like the one her defense describes gets worse under stress and broken sleep. She also takes on what decades of confinement do to a person who entered at thirty-six with nothing left outside the walls.

Tony asks the questions the audience is actually asking β€” including whether a sentence like this punishes her, warehouses her, or both. The answer Shavaun gives isn't the one either side of the courtroom would want to hear.

Why Fernandez's Lawyer Almost Fell Out of His Chair Aug 27, 2026
    Show notes

The most revealing moment of closing arguments in Mario Fernandez's murder trial wasn't a piece of evidence. It was defense attorney Jesse Dreicer telling the jury he almost fell out of his chair. Prosecutor Stifler, he said, had claimed Fernandez moved $50,000 from Shanna Gardner's account to his own after the killing. Dreicer walked the jury back through Detective Johns' financial testimony and said the records showed only two small transfers.

Dreicer spent over two hours dismantling the prosecution's circumstantial web. He played a recorded phone call where Fernandez praised Tenon for handyman work eleven months after the murder β€” captured without Fernandez's knowledge β€” and called it the strongest proof the checks were for legitimate labor. He pointed out that investigators found six 10mm Glocks at a single pawn shop and never checked whether any connected to the case. He reminded the jury that Tenon is alive, could have testified, and the prosecution chose not to call him.

The prosecution's rebuttal came down to one frame. Fernandez is connected to every thread of evidence. His phone went dark during the hour of the murder. He wiped it after Tenon's arrest. He never called Shanna when police announced they'd caught the killer. Either all of that is coincidence, the prosecutor argued, or it's guilt. The jury begins deliberations Wednesday.

Lindsay Clancy's Lawyer Read Her Search History Out Loud Aug 27, 2026
    Show notes

Lindsay Clancy: Conspiracy and Confusion is the full three-segment run, fifteen comments from this channel checked against the trial record, with the carotid artery search her own lawyer showed the jury as the opening.

What's at stake in the verdict comes first. First-degree murder in Massachusetts means mandatory life without parole. Not criminally responsible means commitment to a state hospital with periodic reviews, and Lindsay has already been at Tewksbury since May 2023. The burden is on the prosecution to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that she could appreciate the wrongfulness of what she did or control it. Judge Sullivan read that two-part test to the jury.

Then the comments. Whether she did it: a rope with no exhibit behind it, and window blood the State Police analyst classified as contact stains. A handedness theory with zero testimony, a mistress absent from every filing, and a Europe trip that came after her 911-call admission. Patrick, meanwhile, is on a pharmacy camera while his wife is dialing him from home.

Whether she was in her right mind: a Yates search missing from the extraction next to a Yates conversation a coworker swore to. A psychosis-doesn't-switch-off argument answered by a Commonwealth witness. A lawyer question asked through a breathing tube. And the diagnoses that exist, bipolar from both sides, major depression from the prosecution, psychosis from the defense.

Patrick: the May 2023 relocation, the five-word answer on bipolar, a profiler with no Bureau history, thirteen medications listed in his own complaint, and his December 2022 phone calls with dates attached.

She admits she killed her children. Her lawyer isn't blaming Patrick. Everything else, comment by comment, gets the record.
