The Novack Murders Jul 21, 2022

Show notes

In the 1960's, Ben and Bernice Novack were Miami Beach royalty. They were the owners of the Fountainbleu hotel, the hottest spot on Miami beach, known for it's old Hollywood glamour style. Everyone from JFK to the Rat Pack stayed there, and it was the place to be. The Novacks lived in the Penthouse Suite with their son, Ben Jr., until like all good things, the era came to an end in the 70's when the hotel went bankrupt. By 2009, Bernice was widowed and living a quiet life, while her son, Ben, found success in the hospitality industry. Then, in April of 2009, Bernice was found dead in her home at 86 years old. It appeared she had slipped getting out of her car and then stumbled into her house, where she died. Police and the medical examiner ruled her death accidental. It's unlikely that anyone would have ever looked twice at Bernice's death if not for what happened just three months later, when her now 53 year old son, Ben, was found dead in his hotel room.

The Kidnapping of Denise Huskins Jul 14, 2022

Show notes

We're so excited to be back! This week, we're talking about the kidnapping of Denise Huskins. In the middle of the night on March 22, 2015, a group of broke into the home of Aaron Quinn and kidnapped his girlfriend, Denise Huskins. Aaron's story involved kidnappers wearing wet suits who played pre-recorded messages and wanted very little ransom for Denise's return. His story seemed so unbelievable to police, who were convinced early on that Aaron had done something to Denise. When that seemed unlikely, they formed a new theory: that Denise had never been kidnapped, and she was actually the real life Gone Girl.

Show notes

Tom and Jackie Hawks were living their best lives. They'd scrimped and saved for years to allow themselves to retire early. But then they got the best news - their son's wife was pregnant with their first grandchild. They knew they would need to change their lifestyle if they wanted to be close enough to the baby for frequent visits, so they put the Well Deserved up for sale. The Murder of Larry McNabney Part 1 May 12, 2022

Show notes

It was late 2001, and ads for Larry McNabney’s personal injury law firm in Sacramento were running constantly, and he always ended the ads with the same sign off - I’m Larry McNabney. Call Me. Only, people had been trying to call him, and no one had been able to speak to him for months. They might be able to get a hold of his wife and office manager, Elisa McNabney, or the office assistants, Ginger Miller and Sarah Dutra, but they would just always say that Larry was in rehab for his alcoholism or on vacation at a spa.
But after several months went by and Larry still hadn’t returned to his law office, his friends and family started to worry. They realized that the last time anyone had actually seen him was while he was in Southern California for a horse show. But no one that was there could remember the details of their last encounter with Larry because that horse show had been on September 11, 2001, the day the World Trade Center was attacked in New York.

Everyone was so focused on the news, and it was such a chaotic and confusing time, that no one could remember the details of that day, which made investigating his disappearance really tough. Because the truth is, Larry McNabney wasn’t in rehab, and he wasn’t on vacation or at a spa. Larry was dead. This is the murder of Larry McNabney.

The Murder of Deana Wild May 05, 2022

Show notes

When Deana Wild fell to her death off a cliff in Big Sur, California, authorities assumed this was a tragic accident. She was driving through Big Sur with a couple she lived with, Billie Joe and Virginia McGinnis, who said that she stumbled due to the high heels she was wearing on the cliff's edge. It's not uncommon for people to fall, they see it about once a month. The investigation was wrapped up quickly and Deana's mother Bobbie struggled to move on. When the burial insurance company wouldn't pay out to help with Deana's funeral costs, she asked for the help of a lawyer she knew, Steve Keeney. Keeney asked around, and as he dug into Deana's death and the McGinnis's background, he uncovered a web of lies, betrayal, and murder that spanned decades.

The Murder of Sherri Rasmussen Apr 21, 2022

Show notes

John Ruetten was absolutely in love with his new bride, Sherri Rasmussen. She was the total package: beautiful, fun to be with, and very smart. At 29, she was already the director of nursing at the hospital she worked at in Van Nuys, California, and she even lectured internationally on critical care nursing. But it all came to a sudden end when John arrived at their townhome just a few months after they'd gotten married to find her dead on the living room floor. He had no idea who could have done this, and told detectives neither of them had any enemies, anyone that would have wanted to hurt them. But Sherri's father, Nels, disagreed. Detectives were certain that this had been a burglary gone wrong, and as they explained that to Nels, he asked them: "Have you checked out John's ex-girlfriend? The lady cop?"
John's ex was a police officer named Stephanie Lazarus, and according to Nels, she'd had plenty of run-ins with Sherri that made Nels uneasy. But no one was listening to him.
