Deep Dive: Why the Religious Complain More About Your Brand Feb 28, 2024
    Show notes

Riza Casidy, Associate Professor of Marketing at Macquarie University, is the co-author of a research paper called "Religious Belief, Religious Priming, and Negative Word of Mouth." He joined Tod to walk through his findings.

It's going to happen. Someone from your company's going to do something dumb, and that will result in a negative review on Facebook or Google or something.

When you break down the kinds of people who spread negative word of mouth, you find different groups — not just genders or ages, but also their personal moral stance, how religious they are, and so on.

You might think that religious people would be more forgiving of mistakes made by your brand — and you would be wrong. In fact, they're much less forgiving.

At least according to some new research.

Deep Dive: Finding and Ranking Potential Brand Alliances Feb 27, 2024
    Show notes

Sometimes, one of the tasks of a marketing person at a company, is to propose partnerships between their brand and another. This offers the opportunity of joint advertising campaigns (like Coca-Cola and McDonald’s), cause-based alliances (like Target and UNICEF), or even bundling products together — like the streaming deals that include joint Hulu and Spotify subscriptions.

But finding those partners isn't always easy. And determining whether your customers would be thrilled with an alliance or offended by it should be top of mind.

What if there were a measure of brand partnership potential? A score that would tell you which other organizations would make for great alliances.

That's what Pankhuri Malhotra set out to invent. She and her coauthor have published a paper in The Journal of Marketing called Leveraging Cofollowership Patterns on Social Media to Identify Brand Alliance Opportunities.

Deep Dive: Exploiting the "Vicarious Hand Effect" in Marketing Feb 26, 2024
    Show notes

How does a photo holding a product move the needle in terms of that product's consumer perception? More than you'd think. Tod speaks to a researcher who studied this effect.

There are many advantages of e-commerce for the consumer — they can shop from home, it’s easier to compare products from different stores. But there’s always been one big disadvantage: They can’t touch anything. Sometimes, holding a product in your hand, is as much a part of the buying process as holding your credit card there.

But if we can’t give them a good feeling by letting them touch the product, can we get at least half-way there?

That’s what Andrea Luangrath set out to discover. She is an Associate Professor of Marketing at the Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa. She her colleagues have published a fascinating research study in the Journal of Marketing Research called “The Vicarious Haptic Effect in Digital Marketing and Virtual Reality.”

Deep Dive: Preventing Shopping Cart Abandonment Feb 22, 2024
    Show notes

New scientific research find that asking people to review product reviews or check out other product pages may be causing people to abandon their carts.

In the e-commerce space, there is no end to the number of plugins, platforms, and pop-ups you can install on your store's webfront to try to juice sales. One of the biggest focuses of this category is around increasing the conversion rate between the moment someone adds a product to a cart and that person actually pays for it.

In fact, I'd venture to say an entire industry now exists in the very specific, but very important, space known as Cart Abandonment. Some studies show that 80% of online shopping carts are abandoned. In this space, we see everything from urgently worded text messages to time-limited discount offers by email.

Sometimes, these tools encourage people to come back to the site to read the product reviews, or browse more product pages.

But a new paper published last month in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science says tactics like that might actually be CAUSING people to abandon their carts.

Tod spoke with Angeline Scheinbaum, Associate Professor of Marketing at the Wilbur O. and Anne Powers College of Business at Clemson University in South Carolina.
