110: How to Break Into Venture Capital (VC) w/ Lindy Morris Fishburne, Breakout Ventures [Espresso Shots] Feb 11, 2019
    Show notes

Lindy Morris Fishburne is the Managing Partner of Breakout Ventures, a venture capital fund, or in layman's terms, the pot of “seed” money that investors give startups to get their ideas off the ground. Lindy, who specifically works with STEM startups, focuses getting budding science and tech companies out of the lab and into the market. Lindy is also the Executive Director of Breakout Labs which is re-shaping the way early-stage science is funded so that independent researchers and early-stage companies can advance their most radical ideas. Breakout Labs is not a typical foundation grant—they are a revolutionary, revolving funding model where successful projects fund the next generation of audacious scientific exploration. Lindy has come a long way since her Anthropology Major at Duke University, where she learned that although the social sciences interested her she didn’t have the patience or interest in doing field research herself. In her role as the Managing Partner of Breakout Ventures and Executive Director of Breakout Labs, Lindy works with the leaders of tomorrow to get them where they need to be today.

109: How to Break Into the Education Field w/ Marie Appel, The Commit Partnership [Espresso Shots] Feb 07, 2019
    Show notes

Marie Appel is the Manager of Analytics at The Commit Partnership which has become the largest educational community-based collective impact organization in the U.S. as measured by either staff, by budget, or by total students supported (790,000+ ages 0 thru 22). After growing up in a small town of 300 to becoming the first in her family to go to college (she went to Harvard on a scholarship), Marie Appel is a true believer in the power of good education. She also learned from her own experience that in far too many communities around the U.S. there are few resources and little support for economically disadvantaged students. Today Marie has taken her passion for learning and helping others realize their potential through education to the next level -- teaching herself analytics by watching Youtube videos and taking additional coursework after she graduated from college. In this episode, Marie talks about how young people can break into the field of education, beyond working as teachers or educators and what skills and life experiences are most useful to those with a passion for helping improve the field of education.

108: How to Break Into Tech Communications w/ Jose Castaneda, ITI [Espresso Shots] Feb 06, 2019
    Show notes

Jose Castaneda is the Communications Manager for the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI) the trade association for the high tech sector -- from hardware to software to services -- representing the most innovative technology brands in the world. In this role Jose drafts blog posts for ITI’s policy teams, manages media relations with reporters and leads ITI’s social media efforts. It’s not what he thought he’d be doing when he graduated from the University of Florida, in May 2015, with a double major in Economics and Political Science. However, fortunately for Jose, it’s a job that plays to his strengths: lots of writing, networking and public speaking. Prior to joining ITI, Jose had several internships which helped to position him for the entry-level communications job that got his foot in the door at ITI as a Communications Associate. Jose’s internships included working at the PR giant Edelman, at Hamilton Place Strategies (HPS) as a Public Affairs intern and at AT&T as a Federal and National Public Affairs intern. Tune in to this episode of T4C to learn how Jose leveraged internships until he finally landed a full-time paying gig.
