Ep. 366: CM Punk fired + the Intercontinental Championship Sep 09, 2023

Show notes

Hal, Danielle and Lindsey are ready to discuss another week in wrestling news both within and outside the ring.

CM Punk has been fired from AEW. He was inarguably the promotions biggest star and the favorite of Tony Khan. Now that he’s no longer All Elite, should we expect him to wrestle somewhere else soon? And now AEW can focus on the important task: getting their scripted stories to match the compelling drama of their behind the scenes antics.

Plus: WWE’s latest Saturday show Payback! No Bloodline? No overseas venue? No problem! It wasn’t quite as compelling as other shows we’ve seen from the company this year, but there was still a lot to enjoy.

The Main Event: The legacy of the Intercontinental Championship

The Intercontinental Championship is one of the longest running championships in WWE. It's been held by tons of all-timers as the "workrate" or "stepping stone" title before someone is ready to hold the world championship.

The Three Count:

Danielle put over Christian stealing another belt.

Lindsey put over The Judgment Day on the Bump.

Hal put over Gunther's Chops.

Hosted by Hal Lublin, Danielle Radford, and Lindsey Kelk.

Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun.

The music for our new promo is provided by Incompetech.com

Ep. 365: All In + Terry Funk + Bray Wyatt Sep 02, 2023

Show notes

Hal, Danielle and Lindsey are back– and just in time for the most attended wrestling show in history and all the fallout that came with it.

All In was a big success from AEW according to most metrics. The stadium was full of fans ready to watch a series of well-received matches.

It looks like Mercedes Mone’ is in the wings to make at least an appearance in AEW soon. What should we look forward to if the women’s division continues the pessimistic trajectory that it’s been on for years?

And of course, we have to talk about CM Punk’s annual tradition of fighting his colleagues at PPV events. Is this the end for CM Punk’s return to wrestling? We’ve got a long investigation that will tell us for sure!

The Main Event: Remembering Terry Funk and Bray Wyatt.

Last week was a rough one for wrestling fans. We lost Hardcore icon and WWE Hall of Famer Terry Funk just days before we lost one of the biggest stars of today Bray Wyatt.

The Three Count:

Danielle: put over Moxley being a real one.

Lindsey put over Zoey Stark showing what she can do.

Hal put over MJF on wrestling tribalism.

Hosted by Hal Lublin, Danielle Radford, and Lindsey Kelk.

Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun.

The music for our new promo is provided by Incompetech.com

Ep. 364: Gargano & Ciampa - DIY Aug 26, 2023

Show notes

Danielle Radford and Hal Lublin are back after the Los Angeles Hurriquake to discuss a ton of wrestling!

Have we seen the last of Edge? If so, does that mean the end of his career… or just the end of his time in WWE? No one seems to know– including Edge himself!

Plus, Chad Gable just might be the one to take the Intercontinental Title off of Gunther– just in time for Gunther to move onto some World Championship aspirations.

And speaking of the World Heavyweight title, it’s time for us to discuss how enthused we are about the job Seth is doing as champion and how we think this feud against Shinsuke Nakamura is gonna do.

The Main Event: DIY

For years, Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa were the central wrestlers for NXT, first as a tag team, then as bitter enemies. It was a story that took a lot of twists and turns, including real life problems that disrupted it along the way.

The Three Count:

Danielle: put over Dom and Rhea horseplay. (again)

Hal put over Billy Corgan showing LA Knight love.

Julian put over Johnny Gargano’s fashion choices at TakeOver.

Hosted by Hal Lublin and Danielle Radford

Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun.

The music for our new promo is provided by Incompetech.com

Ep. 363: Rerun - Rob Van Dam Aug 19, 2023

Show notes

Lindsey Kelk and Julian Burrell join forces on a special episode of Tights and Fights!

Shinsuke Nakamura is next in line for a shot at Seth Rollins’ World Heavyweight Championship. But is there something about this feud that just feels like it’s not clicking as a prospect?

Plus: The team shares thoughts on Jimmy’s explanation for attacking his brother Jey Uso, discovers what the “JD” in JD McDonnaugh stands for and hopes that we’ve just seen the beginning of an Indi Hartwell/Candice LeRae tag team forming.

The Main Event: Rerun - Rob Van Dam

Rob Van Dam is a wrestling legend. A WWE Hall-of-Famer, he’s wrestled for tons of promotions – including most recently in AEW– and earned championships every step of the way. Rob tells us about his documentary film Headstrong, his career, CBD, and why wrestling is more of a real competition that fans know.

This interview originally aired in 2019.

The Three Count:

Julian put over Bad Cop Bad Cop’s first album and cab drivers to Wembley Stadium.

Lindsey put over Dom and Rhea horseplay.

Hosted by Hal Lublin, Danielle Radford, Lindsey Kelk and Julian Burrell.

Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun.

Ep. 362: SummerSlam 2023 Aug 12, 2023

Show notes

SummerSlaaaaam and the livin’s EZ on a brand new episode of Tights and Fights!

In one of the WWE’s longest PLE’s (industry term!) of the year, we had championships defended, briefcases abound and hugs exchanged.

How weird is it to say that Ricochet had the best match of his WWE career with Logan Paul? And is Iyo Sky officially a made woman with the WWE Women’s Championship?

And most importantly: Did anyone from Star Wars actually care about those medals or did they just want Chewbacca not to have one?

The Main Event: Roman Reigns, The Usos and injuries

Roman Reigns finally had his main event match against Jey Uso. Thanks to a sudden betrayal by Jimmy, the Tribal chief retained his title, which puts us in an intriguing position for the story to continue; especially since Roman hurt his back early in the match on Saturday.

And he’s not the only one. Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Sonya Deville, Dakota Kai and Big E have all gotten injury news in the past few weeks.

The Three Count:

Julian put over NXT recapturing his heart.

Lindsey put over Dave Bautista’s performance in a film she did not enjoy.

Hal put over holding Glenn Jacobs accountable.

Hosted by Hal Lublin and Lindsey Kelk.

Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun.

The music for our new promo is provided by Incompetech.com

Ep. 361: Vince McMahon indictment when? Aug 05, 2023

Show notes

Hal, Danielle and Lindsey are finally back together on a brand new episode of Tights and Fights!

As if it were meant to be, there was massive news right before the episode began: Federal law enforcement executed a search warrant on Vince McMahon just last month. Between this and his back surgery it hopefully means he’ll stay away from wrestling for a bit.

But we’ve also got a lot of other big shows to talk about: The Great American Bash! All In! And of course the biggest party of the Summer…

The Main Event: SummerSlam

SummeSlam happens Saturday live at Ford Field in Detroit! There’s a lot to look forward to and a lot that we hope surprises us with how good it can be. But who should leave with the World Heavyweight Championship? And what feuds are we hoping will finally end?

The Three Count:

Danielle put over Bret Hart’s love of the not-Goldberg wrestlers

Lindsey put over Behind the Bastards.

Hal put over Paul Heyman’s declaration of being the GOAT

Julian put over Eurovision = Wrestling.

Hosted by Hal Lublin, Danielle Radford and Lindsey Kelk.

Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun.

The music for our new promo is provided by Incompetech.com

Rerun: John “Super Eyepatch Wolf” Walsh and The Undertaker Jul 29, 2023

Show notes

This episode was originally published in 2019

This week, we’re happy to revisit one of our favorite episodes with John Walsh, the man behind the popular YouTube channel Super EyePatch Wolf. In addition to discussing anime and videogames, John has made several videos about wrestling, which makes him the perfect guest for us.

Hear as Danielle, Lindsey and John recount such amazing news from 2019 like:

AEW announcing that Dynamite will air on TNT.

The Undisputed Era teasing their first breakup.

The potential of Kushida and Kassius Ohno in NXT.

And so much more!

The Main Event: The Undertaker and the road to 20-0 at Wrestlemania

For years it was considered the sacred cow of WWE: The Undertaker’s WrestleMania undefeated streak. The drama and mythos behind “The Streak” really ramped up when Shawn Michaels and Triple H tried to end it for four consecutive years. We’ll take a look at what made The Road to 20-0 so effective, including our thoughts on this 20+ year story and how we felt about its conclusion.

If you want to see more about the Undertaker and what The Streak meant to his character, be sure to check out this Super Eyepatch Wolf video.

Hosted by Danielle Radford and Lindsey Kelk.

Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun.

Ep. 360: Life After Vince (sort of) Jul 22, 2023

Show notes

Dream the impossible dream of Vince no longer having any control of wrestling on a brand new episode of Tights and Fights.

One year ago today the old man announced his retirement from WWE. It was a shocking day that had an immediate impact on the quality of WWE’s TV shows, ticket sales, employee morale and fan enthusiasm.

And then Vince came back and helped sell the company.

Even though we’re not filled the joy that we had in the few months following Vince fully leaving, we can’t help but feel that WWE is still a better product for his more limited presence.

How much do we fear him putting together the occasionally crappy show? Who specifically has benefitted from him no longer booking? We discuss it all!

The Three Count:

Danielle put over Bodybuilders arguing about rest days.

Julian put over CMFTR LGBTQ.

Lindsey put over Dark Side of the Ring featuring Magnum TA.

Hosted by Danielle Radford and Lindsey Kelk.

Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun.

The music for our new promo is provided by Incompetech.com

Ep. 359: “Heels” Season 2 w/ Alexander Ludwig Jul 14, 2023

Show notes

This interview was recorded on June 28th, prior to the announcement of the SAG strike.

We’re happy to welcome Alexander Ludwig onto the latest episode of the Tights and Fights podcast! He plays Ace Spade for the Starz show “Heels.” It’s the story of two brothers working to gain national attention in a small Georgia wrestling promotion amid drama inside and outside the ring.

Alexander tells us about learning to play a wrestler, leaning on the advice of his friends like Edge and Dwayne Johnson, understanding how to appreciate wrestling after not seeing the artform and we’ll learn what it’s like to kiss CM Punk.

Plus: Tales from a recent Prestige Wrestling event that Danielle attended!

The Three Count:

Danielle put over the first “He’s gay!” chant in wrestling.

Julian put over the bestest crowds in hot wrestling summer.

Lindsey put over Money in the Bank.

Hosted by Danielle Radford and Lindsey Kelk.

Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun.

Ep. 358: Money in the Bank 2023 w/ Mat Ricardo Jul 08, 2023

Show notes

This week, our old pal Mat Ricardo joins us to discuss all things Money in the Bank on a brand new episode of Tights and Fights!

Mat not only saw Saturday’s show like we all did… He was in the O2 Arena! And he even got to go backstage!

He’ll tell us all about who was the most over, who got booed out of the building, whether anyone expected John Cena to make his appearance and so much more.

The Main Event: The Bloodline Civil War

Roman Reigns faced his cousins in a tag team match with Solo as his partner in the final match on Saturday. And, in a move three years in the making, Jey Uso pinned the tribal chief and proved who the ones truly are.

The Three Count:

Mat put over Wrestle Me’s video about Les Kellet

Julian put over Shayna Baszlers newest promo.

Danielle put over Roman admitting love.

Hosted by Danielle Radford and Mat Ricardo.

Produced by Julian Burrell for Maximum Fun.
