Episode #22. Sugar Countess. Maria Bernard from the Heart Foundation on counting sugar intake. Oct 31, 2019
    Show notes

At the Fizz symposium I was lucky to meet Maria Bernard from the Heart Foundation. She is a nutrition expert. She is going out into the Pacific Islander community to give lectures and educate people about how much sugar is in sugary beverages. Learn a simple strategy. Look up the serving size, multiple by the amount of sugar in the drink and divide by 5 and you have the number of teaspoons. The average softdrink has 25 teaspoons.
The World Health Organization recommends 3 teaspoons of sugar for children, 6 teaspoons for women and 9 teaspoons for men per day.

The symposium addressed all things that sugar is doing to our overall health. They are using a multipronged approach to address how to reduce sugar consumption in New Zealand. There are three things that look the most promising are introducing a tax on sugary beverages, having water only schools and raising awareness about how much sugar is in food and drinks at the grass roots level. It was a fantastic day at the University of Auckland. Thank you!

Episode #19. TAKES GUTS TO LIVE LIFE. Dr Fiona Simpson from small town Scotland to curing cancer. Her tribe of mentors that saved her life so she can save ours. Oct 06, 2019
    Show notes

Dr Fiona Simpson is a Senior Research Fellow at The University of Queensland Diamantina Institute, Brisbane, Australia. She grew up in the Highlands of Scotland, where she was the top of her class, at the same time, she was working 3 jobs to keep the family home afloat. Her father died at the age of 10 and left her mother clinically depressed. At the time, there was no help for a woman left to raise the kids. Fiona found herself in difficult times and angry and let this out in self-destructive ways, from addiction to violence. One night she was walking to the cliffs and not wanting to live anymore. One man, Ian McGregor, took her under his arms and showed her love and saved her life. We discuss her life experience, the beauty and love of people that care enough. This lead to a PhD in Cambridge and a prestigious fellowship to Scripps in California, United States. She has made significant scientific discoveries and now is changing the face of how we use current immunotherapies for head&neck cancer, breast and melanoma cancers. It takes a lot of guts to have the courage to face your biggest fears of being alone and exhausted and desperate. When we break through our fears, on the other side, lives glory. Dr Fiona Simpson is raising money to bring high school students to have work experience at the Translational Research Institute.

Episode #17. EVERYONE wants to be SEEN. My Hope to Recharge podcast interview about trauma and brain development with Matana Poupko Jacobs. Sep 29, 2019
    Show notes

From the Hope to Recharge Podcast with Matana Poupko Jacobs.
Brain health from a Neuroscientist’s mind and heart.
Prof. Selena Bartlett. She was raised, studied and worked for many years in Australia and then made a career change which led her to the western shores of the United States. Originally a pharmacist Selena spent many years developing drugs to treat illnesses.

In 1989 her younger sister, Francesca, had a traumatic mental episode and was hospitalized. Selena went to visit her sister daily during her stay in the hospital. Due to the severe and harsh treatment Francesca underwent, Selena was moved to delve into mental health.

Little was known about the machinations of the brain when she began her research. In 1995 she received her Ph.D. in neuropharmacology. In 2004 she moved to the University of California at San Francisco where she directed research in alcohol and addiction for eight years. This led Prof. Bartlett to create treatments for neurological problems such as addiction, pain, stress, anxiety and depression. She most recently has been busy presenting her findings on brain fitness and neuroplasticity, the ability to restructure and realign the brain.

I met Prof. Bartlett a year ago. What had brought us together was a mutual passion to remove the stigma revolving mental illness. Selena explained that we have inherited genes from our parents and grandparents and great grandparents that have within them a history that we cannot rewrite.
What we can do is draw a line in the sand and say - from now on I want to make changes. Changes can be made. The method is simple but not easy.
If it was easy, Selena explains, none of us would be dealing with anxiety, depression, or addictions.

If a person has an anxious day we are likely to come home pour ourselves a drink as we make supper, and then perhaps another one or two. We can retrain ourselves to react differently to the stimuli of an anxious day. Replace the drink with a walk around the block or sitting, relaxing under the shade of a tree. It can be done. It works. We just need to make the switch.

The blockage to this is our instinct to stay with the known, with our habits.
Even if we are convinced that the change is to our benefit, habit rules with a heavy hand.

Another area where we can create positive change is in giving our children attention and love. Selena points to the time period between 0 and 3 and 10 to 14 years of age as being hyper-important to receive loving attention.
A person who has it will grow up with a healthier mental state and be more capable of dealing with the hand that life deals them. Even if it isn’t a winning hand. In contrast someone who didn’t receive the all important love and attention in their crucial formative years is much more likely as they age to fall prey to mental illness. Genes are 60% of the story, but don’t discount the 40% of parental input. It can tip the balance between dealing with issues and dealing with addictions.

Episode #16. Determined Demi. First in any generation to University beating imposter syndrome."We see the world not as it is but as we are" Sep 28, 2019
    Show notes

This podcast brought me to tears. "We see the world not as it is but as we are" from Demi Smith. She has managed to win a full scholarship to the University of California Davis. Her mother Emily is one of the strongest women I have ever met. She sacrificed her dreams and worked more than three jobs at any one time to get her children a better life. Demi is her youngest daughter and in this episode you will learn what she did and how hard she is working to make their American dream of a better life possible. Emily was born as one of 16 children in Belize. Most of the time she did not know when the food was coming from and walked to school without shoes. Somehow she managed to get herself to California and worked at the Montessori School for 20 years to secure a better educational future for her children. I met Emily when Demi was a baby. This is an emotional and beautiful story as we watch Demi go to College. Everyone can benefit from this podcast, she gives tips and tricks to help others succeed. So proud of the amazing young woman that is flourishing before my eyes. Especially proud of Emily Berriault for having the courage and determination to make a better life for her children.
